Obama agrees to N.C. debate

Barack Obama has agreed to a debate in North Carolina on April 19.

The debate, at a site to be determined, will be hosted by CBS and moderated by Katie Couric and Bob Schieffer.

Obama's campaign just announced that he would participate. No word yet on whether Hillary Clinton will be there.

Katie Couric and Schieffer hosting this debate? Can they get anymore milquetoast than that???

'Sen. Obama, how do you account for the outrageous pulpit comments made by your pastor of 20 years? Do you feel that the IRS should shut them down?'

Why not hold the debate over in Mount Pilot?

Barack Obama's got a grin as wide as Andy Griffith's, and Hillary Clinton can get you back on track just like Aunt Bee used to do. So Mount Airy wouldn't be fair to Hillary because of how popular Andy is there.

Of course, they could hold the debate in Siler City because that's where Frances Bavier lived later on in her life. But that might not be fair to Barack.

And they'd better not hold the debate up in the mountains, or Ernest T. Bass might come and try to break up the proceedings by demanding a place on a primary ballot along with Obama and Clinton. Unless of course the Darlings would sing a sweet bluegrass ballad to help calm everybody down.

How about Raleigh? If Barney could catch the jewelry thief in the Capital City, then maybe by agreeing to debate one another in Raleigh, Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton can figure out just who's got their fingers in the congressional cookie jar and running up such high federal budget deficits these days.

"You give them $10 million and they'll take $15. You give them $15 million and they'll take $20...

And don't let Bob Schieffer of CBS get away before doing an interview with The N&O on the good ol' days of his Texas newspaper experiences out in Fort Worth before he switched over to television news. That interview about Schieffer's newspapering years back in Cowtown should definitely be held in the Bull City of Durham.
