N.C. Libertarian Party comes out against marriage amendment

The libertarians have come out against Amendment One, the May 8 ballot measure to enshrine in the state’s constitution the law forbidding same-sex marriage. N.C. Libertarian Party chairman J.J. Summerell has made a YouTube video in conjunction with Protect ALL N.C. Families.

Summerell says he’s opposed because the amendment would “hurt children” by affecting custody and visitation rights and that some would lose health insurance; that it harms families by affecting unmarried heterosexual couples and their children; and that it harms women because it takes away some domestic violence protections. All those points are disputed by the pro-amendment side.

Summerell says the proposed amendment is “fraught with far-reaching unintended consequences.”

Here's the video.

Well Done

The Libertarian Party has made the right call on this one.  The wording of the amendment clearly prevents the state from ever recognizing and regulating civil unions.  That of course doesn't stop any same-sex couple from marrying and starting a family, but it does prevent the courts from taking those relationships into account when dealing with the legal fallout from breakups, deaths in the family, etc.  It's a poorly written, short-sighted, mistake of an amendment, and I hope that my fellow conservatives figure that out before election day.

Bravo!

Good job!
