North Carolina Multiple Offense

Fred Smith says a quote from Clarence "Biggie" Munn changed his life.

On the stump, the Republican gubernatorial candidate credits a line from the famed football coach's 1953 book, "Michigan State Multiple Offense," for inspiring his work ethic:

"We have only one sign in our dressing room at Michigan State: 'The Difference Between Good and Great is a Little Extra Effort.'"

But it's not the only advice in the book Munn offers for the football field that could be applied to the campaign trail.

Here are some other memorable quotes:

"I would like to emphasize a coaching point that we make to our backs at least four times each day. That is, we want them to do everything at top speed, feeling that we can slow down on Saturdays but that we cannot speed up."

"I would like to stress a slogan we have, and that is 'Know what to do and do it hard."

"We all preach the importance of unity to our players; consequently, the staff should not only preach unity but live by it."

"If you win, there is glory for everyone, and if you lose, there is glory for no one."
