North Carolina is among the states facing the worst budget shortfalls next year, according to a report by the National Conference of State Legislatures.
NCSL produced a report looking at where states are expecting to be next year as federal stimulus dollars evaporate. In North Carolina, tax increases adopted last year are set to expire, bringing the projected budget shortfall to more than $3 billion.
Texas, North Carolina, New York and California are projecting deficits greater than $1 billion, according to NCSL.

July 30, 2010 - 4:52am — vdvaartI am no reporter, hence qualified to comment in the n&o. The story claims we are "among" states with the highest deficits. The other states listed have deficits greater than 1billion. We have one of 3 billion. Of those states listed our population is far lower (ny, ca, and tx). So, if you look at the actual deficits on a per capita basis (divide the deficit by the population of each state) are we not the undisputed leader in state deficits?

Or is it because the only conclusion that one can come to here doesn't fit your narrative of exculpating Democrats for any perceived wrongdoings and simultaneously indicting all Republicans for everything gone wrong with the world? Wake up and smell some Folger's boys and girls, as Reverend Wright might have said, 'the chickens are coming home to roost.' 100+ years of Democrat legislative hegemony has created this situation, and now the populace is on to the shenanigans. Not even the mighty N&O can send out a big enough smokescreen to cover up this mess. Enough with the mindless spending increases, enough with the cronyism and patronage and patrimony and nepotism. Only an epic sea change will set us back on a course to a well developed and financially sound future. Repeating the mistakes of the past, and re-electing the same mindset is clearly not working.
