N.C. FREE shutting down

N.C. FREE is shutting down.

In a memo to its members today, Bill Brown, the chairman of the board, says that the pro-business research and advocacy group has struggled over the past year.

"Unfortunately, our financial problems are greater than our ability to solve them at this point," he wrote. "On Tuesday, October 28, the Board of Directors voted to cease operation of NCFREE effective October 31, 2008.  This was not an easy decision to make but our only recourse at this point."

The note adds that the group is considering reactivating the N.C. Free Enterprise Foundation to focus on "narrowly focused research and educational activity."

"If they do so, I hope that the members of NCFREE will give serious consideration to lending their support to the Foundation," he writes.

The memo after the jump.

—————

Dear NCFREE Member:

Over the past year NCFREE has encountered a series of internal and financial difficulties.  In recent months, the Officers and Board of Directors of NCFREE have endeavored to return to our core mission, cut unnecessary programs and expenses, and raise the funds needed to continue the work of the organization.  Unfortunately, our financial problems are greater than our ability to solve them at this point.  On Tuesday, October 28, the Board of Directors voted to cease operation of NCFREE effective October 31, 2008.  This was not an easy decision to make but our only recourse at this point.

During its 25 year history, NCFREE has been a valuable asset to North Carolina business leaders by providing accurate and unbiased information on the positions and voting records of candidates and elected officials.  We have worked to foster a politically educated and active business community.  It is our hope that the mission of NCFREE will be continued.

We are honored to have worked in partnership with so many fine leaders and companies to promote a positive climate for business in North Carolina.  Please accept our deepest thanks for your support and involvement through the years.  Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (252-355-6080) or Ron Ottavio (919-828-3733 x102).

Yours Truly,

William S. Brown, Chairman of the Board

P.S. Some years ago, the North Carolina Free Enterprise Foundation was formed.  Although it has been relatively inactive, its directors are contemplating reactivating that Foundation to commence a more narrowly focused research and educational activity on behalf of the business community in the State.  If they do so, I hope that the members of NCFREE will give serious consideration to lending their support to the Foundation.

Re: N.C. FREE shutting down

Sounds like Lew Ebert, the revised NC Chamber (formerly NCCBI) and the board is destroying the business lobbying infrastructure of NC by killing the other players to build himself up.

Was Lew this effective at destrutction to build a single entity in Kansas?

Watch out you little local chambers of commerce! Watch for those on the NC Chamber board - they're coming for you next.

Re: N.C. FREE shutting down

Sounds like they weren't very good businessmen.
