Obama taps Duke prof on energy

A Duke University professor has been tapped by the White House to lead the Energy Information Administration, the agency that tracks energy statistics in Washington.

President Barack Obama today nominated Richard G. Newell, an expert in environmental economics, for the job as administrator of the agency, Barb Barrett reports.

On the surface it might seem as though Newell would be taking on a pretty wonky position. The agency keeps track of data and makes forecasts on oil, coal, natural gas, nuclear energy and renewable energies.

But the Energy Information Administration's work carries significant weight in energy policy discussions. Its research likely will have some impact, for example, in whether North Carolina's coastal waters could sprout either oil wells or wind turbines.

During last year’s debate on offshore drilling and high gas prices, experts routinely cited an EIA report that said new drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf would have little impact on oil prices before 2030.

Newell is the Gendell Associate Professor of Energy and Environmental Economics at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment. His research has focused on energy and the environment, including the economics of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Newell’s nomination would have to be approved by a Senate vote.

Does this mean that you'll now be reporting on EIA reports when they can inform debate on issues relevant to North Carolina?

Back when we were having a (frankly ridiculous) debate on offshore drilling in North Carolina, I was continually badgering you in comments to include information from the EIA. Their reports showed that offshore drilling wouldn't have an effect on gas prices. However, you continually made posts about offshore drilling without providing this context. As a result, you had numerous uninformed readers who continued to support offshore drilling based off the misinformed notion that offshore drilling would lead to lower gas prices.

I guess PaulTerrell can't read. the title if this article is about an appointment, not an invitation for rightwing idiots to rant and reveal their inane stupidity. And you morons wonder why you got drop-kicked out of power. Like you used to tell us, if you don't love it, leave it. No one is asking you to stay. Bye bye.

The ties of the Obama administration and General Electric says all I need to hear about Obama's policies. The fact that Immelt is fashioning his corporations image to accept billions in "GREEN" money from the government is suspect. NBC and MSNBC are part of the GE corporation that has given such blatant favorable coverage to Obama. This is to gain the GREEN money and is blatant pay to play. And with Immelt being appointed to one of Obama councils is more proof to the folly of the picking winners policy of Obama. The connections of the Democrats and Obama with ACORN, FANNY MAE ,and FREDDIE MAC is further prooft to the corruption of modern day politics.

It is obvious to anyone not drinking the far left kool-aid that all of this is quid pro quo and has nothing to do with energy policy or saving the environment. It is strictly about power and greed. It is the same CAP and TRADE, healthcare, and other government policies of the Obama administration.
