Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

President Barack Obama will travel to Raleigh on Wednesday for an event to push his health care reform effort.

He'll follow that appearance with a stop in southwest Virginia, according to White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

Gibbs announced the events at an off-camera briefing with reporters this morning but offered no other details.

UPDATE: During the briefing, Gibbs was asked about future events or television broadcasts that Obama might use for advocating health care reform.

"I don’t know if there’s any TV plans," Gibbs said. "We travel again on Wednesday. We’ll go through this in the (discussion of the) week ahead this afternoon but we have stops in Raleigh, North Carolina, and southwestern Virginia . . . It’s health care."

UPDATE: The White House identified the second stop as Bristol, Va.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Your comment demonstates your not too smart! If you elemenated just one of the departments that is not in the consitution--let's say the departmennt of transportation-- you could not even drive to work. Then let's elemenate the department of energy-- how much would you think gas and electricity would cost with out regulation?

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Wow! You have an example of something done well by government, perchance?

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Great, a perfect marriage. The leftists can turn out and protest the one worthwhile thing Barry is halfheartedly doing...killing Jihadists. The sensible folks can protest a system that will be a massive, inefficient cost drain (like Medicare and Medicaid) that allows the government to regulate the types of health plans and choice available to citizens. End result, Barry will push Americans into the "public option" and voila, government takes over healthcare. A clear formula for success, government deciding it can create and control economic prosperity. The Founders are doing somersaults. For the slow learners, most who do not understand the Founders reference, review some more recent history like the boffo successes of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG, Chrysler, GM, and medical care in the UK and Canada.

So what to do...lets all turn out together on Wednesday!

The big question...where will the transparent one be visiting? Anyone know? I would assume this man of the people wants the people to turn out...right? Who's with me? I completely disagree with me leftist friends regarding the need to rid the world of Islamic terrorists bent on our destruction but will stand arm in arm with you in demanding that our President listen to the citizenry.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

LetsgoPitt, you seem confused. Your Suggestion #1 makes you sound like an anarchist: would you abolish all the cabinet positions, too? How about congressional staff and people in the executive agencies? Your Suggestion #2 makes you sound like you want a dictatorship: do you really think that the president should have the power to sign an executive order requiring Congress to do something? Should the president be able to sack federal judges at will too? Are you opposed to the concept of checks and balances? Why even have a Congress?

When I comparing these profound suggestions with your earlier statement, I am astounded. You said "the left-winge (sic) radicals have slowly taken over government schools and no one konws (sic) what's in the constitution, let alone ever read (sic) it. It's a sad state we are in......" My suggestion to you, captain, is to go read the constitution again, all in one sitting. See if you can imagine the founders approving of either of your suggestions. See if you can determine what their guiding principles were and apply that to your analysis of any policy proposed by your government.

Or, if you think you can articulate a political philosophy that is more comprehensive than "I hate liberals," I am ready to read it

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

FedUPtoo//// I LOVE THIS COMMENT!!! I tried to memorize it....lol.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Don't worry our police are looking for barrel monsters, we probably will have to hire special forces hand picked by Gov.Purdue. He is wasting his time coming here bc we already know how the Democrats work for us in NC, AGAINSTTTTTTTTT!!!HE NEEDS TO SPEND MORE TIME ON PENSYLVANIA AVE. AND GET A REAL PLAN, WHILE OUR GOVERNOR NEEDS NO DISTRACTIONS SO SHE CAN WORK ON OUR BUDGET LIKE SHE PROMISED. Wondering while he is wondering what his real plan really is and wondering when our governor will realize u don't fix a budget with 6 figure incomes for a chosen few and no income for the rest. We won't have to worry in NC about healthcare if our governor stays in office much longer bc we will all be dead from starvation, except for those that she gives jobs making enough that they don't need health ins. or special assistance.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Actually, Agent Pierce, I was trying to reply to your comment, but something
went haywire.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Quite so, quite a pugilistic fellah, always putting up those verbal "dukes" and urging somebody to fight, usually along party lines rather than along issues lines. Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. Eleanor Roosevelt

Re: Obama WAR PROTEST

What???? No Takers? I thought Obama was against the horrible wars we're fighting?

I was. I STILL am? Are there any pacifists LEFT? Or was it just a ruse to get Obama in the whitehouse?

Remember how we chided McWhatshisname? When he said we'd fight for 100 years if necessary? Obama was going to end the wars? When will it end??

I can't believe that Everyone is PRO-WAR now.

We have record level troop deployment, and record losses on our side -- This was the bloodiest month on record.... AND you know We've got to be kicking the heLLo out the locals -- The pro-war corporate media never reports those numbers. And what the heck are we doing there anyway? Looking for UBL? Puh-lease!

Gitmo is still up and running, We'll be in IRAQ for another 2 years, and we're surging into Afghanistan. GWB's IIIrd term?

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Just what north carolina needs another crooked democrat politician. Maybe if were lucky he will make Bev a czar or somthing and get her out of the governor's mansion.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

I could fix the economy in six days by doing the following:
1. Sign executive orders eliminating all federal offices and departments not allowed by the Constitution: i.e. all the new "czars"; the NEA; PBS; etc...
2. Sign an executive order requiring the House and Senate to review all bills and laws that are outdated, hinder progress, are not permitted by the consitution, or otherwise are not logical. That would first require those esteemed friends of Sen. Burd to read the 10th ammendment....hah!

3. Cut taxes accross the board.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

What, no mass protest organized here to send Obama back to Africa? No organized effort to prove he is Kenyan, marxist, racist, socialist, communist, muslim, America hater? C'mon people..surely there is a hate wing rebel confederate inspired lynch party ready to Take Back America in NC right?

Re: choice, choice, choice...nurses, nurses, nurses

YEs, please get the govervment out of the health care business, and out of all our business!! Read the consititution, people!!!!! If you did, you would not vote for these tax and spend liberals and whacked-out socialists. Ahh, but see, the left-winge radicals have slowly taken over government schools and no one konws what's in the constitution, let alone ever read it.
It's a sad state we are in......

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Now taking odds on how many "Obama's a furriner" nutbags will show up.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Woopie Ding Dong!!!! Are we supposed to be EXCITED?????? As bad as our state is hurting for money, now we have to pay for SECURITY for barack HUSSEIN obama to come in to town to pitch his socialism...and we could watch it on TV for free........how much is this gonna cost us!!!! And if our NC legislators would get off their duff and finish the budget... we could get on with it! They should be locked up until they can decide on something. I am sure it takes time to figure out how they can come out best for themselves! And oh.. according to BEV you are not rich unless you make over $500,000 per year... WOW... If that is rich then I hate to see what my measley $35,000 per year is! I hope the FBI that rounded up all the crooks in NJ are hiding out somewhere in Raleigh... they could fill all the jails with Raleigh crooks.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

the feds will be as successful at effectively managing a national healthcare system as they are at everything else.....in other words, it will be a national healthcare disaster....

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday -- PEACE PROTEST?

Who's organizing? I'm in!

The latest deaths brought to at least 30 the number of American service members who have died in Afghanistan this month — two more than the figure for all of June 2008, which had been the deadliest month for the U.S. since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion.

July's death toll for the entire U.S.-led coalition, which includes American, British, Canadian and other forces, stands at 55 — well over the previous record of 46 deaths suffered in June and August of 2008.

I notice that quetou likes to use trite insults and pithy name-calling in his comments. That's his choice.

I hope my fellow Right-wing Fanatics (RWFs) can see how small and sad that makes him and whatever he is trying to say. I urge "people like me" to not "act like him".

But ultimtely its each poster choice.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Where on God's earth did you make up such numbers. Only the Democrats could try this stunt. If he went to Camp David for the weekend---is that vacation--or do you work 7 days a week??

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

O boy, can't wait.......needs to go to durham though.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Healthcare is now a 2nd amendment right? The second amendment has less to do with self protection then it does the establishment of a militia. That is perhaps the most perverse interpretation of the Constitution! Ed Schultz give you that gem? Nah, sounds more like Maddo...

Generally the "general welfare" clause is what's cited, but still bares no relevance on the aguement. Healthcare INSURANCE is not a right, neither is a JOB, nor a HOUSE, nor a CAR, nor a COLLEGE EDUCATION, not even food is a right.

Like O'Bama said - the Constitution is all about what the Gov't cannot due to you, not what it should do for you.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

I'm cautiously optimistic about the Obama presidency so far, but I wish he'd stay away. Every time Pres. Bush came here it tied up traffic for hours. I was hoping part of Obama's change was to go somewhere else for a while.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

"Health Care is a commodity, not a right! Say it ten times a day and make sure that your elected officials know this as well."

Says who? A good number of the people think that this is a NAtional Security Issue and that i should be able to exercise my 2nd ammendment right to protect myself against poor health. The right to bare arms does not simply mean to own a gun, it means that we have a right to protect ourselves which is exactly what healthcare helps us do. A lot of us believe that the supreme court should have stepped in long ago an ruled private insurance/health care to be unconstitutional.

Healthcare also allows us to prosper as a society as not only are we healthier but we will inturn be more educated as a population about our environment and what our bodies are put through on a daily basis.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

@jeffreyhsykes: if, as you predict, some businesses stop paying for their employees' health insurance, i fail to see how that amounts to "forcing" anyone into a public health option. Some people may "choose" to purchase coverage under a public plan, and others may prefer to buy their own insurance through a private company (like millions already do and like I did when I worked on a contract basis). Each person's decision would depend on which plan the individual thought provided the best value for their money. Am I missing some market failure that you can articulate here?

Besides, market theory would suggest that if an employer yanks a person's benefits, the employer would have to provide a comparable amount of increased compensation in some other fashion. Otherwise the employee would just take a new job.

Finally, experience suggests that rather than "dumping" a bunch of employees, businesses would continue to fund benefits for existing employees while making alternate arrangements for new hires and employees who want a different arrangement. To a large extent, this trend is already underway.

Why in the world we think that your insurance should be subsidized by the government only if your employer buys it for you is a mystery to me. If a subsidy is warranted at all, it should apply to everyone equally.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

"That is equal to everything Bush spent in 8 years and then some. "

Obama is spending money to fix the problems that the Bush administration has caused. You're crazy if you think that on 1/20/2009, the country developed serious economic problems. It's been going for a long time, and a lot of it was because of the trillions wasted in Iraq.

And what problems did Bush cause?

Bush wasn't responsible for the banking deregulation. That has been in place since Reagan was president. Nobody complained back in the late 80s when Reagan started to deregulate the banking industry so that they wouldn't have to bailout the Savings and Loans. And people didn't complain when the economy was flying high from these same deregulations in the 90s. But as soon the wind gets kicked from the sails it is all "Bush's fault".

And did Bush cause 911? Again, we knew about Bin Laden since the Reagan era (anybody remember the Oliver North trial). That means there was 3 Presidents before Bush Jr that did nothing about it or even cared.

And as for Iraq ... please. World War 2, Korea, and Vietnam all were started under the Democrats watch. The first time a Republican tries to bring "life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness" to a foreign land and the Democrats raise a fit. Or would you prefer that Sadam continued to surpress his own people?

As for the cost of oil, that was unforseen by everyone. In 2006, if you told somebody that they would be paying almost $5 / gallon for gas in a year, you would have be laughed at strait to your face. Did Bush have oil connections? Yes, but it was the stock markets that dictated the cost / barrel. Neither Bush nor Chaney had any direct control over this.

And finally, if somebody's argument can be paraphrased as "Bush spent money so why not Obama". That is weak. That is the type of response I would expect from a 5 year old asking for candy when his two year old just finished eating a piece. At least when Bush started "his war", we could claim to have the money to spend. But Obama is leaving the gate knowing that he has to borrow every dime he spends on his projects. And there is no shortage of projects on his list.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Whatever, anything is better than listening to old gay military guys buried in vocabulary that is so banal and contrived it bored Hannibal to death.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

you are incorrect.

Clinton changed the CRA himself while in office.

Then the government walked into to the banks and said "if you want a good CRA number then you have to give loans to the risky people." All this in the name of diversity of course. And they advertised these numbers and scored every bank, so essentially banks had to do this.

Forced may be a strong word... perhaps coerced would have been a better word.

And THEN to help this along Clinton put his cronies at the tops of Fannie/Freddie and they started guaranteeing these loans. So essentially this made the mortgage industry feel better about this, and then greed and such really took off.

But the government is the one to blame because this social re-engineering started with them.

Look, you want to fix all the greed and such that you see everywhere? START WITH THE GOVERNMENT, because they are the ones to blame here.

Re: choice, choice, choice...nurses, nurses, nurses

@ishley :"The health plan currently being developed by Congress in collaboration with the President Obama's administration will allow everyone to keep their same health care plan if they are satisfied."

What you fail to take into consideration is that employers will dump providing coverage for employees (that's were most folks get insurance)forcing millions into the government plan.

The government has no business taking control of this segment of the economy. Period.

The public option is against the common sense that has guided this country since its founding.

Surely they can first work on cutting costs, containing price inflation and reducing fraud before they expand the government's role in the economy?

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Is that first hand experience? I have never had a fundable diagnosis private or public, and I am strong, smart, and proven capable of good things. Best I figure I am gulible with harm induced critical thinking stand-stills which have left me badly crimped.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

I am tired of hearing this worn out line "Bush took 8 years to ruin our economy and you want 6 months for Barack to fix it ..."

Bush didn't ruin the economy. American consumers on steroids provided by low interest rates and investment bankers across the globe repackaging your debt as investment products ruined the economy.

The government and the economy are two different things.

Either way, Mr. Obama owns the China shop now and so anyone still talking about Bush is spouting non-sense.

The current policies being put forth by the Democrats in Raleigh and Washington are nuts. Raising taxes on investors and small businesses will kill the economy. I guess some of you will be happy then because government will be the last employer left.

I oppose that completely.

Folks in my family in the Triad have been laid off in the past and we fight like hell to get a new job or the education needed to move forward.

Quit asking for the government to help you.

When our soldiers were on the beach at Normandy or landing on Wake Island they didn't turn around and ask somebody for help. The dug in and fought their way forward.

That's what we need to do. Not tax the very segments of society that create the jobs so many of us are looking for.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

People with health insurance are already paying for people without health insurance by default (passing on unpaid expenses to those paying, because Lord knows we cannot sacrafice profit). We need to do something radical. Our current system is baloney. I would probably chose to not recieve treatment if I develope a life threatening problem than allow my family to be finacially devestated (I do have insurance). Sad state of affairs. The Europeans subsidze heavely healthcare. They tax heavily gasoline. The USA subsidizes gasoline. They allow the cost of healthcare to be twice what it is in Europe. Screwed up priorities to say the least. Personally, I would prefer healthcare be totally socialized. Take the profit aspect out of healthcare, it should not be treated as a commodity.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Which one of the N&O staff is going to ask Obama about tort reform? Or is that question off the fax sent out to the press the day before??

Oh and by the way Weeks... part of "live the dream" is work to earn it, not wait for or demand that goverment provide it for you.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

As a retired military officer, I respect my President even though I may not always agree with his policies. It's interesting to hear some of the many derogatory comments that many Americans make about our President.

These are the same people that demand respect from others, yet they are not forthcoming with it themselves. They should be happy they're in a country where they can feel free to say negative things about our leaders, and not have their tongues cut out.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

And Bush spent half of his Administration in Crawford on vacation (more than any US prez), took 8 years to ruin our economy and you want 6 months for Barack to fix it while staying in the oval office for you to only call him a socialist? When he fixes healthcare and the economy, you better start turning cartwheels to get his autograph!

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Maybe all you Archie Bunkers can protest thathe resign? maybe you can seize the opportunity to name Palin or newt your president. Maybe you can form a group to succeed from the union? maybe you can yell from him to go back to Africa? Maybe you can corner him into admitting that he pal's around with terrorist and that he is a black panther racist communist socialist marxist? What other names do you knuckledraggers have for him?

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

therightscoop,Bottom line, i will counter any argument you can make with fact and logic. Something that escapes you.
Dems did not FORCE banks to do anyting, they merely made money available to them incase the banks wanted to take the loans. THE BANKS and WALL STREET decided to take advantage of those policies to scheme more money from people. They targeted the risky borrowers, sealed the deal and then sold the loan. DO NOT EVER put that blame on the lawmakers who were trying to make sure every American could "live the dream".

Your next point, the dems blocked that legislation becuase they did not want to provide tax cuts for the top 2%.

Stop bringing up old arguments that have already be debunked. Next you are going to tell me that the president is not American born.

This is how the "right" works... its called misinformation and they are the kings of it. Why do you think Faux decided to NOT cover the press conference the other night? They don't want the other side to be heard.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

The only notable thing Wednesday is to avoid I-40 when he is arriving!

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

The big O is an entitlement black with a socialist, Marxist, Communist agenda!

His visit needs to be met with protests everywhere he goes while he is here!

Re: choice, choice, choice...nurses, nurses, nurses

The health plan currently being developed by Congress in collaboration with the President Obama's administration will allow everyone to keep their same health care plan if they are satisfied. It will also significantly enhance a competitive market for health care by removing interstate restrictions on insurance plans and allowing employees to keep their same plan when they change jobs. I can't understand why any logical person would opppose these reforms. I particularly can't fathom why anyone who claims to be an economic conservative would do anything other than cheer such capitalist measures.

Also, in my personal opinion, the main problem behind the costs of health care is that we have far, far too few nurses. Everytime I have a health question I call my friend who's a nurse. Nine times out of ten she is able handle the matter perfectly. I would imagine that if we increase the supply of nurses by a factor of 3, 5, 10, or 12, all of a sudden we'd have widespread, high quality, and extremely affordable health care. Doctors are often (though not always) superfluous, and the paucity of doctors, particularly general practitioners, results in artificially high charges for patients, which are then paid by insurance or Medicaid.

PS. NC Interpol says "This country was founded by people who wanted to break away from big government"

That's ridiculous. You should read the Declaration of Independence again to remember that the founders wanted more government, not less. They just wanted representative government instead of colonial tyranny. Representative government of the type that, you know, can "promote the general welfare."

PPS...Paul, you're not the dumbest poster on this thread

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

WELL SAID.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

weeksgroove wrote- "The only way to keep healthcare costs down and cover everyone is a single payor system run by us. Everyone other developed nation that does it that way "

Yeah, yeah. But we were the first country to tell the monarchies- "You got it wrong!" So why do we have to do it their way? Oh, I forgot, the Democrats don't want to LEAD the world, they want to apologize for our existence!

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

So people have a problem with a president that tries to put money into the US economy, but they were perfectly fine with the former president spending $1 trillion on a war where we cannot locate a 6'6" Arab with an oxygen tank with our multi-billion dollar technologies.
Not to mention all the people that died so that oil prices would stay in flux and the oil companies reaped record profits. And lets not forget how the former vp award his former company a multi-billion dollar package to rebuild the areas that we dropped multi-million dollar weapons on. I guess that makes a lot of sense, huh?

"In 1995, however, the total was about $116 billion. That's 8% of a budget of $1519 billion.

Now, that's certainly real money, but compare it to the 33% of the budget spent on Social Security and Medicare; the 21% spent on defense; the 15% spent in interest on the national debt, or the 8% spent on handouts to business (farm subsidies, S&L and bank rescues, export/import assistance, tax credits, guaranteed loans, reimbursement for advertising, etc.).

Here's how it breaks down:

Medicaid (excluding aid to aged, disabled, blind) - $32 billion
AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children) - $22 billion
Food stamps - $27 billion
Housing subsidies - $22 billion
School breakfast/lunch programs - $6 billion
Head Start - $3.5 billion
Miscellanous programs - $3 billion
Folks, it's just not the case that Your Moneytm is being stolen and given to the wastrel poor. Most of Your Money (three quarters of it) is spent on defending you, supporting you in old age or unemployment, protecting the money you have in the bank, keeping farmers and big business happy, and paying interest."

Wuptdo,

Keep up the good work in demonstrating how narrow minded, childish, and uninformed you are.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Oh so that's why Bush and the republicans wanted to pass the LARGEST regulation reform on the mortgage industry back in the early 2000's - because they are greedy capitalists.

But who blocked it in hearings?

The Democrats.

Quit drinking koolaid and spouting talking points. The elite left forced the banks to loan money to people who couldn't pay it back, which started this whole bubble that burst. Why would anyone want to loan money to people who can't pay it back? To CRIPPLE the system.

They want control of you and me, but it looks like they might already have you.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

Not doubt, from Gov. Bev to the lowest official in the local demokrat party as well as the editor of the NandO and WRAL, will be there licking the boots of their Fuhrer.

Health Care is a commodity, not a right! Say it ten times a day and make sure that your elected officials know this as well.

Just ask yourself:
Why do we own a car company?
Why do we own a bank?
Why do we want to kick out the private sector in health care?
Why are they kicking out the private sector in Fed. school loans?"

Becuase you and your greedy capitalist business owners have already proven that you will not self-regulate or even act as if they are operating in the best interest of people.
With the Banks, again, if they could self-regulate, we wouldn't have had to.. but because they got too big without any oversight, letting them fail would have crashed our economy to the point of no return.

Stop being a faux news sheep and actually learn the facts. It's idiots like this that keep America from moving forward. It's called Ignorance and you are fueling it.

Re: Obama coming to Raleigh Wednesday

It's amazing to hear the same weak bs from some of you.

First, Obama has not taken any vacation trips that were not already part of trips to those countries for state business. Russia, was a nigh out during his visists with Putin and Medvdedev.

Second, this statement "This country was founded by people who wanted to break away from big government and it only took 6 months to get so far from our founding principles." is DEAD WRONG.

We were founded on the belief that governemtns could not impose of force its will onto it's people. Which is why we have a governmt of us, for us and by us. and Before you say anything.. THE PEOPLE WANT GOVERNMENT HEALTHCARE... FAUX News and it;s sheep want to continue our greedy business practices becuase they are already at the top of that pyramid but the majority of people who have acutally stupided and thought about this issue know the only way to achieve 100% coverage and low costs is governement run health.

Third, we are the governemnt, so why shouldn't we run our own healthcare. Conversatives wnat you to believe that there are "we" the people and then there is "they" the governement. This is just stupid. We are We, of us for us, by us.

The only way to keep healthcare costs down and cover everyone is a single payor system run by us. Everyone other developed nation that does it that way has better results and better health and lower costs than our "Good old boy needs to get paid" system of healthcare.

It's sad to see how ignorant people in this country continue to be and how stubbornly they refuse to counter that behavior.
