Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

Who might Kay Hagan recommend for U.S. attorney?

With the three federal prosecutor jobs opening up sometime next year, the Democratic senator-elect will have a chance to name their replacements.

In talks with local lawyers, Dome has heard a few names come up:

Dan Blue. The former speaker of the state House and current legislator has strong ties to the Obama campaign in North Carolina and would be a familiar name.

Joe Cheshire. A noted defense attorney best known for his work on the Duke lacrosse case, he would be a wild-card pick who would bring a high profile to the job.

Benjamin R. David. The district attorney for New Hanover and Pender counties previously worked for white shoe law firm Kilpatrick Stockton.

Hampton Dellinger. The former deputy attorney general and special counsel to Gov. Mike Easley came in second in his bid for the lieutenant governor nomination this year.

Dewey Hudson. The district attorney in Onslow County was briefly in the national news earlier this year over the case of suspected killer Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean.

Daniel Johnson. The former assistant district attorney in Wake County is an honored veteran who took on an unsuccessful campaign against Rep. Patrick McHenry.

Abe Jones. The longtime Wake County Superior Court judge and former Wake County commissioner once worked in the U.S. attorney's office.

Ripley Rand. A former prosecutor, the son of Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand has served as an appointed Superior Court judge since 2002, though he lost a 2006 election in Wake County.

Scott Thomas. The district attorney for Carteret, Craven and Pamlico counties served in the state Senate from 2000 to 2005 alongside Hagan.

Colon Willoughby. The Wake County district attorney is well-connected in Raleigh and has worked closely with federal prosecutors, most recently on the Jim Black and Thomas Wright cases.

A spokeswoman for Hagan said recently that she is focusing on building her Senate staff right now in order to avoid disruption to constituent services.

I am very pleased with your thought and I did not want to add anything to it. It's a perfect answer from my side.

Ripley Rand is an excellent trial judge. He lost his race against a well respected attorney who is also turning into an excellent trial judge.

I think this is an interesting list. Thanks.

Re: How about McCrory for U.S. attorney?

jarrowood, I understand your reservations. But you also have to be competent to be Governor and look how close he came!

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

I wish I had a Daddy who was Majority Leader of the Senate and would place me in government jobs.! Cause Ripley sure couldn't get them on his own.

Re: How about McCrory for U.S. attorney?

Gosh, the last time I checked you need to be an attorney to be U.S. Attorney

How about McCrory for U.S. attorney?

According to him, he'd be Governor now if not for that black guy!

Re: "You can bet none of them are republicans!"

to be fair and add just a tiny bit of balance to the totally CORRUPTED democrackkk RUINED state of NC?

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

Joe Cheshire?!?!?

Please.

Now Richard Moore, there's a good choice. It might keep him out of the Democratic primary for the Burr Senate seat in 2012.

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

Updated to include Cheshire.

Re: "You can bet none of them are republicans!"

Darn right, FFC1304. There are enough experienced attorneys who are Democrats qualified for the posts. Why on earth would Hagan appoint a Republican?

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

You can bet probably NONE of them are republicans!

Anyone associated with Tony Rand should be declared INeligible!

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

Good judge and prosecutor cannot win an election, even with the backing of the NC Eastern Democratic political machine?

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

Yes, Judge Rand is Tony Rand's son, but he's also a very good judge & was a very good prosecutor -- he's accomplished a lot in his own right.

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

How about state Treas. Richard Moore for the eastern? He is a former assistant U.S. attorney. And sadly, he is out of a job.

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

Hunt Gwynn of Union County

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

hope she doesn't follow strom thurmond's example. he had his son appoointed us attorney less than 5 years out of law school.

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

Oh I see Ripley Rand has received two Easley appointments. After he failed to win re-elect for his first appointed position, Easley appointed him to a second position.

Per Dome's profile on Tony Rand:
"Gov. Mike Easley named Ripley Rand to a roving state Superior Court judgeship last year after Rand lost an election to the Wake Superior Court bench, which Easley had also named him to."

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

Nah, not Hampton Dellinger, not right away. I could see him getting called up to DC to work in a DOJ post there for a few years, THEN come back and get the USA appointment in the CD (maybe in a 2nd Obama term).

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

Reposted to include Dellinger.

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

No, GrayJ. Tony will not be calling in a favor for his son. The machine is far too well oiled for that to be necessary.

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

Craver would be a good pick in the ED, but he apparently enjoys being in the legislature. I'd bet on Ben David -- and then he can get the Gov to appoint his twin brother to replace him.

Colon wouldn't take the CD job (it would be a demotion, really), and Ripley might be a bit young. He might get it, tho.

In the WD, I would bet on some criminal defense atty who raised a ton of money for the campaign.

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

My first reaction was the same about Rand's son. I can't help it but you just have to ask yourself would he at the age of 39 or younger be a Superior Court judge without connections. Same thing with one of Henson Barnes kinfolk becoming a judge several years ago.

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

These are just the names I heard, so there could be some selection bias as I talked to Raleigh-area folks.

Re: Names in the mix for U.S. attorney?

I feel Mr. Rand might be calling in a favor for his son in the near future.

Also this complaint may seem nitpicky but every person you mentioned was either in Raleigh or further east. North Carolina has three federal districts, hopefully the appointed person resides in the territory they would be represent. I guess this just goes to show that eastern North Carolina controls our state political landscape, for reasons unknown to me.
