Newspaper endorsements: Governor

Editorial boards of the state's major newspapers are making their endorsements in the governor's race.

Here are links to the major unsigned editorials written so far about Republican Pat McCrory and Democrat Beverly Perdue:

Charlotte Observer: McCrory. "McCrory would bring an urgently needed energy to the office. While we don't agree with him on every issue, he knows where he stands on most aspects of state government and why he stands there."

Raleigh News & Observer: McCrory. "Bev Perdue is a good candidate, but McCrory suits the moment. He's loaded with energy and fresh ideas. On several levels, he could be just what this state needs."

Asheville Citizen-Times: McCrory. "Though we disagree with him on some issues, we recommend McCrory because we believe he is best suited to lead the state in meeting the challenges that confront it as a result of rapid growth."

Greensboro News-Record: McCrory. "But McCrory is steadier and more assured on the issues. He takes a more meat-and-potatoes approach to leadership, a pattern that has played out more often than not in Charlotte. That's what the state needs in its next governor."

Winston-Salem Journal: McCrory. "A city-oriented governor, we believe, will help shape policies for the kind of state North Carolina is now and will be during this century."

Durham Herald-Sun: McCrory. "One of McCrory's strengths for voters in Durham and the Triangle is his familiarity with urban issues. He knows about the problems cities like Durham face, including crime, poverty and transportation."

High Point Enterprise: McCrory. "It is McCrory's demonstration in Charlotte of the kind of leadership and vision that moves people, communities and states forward - working together - that makes him stand out as the candidate who should become North Carolina's next governor."

Wilson Times: McCrory. "During the state's gubernatorial debates, several of which were skipped by Perdue, McCrory has come across as a pragmatic leader who could translate his executive experience in Charlotte to the statehouse in Raleigh."

Wilmington Star-News: Perdue. "Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue communicates a keener appreciation of what ordinary North Carolinians are going through at this difficult time, possibly because her pre-political background in education and health care put her in contact with people whose voices go unheard in Raleigh."

Greenville Daily Reflector: Perdue. "As a resident of the East, she knows the plight of towns and cities here, and recognizes that job creation and a strong investment in infrastructure and education remain the best course for this region."

Southern Pines Pilot: Perdue. "All things considered, North Carolina would be better off with a highly qualified governor who can hit the ground running and won't require a lot of on-the-job training. That candidate is Bev Perdue."

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

I just watched McCrory's top ten list, and I am appalled that this is not enough to turn off each and every voter in North Carolina. Playboy Pat is absolutely an embarrassment to all of us. What grown man running for a public office actually talks like this? "Sarah Palin is hotter in person"?
Vile, disgusting and absolutely without any reasonable defense.
PS No serious voter would "get" Perdue to say Biden or anyone is "hotter in person". We would not and she would not. What a juvenile and cavalier bunch you McCrory supporters are! There is no place for this kind of language in politics (unless McCrory used this in high school and thinks it will still work).

Is that right?

My computer only made it to the first (#10) on Mayor McCrory's list, which was "Sometimes I don't know what town I'm in."

:)

All these little towns, and each one actually gave itself a name...

Harrison that video is of no use to the voters and the real issues. Try this one on for size.

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

I got you. In case you're interested, here's the clean(er) version from Fox:

http://www.myfoxcharlotte.com/myfox/pages/InsideFox/Detail?contentId=7639574&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=5.1.1

It's taking forever to load on my cheesy Fisher-Price computer, as the site is extremely "busy", but I think it's the same one.

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

The title at the end uses inappropriate language (McCrory is a w---- dog). I have no problem with the video itself.

Charlotte democrat anticipates Perdue loss

Anthony Foxx, in his 2nd term as an at-large Charlotte city council member is getting the jump on his democratic competitors as he announces his run for Mayor of Charlotte. While Foxx, an African-American would never publicly admit it, this pre-emptive action against folks like Susan Burgess is a clear indication that he expects that Mayor McCrory will be resigning in about 8 days after serving 7 terms as mayor of a city that has a majority of democratic voters.

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

"Video deleted for inappropriate language.

— RTB"

If that was the video I'm thinking about, I have to ask:

Inappropriate language used by whom, Ryan? The Republican candidate for Governor? I thought he "suited the moment", was "loaded with energy and fresh ideas", and could be "just what this state needs"?

I understand your rules, but we're not talking about some casual poster dropping a pseudo curse word into a sentence. It's a guy who, in about nine days, could be residing in the Governor's mansion.

Video deleted for inappropriate language.

Perdue's $4k from trash lobbyist-hypocrite

Apparently, Beverly is the candidate that is cozy with out-of-state trash companies as just last week she received $4,000 from a lobbyist for Sims Hugo Neu, a company that constructs and develops landfills.

Another example of Beverly being a hypocrite for the good of receiving a maximum individual contribution (from someone out of state that obviously has an agenda). Hey Beverly, what have you promised him in return?

Ryan, why don't you report this inconsistent behavior?

Wash Post recognizes McCrory vs. Perdue

Comments from the Washington Post should bring out some more of Beverly's white-hot temper, including:

"Republican candidates have successfully snatched the "change" mantle from the Democratic candidates, and polls show ... the truest of tossups.

In North Carolina, the departure of Democratic Gov. Mike Easley, term-limited out of office, seemed to open the door for his lieutenant governor, Bev Perdue, to step into the governor's mansion.

But Republicans smartly nominated Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, a business-minded, pragmatic politician who has successfully painted Perdue as a defender of the status quo."

Newspaper Endorsement-Daily Tarheel for McCrory

I am pleased that the Daily Tar Heel has chosen to endorse Mayor McCrory despite their democratic leaning (at least when I went to school there). Ryan, please consider adding to the list of newspapers endorsing the candidates as this paper represents over 20,000 students.

Below are some of the thoughts of our younger generation on McCrory & Perdue:
- Perdue, has attempted to brand herself as an enemy of the status quo, although she is anything but. She has served for the past eight years as lieutenant governor and is a product of the state’s Democratic establishment machine.
- It’s clearly time for some fresh leadership, and political insider Perdue could not offer it. McCrory would be a welcome change for Raleigh, and he has the commitment to end the political cronyism that has permeated Raleigh for so long.
- Although both candidates have made transparency a cornerstone of their candidacies, Perdue’s actual record on the issue is scant, whereas McCrory has demonstrated openness during his time as mayor. This issue is extremely important, especially because of the destruction of e-mails relating to the mental health system debacle under Gov. Mike Easley.
- McCrory’s candidacy represents a fundamental change that is desperately needed in an increasingly corrupt and unresponsive Raleigh. His administration would bring a political balance to Raleigh that has long been absent.

See full endorsement below:

In a race that continues to be among the tightest in the state, Pat McCrory is the clear choice for governor.

More important than specific policy is the opportunity that McCrory, a Republican, has to change how politics operates in North Carolina.

And he has the vision and experience North Carolina needs to address the state’s challenges as it experiences massive growth.

We believe that McCrory can take his successful approach to governing Charlotte and apply it to the entire state.

Serving since 1995 as the popular mayor of Charlotte — where Democrats and Independents outnumber Republicans three to one — McCrory has shown the ability to shore up bipartisan support. And he clearly has the experience necessary to take the state’s top job.

McCrory has a long-range vision for a sustainably expanding the transportation infrastructure in the state, including the use of light-rail and clean energy buses.

He oversaw smart growth in Charlotte and was pivotal in bringing light-rail to Charlotte — the only city in the state that has developed a light-rail system.

McCrory is also a strong proponent of investing in green energy technology, which in turn will create new jobs.

His opponent, Democratic Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue, has attempted to brand herself as an enemy of the status quo, although she is anything but.

She has served for the past eight years as lieutenant governor and is a product of the state’s Democratic establishment machine.

It’s clearly time for some fresh leadership, and political insider Perdue could not offer it.

McCrory would be a welcome change for Raleigh, and he has the commitment to end the political cronyism that has permeated Raleigh for so long.

Additionally, Perdue and her Democratic counterparts’ lack of transparency is troubling.

Although both candidates have made transparency a cornerstone of their candidacies, Perdue’s actual record on the issue is scant, whereas McCrory has demonstrated openness during his time as mayor.

This issue is extremely important, especially because of the destruction of e-mails relating to the mental health system debacle under Gov. Mike Easley.

Perdue and McCrory share many policy positions, including some we disagree with.

Both support the 287 (g) program, a controversial initiative that authorizes local law enforcement to identify and detain immigration offenders.

And neither are particularly progressive on abortion or gay rights either.

Yet McCrory, for the most part, is a moderate Republican who has proved he can garner bipartisan support.

We strongly endorse Pat McCrory for governor.

What about Biden "in person."

Some of our fellow Domer’s have gotten upset that Mayor McCrory said that “Sarah Palin is hotter in person.”

Top ten comments the Democrats could say about meeting Biden “in person:”

10. His eye lift hardly shows.
9. You can understand what he says more clearly. In person, every fourth word makes some semblance of sense…..sometimes.
8. His hair is thinner than it looks on TV.
7. He rarely mentions his 36 years of eating from the trough.
6. He jokes that he played golf with George Washington.
5. He jokes that more people have been to Sarah Palin appearances than have ever been to Delaware.
4. He jokes that he gave his clothes allowance to family members.
3. He admits that if he is not elected he will write one-line gaffes for SNL.
2. He admits that Sarah Palin is definitely hotter in person and would sponsor a Constitutional Amendment to that effect.

1. He is hotter in person. Or either he is sweating excessively when they ask him about some of Obama’s socialist policies. When they ask him about his sweating he says, “We need for this election to be over. If he keeps talking he will out-gaffe me……..and I am the King of Gaffe!”

Regardless of which way the election goes, Sarah will still be hotter in person and the Constitutional Amendment has merit. In the words of the editorial board, "When a man loses his regard for the beauty of women, then he does not derive his strength from the people." (It doesn't make sense to me either.)

Re: Carowinds Mayor McCrory has recieved no higher endorsement..

You are complaining that McCrory said that "Palin is hotter in person."

I really do not think that any of the McCrory supporters will mind one bit if Bev says that "Biden is hotter in person." Get her to say that and I, for one, will not complain at all.

Re: Carowinds Mayor McCrory has recieved no higher endorsement..

I do not see anything wrong with the good Mayor commenting that "Palin is hotter in person."

First, he appreciates real beauty.

Second, it is a testament that the cameras do not make her appear more beautiful than she is in person.

Third, I went to see her in person and I can say in complete sincereity that she is stronger than Waffle House Coffee.

Fourth, the good Mayor does not fear praising the beauty of women.

Fifth, his comments may have been made to prove the point that she is more beauftiful than those $150,000 clothes. (She is welcome to go through my wife's closet and take any clothes she might want, although my wife's clothes would probably even be tight on that big Moose she killed.)

Six, "hotter in person" is a term that will appeal to the young voters.

Seventh, appreciating the beauty of women may make Governor McCrory get out of the Governor's Mansion and visit with the people of North Carolina.......as most women in North Carolina have beauty.

Eighth, many of our most beloved Presidents have appreciated the beauty of women....and some have even appreciated some that were not beautiful at all.....but this is America and everyone is equal in the eyes of a lecherous President.

Nine oh nine, it's about time that someone said something nice about Sarah as the main stream media has beat her absolutely to death....traits not consistent with being a true Southern gentleman.

Tenth, it's that voice of Sarah's! And those boots!

Sarah for President!

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

The Daily Tar Heel has endorsed Pat McCrory for Governor.

Carowinds Mayor McCrory has recieved no higher endorsement...

...than that of mayor McCheese.

"You know Palin is hotter in person."

Fry Guys unite! Vote with your potato groin brain, and make a man that admits he hates North Carolina for what it's done to "Charlotte" your new boss.

Mayor McCheese wants to deep fry you ALL! Just move to SC as he says then you won't have to pay taxes in his city of the highest taxes in North Carolina he approved!

"Charlotte has been ripped off," says Pat.

Can we build a wall around Sue Myrick's banking District yet to keep those working people out! Ew, ew, ew, I think I know where I can come up with $700 billion to pay for it! It's now ALL IN CHARLOTTE!

You paid Richard Hudson posters are pathetic. Can I get double mushrooms on my pizza when you get back to your real job?

Democratic Mayors for McCrory

I totally understand how YOU would prefer to have the endorsements of the teamsters, ambulance chasing lawyers and other unions over the endorsements of democratically leaning newspapers from across the state. But since Beverly is putting her various newspaper endorsements on her website, I bet that her white-hot temper is showing since she didn't get endorsements from papers in Raleigh, Wilson and Asheville.

But am I supposed to be impressed that democratic mayors in Raleigh (Charles Meeker), Greensboro (Yvonne Johnson), Durham (Bill Bell) and Winston-Salem (Allen Joines) are supporting the democratic candidate for governor?

Perhaps you should be more impressed that some democratic mayors have broken ranks with Beverly and are among the leaders of Democrats for McCrory, including: (do you think that they easily made these decisions given the potential for political repercussions from the Raleigh status quo)
- Carrboro Mayor Mark Chilton
- Salisbury Mayor Susan Kluttz
- Clayton Mayor Jody McLeod

Please let me know if any Republican mayors announce their support for Beverly.

Apparently other media in NC think better of Carowinds, than....

Carowinds thinks of NC.

"CHARLOTTE IS GETTING RIPPED OFF." -PAT McCRORY

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

I wish I did have more time on my hands, but your obvious challenge intrigues me; so here we go...the following have endorsed Perdue, and I think this volume is much, much louder:
Mayors of Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham, and Winston-Salem
SEANC
Harvey Gantt
Charlotte-Meck. Black Political Caucus
Essentially all of the North Carolina Law Enforcement Agencies
Home and Hospice Care
NC Association of Letter Carriers
NC NOW PAC
NC Association of Nurse Anesthetists
Teamsters
Communications Workers of America
NC Academy of Trial Lawyers
National Women's Caucus
United Transportation Union
National Association of Social Workers
NC Association of Educators
Honestly, don't take my word for it...go to the website

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

It seems to me that pickingperdue has too much time on his/her hands despite the fact that he/she claims to not have enough time to list all of Perdue's union endorsers. The endorsement of Pat McCrory by the Raleigh News and Observer speaks volumes.

Re: Democrats turning against Perdue

Congratulations Mayor McCrory on the endorsement.

I hope other college students will join me in voting for McCrory for governor.

Democrats turning against Perdue

First, a liberal rag says that one of their own is corrupt and awkward.

And now the Raleigh News & Observer endorses for the first time, to the best of my knowledge, a Republican candidate for Governor (they did not even endorse Jim Martin when he ran for re-election)

It is my understanding that the N&O was purchased by Josephus Daniels (with financing from 70 prominent Democrats) in 1894 for the purpose of using the paper to support the Democrat Party.

Hey Beverly: How is your "white-hot temper"?

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

None of those aforementioned newspapers located outside of Eastern North Carolina were willing to endorse Bev Perdue of New Bern for governor. Could this be indicative of an anti-Swiss-American trend in the North Carolina press? Here's to Switzerland's Baron Christoph von Graffenreid, who made early explorations in Eastern North Carolina in the early 18th Century.

Von Graffenreid was making bold and courageous expeditions to the area around New Bern even in the days before Tryon's Palace. Maybe The Charlotte Observer didn't want to forsake its downtown Tryon Street palace by giving a nod to the city which once served as a North Carolina capital from the old Tryon's Palace era.

Maybe the Piedmont's pundits prefer Old Bern, Switzerland, to New Bern, N.C. Wonder what they think of Little Switzerland, N.C., out in the mountains of Western North Carolina?

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

In evaluating endorsements, we should certainly notice substance. Mccrory is described with wording such as...energy, fresh ideas, best suited, experienced, and steadier. Perdue's limited endorsements have alluded to background, resident, and..."she is from here". It is due time for NC to "stop doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result". Mccrory is the person to lead NC in the future.

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

While I enjoy your little alliteration here, I believe you've missed the point. Every few hours a McCrory "fan" wants a newspaper endorsement to be listed (that's pathetically paranoid proreferees). Just thought it might be fair to put all of this into perspective. Does that bother you?

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

You're pretty petty picking.

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

RTB, while you are adding the newspapers, would you please add the following to the list of Perdue endorsements?
National Education Association
NC Law Enforcement
NC Nurses Association
NC State Employees
etc.
etc.
etc.
Just go to Perdue's webpage; I don't have time to list them all...
Does the same person own all of these newspapers?

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

RTB can you please add the Asheboro Courier Tribune to the list of McCrory endorsements. The Courier endorsed him today!!

Re: Basnight as a speaker

I'm not a Basnight fan and I am not hearing impaired. There is nothing wrong with his ability to speak. Individuals that want to criticize indivduals because they believe they cannot articulate their positions in a way that pleases them are probably diverting attention away from specific shortcomings they possess. It is more important and easier to place emphasis on style. We have serious issues facing our state/country and we have individuals that are more interested in a person's speaking ability.

Basnight as a speaker

I love Blackwell's cartoons, but if you've ever heard Basnight speak, you know he has no problem being heard and understood quite clearly.

Whatever you may think of Basnight's politics, he's a terrific stump speaker and a treat to watch and hear.

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

The previous posts contained :"....as one can barely decipher what he is saying."

This reminds me of Blackwell's cartoon when Basnight speaks. Some of us have a hard time understanding him once in a while.

Many of the good old boys can't string too many sentences together........but you gotta love 'em. I guess the Bidenisms will replace the Bushisms on Slate.

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

These newspapers that endorse McCrory may want to send him an "easy to read" version of their papers, as it appears he has trouble understanding concepts. He seems to read incorrectly from the teleprompters in his ads, as one can barely decipher what he is saying. I really don't see a leader of our state as someone who is limited in the critical thinking and public speaking arenas...McCrory needs to stick to calling ball games and playing golf with the elite such as Jim Black and Ken Thompson.

Re: WNC Mountain Man: Quit it

In one of this thread's earlier posts appears that dreaded word : “Deactivated.”

There was a movie back in the 1970’s, “Logan’s Run,” in which all people who reached the age of 21 were deactivated as a population control measure. People who defied the mandate of deactivation were called “runners.” They ran for their lives but were hunted down and deactivated……..and I think the man who hunted them down and deactivated them was called “RTB.”

I think the deactivation that occurs here is more humane. From what I understand, deactivation is as painless as a lethal injection. You go to sleep an active member of the Dome community and awaken “deactivated.” I know that logging on brings a sense of dread to us all……have we been deactivated……..are we the next to face the guillotine?

There is some thought that the “mountain man” is being targeted as he may be the big bearded Palin supporter who has been hassling reporters and has been targeted by ACORN (A Collection of Reporters Not-yet-bought-out .) I don't believe the mountain man would hurt a mouse or a cub reporter. I refuse to believe such vicious rumors as the members of Dome certainly represent a high class community of bloggers…….perhaps the highest class of bloggers in the Southeastern United States. But don’t fight it….fight not deactivation. Don’t let them see you sweat. Take it like a man. Hold your head high and don’t take their blindfold. Don’t accept the condemned man’s last cigarette (it’s probably just an ACORN ploy to register a dead man.)

Deactivation awaits each and everyone of us. Your account is born to die. Forrest Gump’s mother told him, “Deactivation is a part of living.” I only hope that Dome will notify us when a fellow member is deactivated. It would be nice to start a thread in which we could post condolences or sign a guest book. This is America…….people shouldn’t just disappear in the middle of the night! Post an obituary!

In the words of Braveheart: “They can take our land. They can deactivate our accounts. But they’ll never keep us from logging on to the Carolina Journal Online.”

Re: WNC Mountain Man: Quit it

what was he doin, RTB? we need to know the limits around here, lol...

Wilson Times-McCrory should lead state

It's nice to read that a newspaper in Beverly's backyard has endorsed Mayor McCrory as the best leader for the state.

One reason is that during the debates (that Perdue often skipped), he came across as a "pragmatic leader who could translate his executive experience in Charlotte to the statehouse in Raleigh." Their concern with Perdue is that "she has failed to present herself as a leader who would be able to push her ideas to fruition, even in the face of opposition."

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

Add the Wilson Times to the ever growing list of newspapers to endorse Pat McCrory.

Re: WNC Mountain Man: Quit it

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

Maybe you won't hear (no wonder you are for McCrory...neither of you can spell) from me again, but if you vote for McCrory, you will hear four more years of Bush!!!!
Why are you so obsessed about picking of the nose...is it b/c you are doing that and losing brain cells?

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

You know the best thing I can think of is in two weeks this election will be over and pickingperdue can go back to picking his/her nose, and maybe we will be lucky enough not to ever here from you again!!!!!!!!

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

I am not on Perdue's payroll, and instead of pickingmynose (as you so graciously put it) I am picking my brain to determine how anyone could forget that McCrory whined and cried early this summer when he was asked to disclose his "private" mayoral correspondence with Duke Power and the CLT banks. This "charming boyish behavior" (some call it immature and short-tempered...see CLT Observer) was in all the papers, and some people want to accuse Perdue of working behind closed doors??? That's a bit skewed, don't you think? And come to think of it, we never have heard from those "private" dealings with his big buddies like Ken Thompson (ex CEO of Wachovia...and, oh yes, McCrory's golfing buddy...along with Jim Black...and didn't they have a grand ole' time at all the Wachovia big gala events last summer right before it went belly up? HMMMMM how does that humble little mayor afford Myers Park Country Club after all?????

Re: Perdue's transparency claims ring hollow

It is good to hear that the Durham paper is also calling for some transparency with the State's budgeting process that often occurs behind closed doors. Perdue has been a major part of this behavior for years and again it makes unbelievable her claims that she will NOW be open and honest. The Herald Sun can see right through those claims of hers.

In a change election...

You should expect a Governor that needs his poopy pants changed.

Take out the Federal Disaster on State Candidates.

Pat McCroy, the change HE needs.

Re: Newspaper endorsements: High Point

FayObs claims they don't endorse in anything. They just call Robin Hayes useless before attacking Kissell.

Expect the same gossip guided nuance in Governor.

Re: Newspaper endorsements: High Point

Done. It's actually a bit hard to find these endorsements on the various paper's Web sites. (Anyone know if Fay-O has endorsed?) This is a perennial frustration for your blogger.

— RTB

Re: Newspaper endorsements: High Point

Ryan, while I completely understand why the N&O should add Greenville to your list of cities that are endorsing the various candidates for Governor, what is keeping you from listing High Point, particlarly if you are listing cities from across the entire state? The population rankings are below:
- High Point, 100,400 population (8th)
- Greenville, 75,482 (10th)
- Asheville, 72,482

Re: Newspaper endorsements: Governor

Ryan, thanks for this and the other posts in which you recap the major newspaper endorsements. Can you do likewise for the down-ballot races like Council of State, Court of Appeals, Supreme Court? Thanks.

Re: McCrory lied on Ethics Form

This may be crossing the line just a bit. Many of us have lied about having wives on golf trips, business trips or merely a night on the town with the guys. And some men have had thoughts of how they would lead their lives without a wife. Would they remarry, etc?

Lying about having a wife should not be a political issue. It might be a moral or religious issue but those type questions can not be answered on "Under the Dome." Best send this thread over to the sport's blog where there will be a much better understanding of the delicate nature of "bad boys and the women who love them."

Re: Perdue's transparency claims ring hollow

Do you think that the Mayor could borrow Perdue's attorney? Together, they could go to the Ethics Commission and behind closed doors, they could add his wife to the form. It's obvious that Beverly and her attorney have had experience, after the fact, changing financial and perhaps other information on ethics forms. They would probably get off scott free again while others get fired or reprimanded.

A perfect example of where Perdue's transparency claims ring hollow as everything she does is behind closed doors.

McCrory lied on Ethics Form

McCrory lied on his State Ethics form about having a wife.
