NAACP condemns Obama casket

The state NAACP says a casket with an anti-Barack Obama sticker was found at an early voting place in Craven County.

In a statement, NAACP head Rev. William J. Barber said that casket was in place "for at least several hours, if not days" at a fire station.

"There is no telling how many voters it rightened away," he said. "It appeared to be an obvious threat to Sen. Obama — a warning to him to stay away from North Carolina."

A bumper sticker on the casket showed a picture of Obama next to the phrase "O' No!"

Barber called on state and national political leaders to condemn the threat as an "attempt at voter intimidation using images of death" and is asking state and federal law enforcement officials to investigate.

Update: "All decent, law-abiding citizens of North Carolina are outraged by this incident," said N.C. Republican Party spokesman Brent Woodcox.

Re: NAACP condemns Obama casket

I condemn the casket too but only for its silliness. I agree with someone who said if a casket stops you on your way to the voting place, you must not have wanted to vote very badly.
The NAACP had a good thing to do when it was formed, they have done it and now that the job is done they need to go on to other things instead of hang around and race bait all the time. It is kind of sad to see people who can't find anything else worthwhile to do and so they hang on to what used to be a successful action way too long.
I can' vote for Obama, he is using the tired old methods of Marx and the boys but McCain is no better. I will be voting my conscious mind tomorrow and making the mark for a third party.

Re: I'm white and I support the NAACP

You're insane, the NAACP has been a rable rousing organization since its inception. It remains in buisness to give a bunch of listless good for nothings a job who still for some reason think it is the 1960's

NAACP head Rev. William J. Barber said:
"There is no telling how many voters it frightened away," he said. "It appeared to be an obvious threat to Sen. Obama — a warning to him to stay away from North Carolina."

You must be kidding? A warning to Obama-stay away from North Carolina? Give me a break.

On the casket, next to the bumper sticker with the phrase O’NO! There is a sign that states: Poor Joe the Plumber Taxed to Death. That obviously is what the casket represented.

If this paper is going to write a story, make sure that it gets the facts straight, or prints all the facts.

As far as people who are trying to make this a race issue, its not. But, any people that go against Obama is by nature racist in the opinion of many supporters. These people can make a can of gas into something racist.

The only people that I see in connection with this race that is racist, is Obama’s pastor Wright. U.S. of KKK.

Re: NAACP condemns Obama casket

"Interesting.. where was the NAACP when an effigy of Sarah Palin was hung with a noose in W.Hollywood????"

You know, this argument, "But the other side did the same thing over in Cally-fornia" ranks right up there with conservative bloggers pointing out an incident in New York City after N&R reporter Joe Killian got kicked to the ground in Elon.

This casket thing happened here in North Carolina, not some other far-off state. We own it, and we need to talk about it, so that incidents like this become a thing of the past and can only be found in the Archives section of the State Library.

As long as people rationalize and refuse to declare that this kind of intimidation is outright wrong, incidents like this will keep on happening, and North Carolina will still be considered a 19th Century anachronism. We want to see progress and prosperity in this state? Then it's time to grow up.

If you understand the Laws (of God) as presented in the scriptures as detailed in the article Election Day Holocaust - The Fate That Awaits You (see http://brotherofyeshua.blogspot.com/2008/10/election-day-holocaust-fate-that-awaits.html ), then the casket can be rightfully seen as a symbol of reality for those who do not believe their actions have consequences.

Re: NAACP condemns Obama casket

why was my post about Nosey African Americans Causing Problems removed. Isn't that the modern day translation of NAACP Their motto/theroy is that they can do to the whites what the whites can not do to them because it is racist.

The NAACP has definitely overstayed their welcome.

I'm white and I support the NAACP

While I don't always agree with the NAACP, unfortunately our society is not yet colorblind and there is still a need for this organization. There is a long history of racial intimidation in this country, especially in the South. Having a casket with anti-Obama stickers at a polling site is akin to having nooses hanging from the nearest tree. It is offensive to everyone. There have been too many death threats against Obama (over 500) for something like this to be considered a joke. This is not an issue of free speech, it is an issue of hate speech. Perhaps some misguided people thought it was funny, in which case they should withdraw the casket and apologize.

Re: NAACP condemns Obama casket

Anyone who thinks the NAACP is a "racist" organization needs to read a history book. Or maybe just start reading books.

I am white and I support the work and the goals of the NAACP.

Re: NAACP condemns Obama casket

Can we just condemn the existence of the racist group NAACP?

Liberty and Freedom of Speech

Obviously, if you can't summon the courage to go to a Public Polling place you're not much of a citizen. I have gone into many dangerous areas/situations in Raleigh, Durham and other fine towns where my presence was not appreciated. Of course, some of us have the convictions of our beliefs.
Freedom and freedom of speech are not "free", It must be defended. While I don't agree with what was done with this casket it is still free speech if it was on private property.
Interesting that the assumption is that this was done by GOP supporters. There are other political parties besides the Democrat Socialist Party and Republicans. Libertarians for example or the "New Party" that Barack Obama sought and got an endorsement of for his Illinois State seat. But why get confused with facts and logic , when we can chant "Yes We Can!"

Free speech does not include voter intimidation at a poll site

I don't agree with hanging effigies of any politician, even Palin, who fosters hatred at her rallies. However, why can't the rightwingers agree that putting a casket with an anti-Obama sticker at a polling place is a form of intimidation of voters - especially black voters. This is reminiscent of hang-mans nooses. I am not black, but the symbolism is very obvious. I'm glad N.C. Republican Party spokesman Brent Woodcox had the decency to condemn this act, but am amazed that the GOP party faithful cannot join him in similarly condemning it.

Freedom of Speech Re: NAACP condemns Obama casket

So much for Freedom of Speech.
One of the many freedoms soon to be eliminated in the coming Spread the Wealth Utopia.

Love the double standard of the NAACP with the effigy of Sarah Palin.
But of course only black people can be discriminated against. But wait, Obama is half white and was mainly raised by his white grandparents when his polygamous African father left him at age 2 and his Hippy white mother was unfit to raise him.

But why look at facts when we can keep chanting "Change We Can Believe In".

Re: Sick

You are so right...they're showing their TRUE COLORS!!!

Sick

Wow. Repugs are depraved in their desperation. The rightwing is desperately trying to cling to power, their knuckles turning white as their fingers attempt to maintain their grasp on our national government. As they feel their grip slipping away, they become increasingly desperate. Rather than yield with dignity, they lash out with attacks, threats, lies, innuendo, insults, and distortions. Although many on the right self-proclaim themselves as "God-fearing Christians," their behavior in this election reveals their true character - pathetic, weak-minded, automatons who lash out like school playground bullies when the teacher comes to take them to the principal's office. These are not the kind of people who should be controlling and running our country. Haven't we had enough of this kind of sick divisive nonsense?

Comment deleted for gratuitious offensiveness, even by the rather generous standards of this forum.

Re: NAACP condemns Obama casket

This CASKET should be used for whomever put it there.

Re: NAACP condemns Obama casket

I did not see ANYWHERE in the story that there was any kind of threat implied or otherwise. ONLY the NAACP would see that and to quote a saying from "Chocolate News" a blatantly racist show on comedy central "It is only racist if you are" So therefore the NAACP must be racist if they see this as racist. I see it as the Repukicans telling the Dummycraps "No Way". The NAACP has obviously overstayed their welcome in society as a whole.

Re: NAACP condemns Obama casket

hehe, johnfx... that was my first thought as well. A little different b/c its at a voting spot. This story would have been more interesting if it was known why it was allowed to sit there for so long. Did the poll workers and firemen just not see it. If so, does that mean it wasnt all that prominent? If it was prominent, why was it allowed to stay? curious...
