Non-U.S. citizens may have voted in N.C. elections

A review by the State Board of Elections has determined that 637 resident aliens may be registered to vote in North Carolina.

The issue was discovered when the board cross checked the names of 6.1 million registered voters against the driver's license database from the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles.

The analysis found 637 names and addresses of voters whose license information indicated they are "legal presence" drivers — meaning they were not U.S. citizens but that they were here legally when the DMV issued them ID. It is unclear whether some or all of these voters may have become U.S. citizens and registered to vote at some point after receiving their driver's licenses.

In an attempt to find out, the lawyer for the State Board of Elections, Don Wright, has sent a letter to all 637 people asking them to present proof of citizenship. If not proof is provided or the board does not receive a response, those flagged by the review will be removed from the voting rolls.

Below is a sample of the letter sent to the voters in question.

Hello?

Is there anyone home?

I registered in 1973

which is the first year, I believe that 18 year olds could register to vote in NC.  My birthdate is on my original registration card in the local board of elections office.  This was verified today.  Since legal age is a requirement of voter registration why would you think that your birthdate was not on a registration card.

Obviously you are trying to justify someone 110 years old voting so I will give you another problem to work on:  How do you justify a person voting in 2009 using their dorm address from 1996?  My answer would be:  another slow learner.

Quite a rant

wafranklin - instead of just spewing stuff, what about actually citing somethng to back up your claims. Civitas posts our work on the web.

On Voter Photo ID in NC, It is not something Civitas made up, it is what NC voters think should happen. (www.nccivitas.org/2011/civitas-poll-voters-continue-demand-requiring-photo-id-vote/)  If they think there is a problem, there is a problem!

The usual suspects

For the person who mentioned Civitas' view of illegal voters, Civitas is junk!  It is infested with rightwing liars and fools, all of whom are funded by Art Pope and other rich kids who bought the last elections and are preparing to buy 2012.  Civitas is for third rate minds.  When I see Civitas quoted, I know that the posting/cite is likely (92%) a simple and direct lie - they cannot help themselves-they are compulsive.  And to think that the General Assembly is being infected by the likes of Civitas and that astroturf trash, Americans for Prosperity (not in your life).  Americans for Prosperity are paid for by the Koch brothers who have sponsored the morons who are trying to bring
Wisconsin and Ohio to their knees.  I also read widely from the Locke people, another group which could not find a simple truth if assaulted by it.  It is painful but some rational folks have to keep a watch on the rightwing in this state and others.

We do NOT have a voter fraud problem!  NCBOE has proven that time and time again.  A slippage rate of less than .01% is far better than one gets in large commercial operations and reflects the care and good jobs done by the BOE.  The Republicans are listening to the dog whistle which their corporate masters use to alert them to bark and run around--for the simple purpose of intimidating and suppressing old, infirm, minority and lower class voters (all of which the Republicans have decided are Democrats and if eliminated will give them some further chance to screw up government, as they are in the process of doing now).  I keep asking Republicans and their legislators, "Where are the jobs"?  Instead they insist on idiocies like the voter photo ID; ruining our public schools with a voucher program and uncapped charter schools which will have some friendly business types running them, unaccountably; and insuring that corporations do not pay taxes, rather that we ruin the state through such things as TABOR-which ruined Colorado; making NC safe for the Christian Taliban and their maddrassas.

The only thread running through all the legislation introduced by the Republicans is to punish and defund Democrats!  They are not interested in the finer points of governing.  This not ready for prime time group is flailing and will leave the state in a condition where it will flail for decades over the destruction being wrought through petulance and ignorance.

voter registration

People sometimes put their ignorance out to air for everyone to read.   Anyone that knows anything about voter registration in NC knows that the State of NC went to a statewide voter registration system approximately 10 years ago.  (One of the first in the nation to develop their own voter registration system, which is now mandated by the Federal Government and a model for all other states).   Previously when people registered to vote in the 50's, 60's and 70's you did not have to list your birthdate.   Therefore, anyone that has been registered for years had no birthdate to transfer to the new system, therefore, when these people were converted to the new state system they were given a generic birthdate that would immediately alert election workers that their birthdate is not correct (ie, birthdates showing people over 110 years of age).   Some people are not smart enough to realize this is a way to alert the election workers so that accurate records can be obtained and in fact, thousands have been corrected since the system has been implemented.   Just another way for the ignorant to make lies out of honest attempts to implement a better system.

Wake up sheeple!

So at what point will the number be enough for those of you who can't be bothered to care that non-citizens are being allowed to vote in our elections? Seriously, you people make me sick. Your pathetic apathy is why we're in the state we're in as a country.

Agreed. But....

Assuming you have the same name and address for your Voters Registration and DL then, with at least some basic competence in the NC BOE they should have found the Correlation. Oops... my mistake assuming basic competence of NC Government.

Sure I registered to vote in

Sure I registered to vote in my county, but that wouldn't update the DMV database.

Voter Registration Card

I assume you registered to vote in your county, and got a Voters Registration card as proof of citizenship; so I am not sure why you would have been flagged. The voting  roles should have reflected your new voter registration and US citizenship . The "Perfect" NC Government again.

From one of the 637...

I am one of the 637 people who would have been flagged by this check.

As the story says, lots of people will become US citizens between the eight-yearly renewals of their drivers license... I got my NC license five years ago, when I was a legal permanent resident (aka green card holder), but became a citizen two years ago. I didn't need to get my drivers license renewed until recently, so the information kept by the DMV would have been out of date for quite a while.

Well over half a million people become naturalized citizens each year across the US, so you would expect upwards of 15,000 to 20,000 of those to be in North Carolina. Not all of those are of voting age, of course, but I strongly suspect that new citizens are more likely to vote than average (naturalization is an expensive and bureaucratic process). So, with drivers' licenses renewed every 8 years, I'm kind of surprised there weren't more than 637 people...

illegal voters

This is no surprise since any mention of proof of citizenship is decried by the demrats as discrimination.  The demrats also want criminals to vote and have been pushing for it since they figure they will get most of them.  They really look out for the best interests of our country and state don't they.

Duh...

the constitution - that says voting is limited to citizens.

Paying Taxes in this Country doesn't make you a US Citizen

Legal or Illegal Aliens have allegiance to another country.

To become  a US citizen you must renounce any other citizenship, and theoretically at least you must defend the US against foreign attacks and abide by the Laws of the US.

.

Why shouldn't Legal Resident Aliens be allowed to vote?

Legal alien residents went through proper channels and paperwork to live and work in the US.  They met the criteria for doing so....and pay all taxes the same as a US Citizen.

Might want to check your math...

637 is slightly over 0.01% of the registered voters in the state.

And of course there's no actual evidence that these people weren't naturalized before they registered to vote, as mentioned in the article.

Tip of the ICEBERG

637 folks found during an automated check of 2 databases. This is only the TIP of the ICEBERG folks. Civitas discovered that over 2000 110 year olds cast ballots in the 2010 General Election;

"So far in early voting 110 year olds have made a pretty good showing; 2214 of them have voted either by mail or at a one-stop site (214 by mail and 2,000 at early voting sites).  There are 1,420 Democrats in this group, 717 Republicans and 77 Unaffiliated voters."

And then we have this info;

"A Granville County senior citizen cast their ballot here in NC during early voting. I mean a REALLY SENIOR CITIZEN. They were 11 years old when the US Civil War began in 1861."

Proof of Citizenship doesn't cost, lack of Citizenship does

Your Voter's registration card doesn't cost money,  Social Security card doesn't cost money, your Birth Certificate should be available to you from your parents or a copy can be had cheaply from County records.

Citizenship requires effort and cost. Should we provide gas money/bus fare to the polls?

You have to do some minimum effort. I had to register for Selective Service at my cost and am not really excited to be drafted if that occurs but it is my civic duty as a US Citizen.

Illegal voting

People are being turned away at Loaves & Fishes because they do not have a picture ID. They cannot afford the ID. Do you think these people will spend the $ to have a picture ID when it comes to that versus food?

Poll workers have the right to ask for proof of ID when you go to vote, so why don't they just do their job and ask?

Incorrect

You only have the "Right" to Vote if  a Person can PROVE they are a US Citizen.

Do your  civic duty.

Existing in this Country doesn't give you a "Right" to vote.

As expected, The Non-Citizens are Voting

Unfortunately, One Political Party in the US is protecting and encouraging Illegal voting.[ This is the same one which has Dead people voting in the Chicago elections.], So that they can get a political advantage.

To vote you should need to have proof of citizenship to vote.. Do your civic duty and have it. Just like you need a Driver's license to drive and need to have it with you when you drive or face penalties. Have your voter's registration card, passport , Drivers license or birth documents with you.

Again the defenders of Illegal voting are the same ones who want to have the "Whole World" voting in the US election.

Illegal voting

I am sorry you were inconvenienced at the Polls But this is a different time in History And our right to vote is precious and precauctions are very necessary.

Non Citizen voting.

Another Sad Day in History Since the Democrats would get most of those votes Common Semse would dictate that we change the way to Register to vote To Elections Offices and not in Back Alleys with Ordinary Citizens.. We also need a Picture I.D. or Better still a Finger Print ID..This would elimate a lot of Fraudulent voting at the Polls. And also with many of the Hispanic voters The Pendulom can swing to the Republican side at any time.

and then you have to ask

And to protect ourselves from those 0.01% of (potentially) illegal voters with some sort of "voter ID card", how many US citizens will be turned away at the polls because they have no passport or copy of their birth certificate?  Probably more than 0.01%.

It's critically important to not give government officials any excuse to take away anyone's right to vote (and more importantly, to have it counted).

What cost 100% guarantee?

Let’s check the math: If the Number of registered voters is 6,092,473 and If all 637 voted illegally, what percentage would that represent?

Well, 637,000 would be 10% of registered voters; 63,700 would be 1%; 6,370 woud a tenth of a percent; and 637 would represent one one-hundredth of a percent.

What would it cost to provide standard identification cards, with photographs, for every registered voter? Would that remedy justify the expense?

Just asking.

Non-U.S. Citizens Voting

It took only 312 votes in a recount to put Al Franken into the U.S. Senate and ultimately give us Obamacare.  Compare that to the 637 "potential" illegal voters in NC elections and you can see how very important it is that only citizens vote.  And 637 is probably only a drop in the bucket. Consider how the system is rigged to prevent providing citizenship ID.   Utility companies now are the real immigration service because it takes only the first bill from a utility and a false "citizenship" check on a voter application to register and vote all at the same time.  In the past, some DMV's allowed even Mexican matricular cards and IRS Taxpayer ID numbers to be used as valid ID's.  Couple that with Motor Voter Laws that provided a voter registration form along with a new license for that fake ID, and ask yourself if our elections are any better than the ones in Venezuela or Egypt.  How many of us look around at the polls and can identify the ones who shouldn't be there?  Time to clean up the registration process and demand proof of U.S. citizenship before voting.

Is this a push for Voter ID Law?

I hope this is not a push for voter ID law. Registered voters in North Carolina for the 2009 year was 6,092,473 so 637 illegally REGISTERED voters is a little over 1%. Not enough to warrant the cost of instituting a Voter ID law, not to mention the man hours that will go into it.

Also, just because they registered illegally does not mean they voted. The people at the voting polls have a right to ask for ID/proof, I for one was questioned when I went to the polls, and I am a white woman with blond hair.
