McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

Patrick McHenryU.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry said Barack Obama is only campaigning in "Democrat areas."

On a conference call this afternoon, the Cherryville Republican argued that recent rallies in Charlotte and Greensboro showed the Democratic presidential candidate was not reaching out to conservatives in North Carolina.

"He's made four visits in the last 30 days to North Carolina and not surprisingly he only made stops in Democrat areas," he said. "So much for being on the offensive in North Carolina. He's simply trying to gin up the Democrat base in Democrat counties."

Southeastern regional director Buzz Jacobs said that John McCain's campaign is "very pleased" with the state of the race in North Carolina right now, arguing that "rural conservatives" would not vote for Obama because of his stances on talks with rogue foreign leaders and taxes.

He said McCain is following the "Bush 2004 model," but they are "tweaking it a little bit to improve it."

When asked, campaign staffers on the call said they did not know yet whether McCain or his running mate, Sarah Palin, would visit North Carolina before Election Day.

It was the second conference call by McHenry for the McCain campaign in the general election.

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

Maybe McHenry should spend less time making pointless critiques of Obama's campaign strategy, and spend more time either representing his constituents or worrying about his own re-election campaign.

Daniel Johnson has made the race competitive.

Again, where was Perdue?

What is Perdue hiding from regarding Obama events? Either she doesn't attend an event that has 20,000 democrats & independents or she doesn't get on stage/get picture taken with Obama (I don't believe that Ryan is even giving her credit yet). Perhaps she does not like Obama or maybe Obama doesn't think she is an asset for him (he's no dumby afterall!)? Not exactly building relationships that potential Governors should be making if they are going to have any clout in DC.

FYI re: Mecklenburg County:
- Democrats have 44% of registered voters in Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) compared to 30% for Republicans
- Democrats control both the city council and county commission - blame them instead for Mayor McCrory's pay raise as they were the ones that voted on the city budget as they were the ones that wanted pay raises for themselves
- Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory is a Republican, yet a recent poll suggests he owes his longevity in office to his appeal with moderates and white Democrats - 7 terms in a democratic town, he sounds dangerous to me!
- Charlotte is represented both by Republican Sue Myrick and Democrat Mel Watt as the area is gerrymandered

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

"Isn't the Republican nominee for governor from Charlotte? Isn't Charlotte also represented in the US House by Sue Myrick? How does that qualify as a "Democrat area?""

Sue Myrick represents the conservative suburbs of western Charlotte. The liberal areas of Charlotte are represented by the fringe Democrat Mel Watt. Robin Hayes was also recently saddled with some of the less-than-conservative areas in Charlotte and it's likely the reason he's had a harder time winning re-election.

Trust me, Obama won't be showing up in Myrick's part of Charlotte to campaign; he'll stay uptown and bus them in from the inner city, all areas belonging to Watt. Which proves McHenry's point.

Further, Pat McCrory as Mayor has been something other than conservative on a number of issues, making him popular enough with the moderate-left to ensure all his landslide victories. But suffice to say that the inner city isn't exactly McCrory's biggest stronghold.

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

The comments here show the reason I've grown to like McHenry - he brings out the insane hatred of liberals. If McHenry were involved in all the same "scandals" yet he were a Democrat, I'd bet the house these people wouldn't care a bit - or at least not enough to make such hay out of it. Nope, the hatred of McHenry is due to the fact he's such a strong conservative.

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

Barack Obama fibs about the taxes that he is going to cut for 95% of Americans. You see he is going to let the Bush Tax cuts expire. These tax cuts affect everyone paying taxes. I will pay over $2,000 more in annual taxes when the Bush Tax cuts expire. Also Obama will raise Investment tax rates on everyone from the 31% to a higher number close to 40%. Obama will be raising Social Security taxes on everyone so more people making less than $250,000 a year will pay more. Not to mention the fact that any politician will have to deal with a dominant Democratic Congress that has their own ideas under one of the most liberal speakers of the house we have ever had.

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

It seems that we're missing an important point here. Has scandal-plagued Patrick McHenry become the best spokesperson McCain has left in North Carolina? That has to be an extraordinary comment on the disarray in his campaign.

Cheeseburgers in Azerbaijan......$60.00 or less?

Your reference to Azerbaijan really got me to thinking…..us rural conservatives can think in small amounts for short periods of time…..sometimes.

This from an article in Harpers Magazine, April 25, 2008, reprinted here without permission:

“””One of the stops on the trip included Azerbaijan, where Obama and Lugar met with President Ilham Aliyev. The latter had inherited power from his father two years earlier, won a rigged election, and then crushed protests that erupted in response.

So what topics did Obama raise with Aliyev? Human rights? Political reform? His government’s flagrant corruption and theft of energy revenues? Well, actually the topics he called to Aliyev’s attention were “slightly more parochial,” the Tribune reported:

Why is McDonald’s having difficulty opening restaurants in Baku [the Azeri capital]? And why is Boeing shut out of selling planes to the state-owned airline? “They are two Illinois companies who want to do business and expand,” Obama explained, “but they are having roadblocks.” He didn’t walk away with a concrete answer. He could, however, report back to constituents that he voiced concern at the highest levels of government.””” (end of quote.)

I am not sure why you brought us rural conservatives and Azerbaijanis together but it has been interesting. I guess you are touting Sen. Obama’s vast foreign experience.

And from Obama’s own website:

“””When Obama reached Lenin's tomb, a guide told a story about the bodies buried near the Kremlin wall. Several of the women, according to legend, were his lovers. "I didn't know Lenin was a player," Obama said, cracking a wide smile.””” (end of quote)

I am not sure what constitutes a “player.” It probably has a meaning outside the normal confines of us rural conservatives. Maybe the Russians appreciate Lenin being termed a “player.” And some would definitely think Lenin would approve of Obama. Many say Sen. Obamas proposals are socialist and communist leaning. I guess we will all find out when Sen. Obama becomes the ultimate “playa.” Lenin returned to the Motherland in a sealed train......at least Obama will be elected.

Thanks for the geography lesson. It's been real.

(I'm trying to be a playa.)

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

Is McHenry too stupid to realize that you want to reach as many people as possible with each campaign event? Obama is campaigning in cities because there are people in cities.

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

Mr. Joey has asked: "How many of those rural conservatives can find Iran on a map?"

I am a rural conservative but I cannot give Mr. Joey a definitive answer. I know there is quite a bit of polling going on about the election. I doubt anyone is conducting a poll on his particular question. But I would say that right many could find Iran on a map, especially if it was a world map and not one of the eastern United States like most of us have on the living room wall.

Maybe finding Iran on the map could be like a literacy test to see if we were smart enough to vote for Mr. Obama.

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

"Southeastern regional director Buzz Jacobs said that John McCain's campaign is "very pleased" with the state of the race in North Carolina right now, arguing that "rural conservatives" would not vote for Obama because of his stances on talks with rogue foreign leaders and taxes."

REALLY? "... 'rural conservatives" would not vote for Obama because of his stances on talks with rogue foreign leaders and taxes." How many of those rural voters make enough money to be in the brackets where Senator Obama has proposed to raise taxes? How many of those "rural conservatives" can find Iran on a map? How about Georgia or Azerbaijan? Who does he think he's kidding? He expects those "rural conservatives" to vote for John McCain for the same reason they voted for Jesse Helms 5 times. I grew up on a cattle ranch and have been a registered Republican since Barry Goldwater ran for president; I find that presumption insulting. For the sake of our country's future, I hope he's wrong. - Joey Tranchina

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

No the correct name IS 'Democrat Party'...they became nervous several years ago and started using the hijacked version of 'Democractic Party', which, in fact, is a total misnomer as there is NOTHING 'democratic' about them...STRIVE to be SMARTER than a NC democrackkk! They've RUINED our once great state!

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

I wonder if Obama is telling everyone who is to blame for the current economic mess? Probably not, because he and his Democrat buddies are guilty! Don't blame Bush and McCain, they tried to fix it and were falsely accused of being racists.

Unsure who is to blame for the economic mess? Watch this video and learn the truth --

Oh, by the way, beware the socialists (Obama-ites/Democrats) that are out there lying about everything...notice all they can say is "its not true" and can't back it up. Or resort to ad hominem attacks against the person...so who are the intolerant haters now? Or now, they will bring libel charges against you (maybe arrest?) if they don't agree -- http://www.kmov.com/video/index.html?nvid=285793&shu=1

Obama = Socialism/Communism

Just say "No we aren't!" to Obama 08!

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

There is one part of your post with which I am in agreement.
I believe Obama made an "A" while at Harvard in the course:

"The Trials and Tribulations of the normal average joes, 101."

That would make him an expert in my book.

Re: McHenry: Obama campaigning in Dem areas

(I love how McHenry and people like Limbaugh say "Democrat" using it as an adjective with a snivelling tone; the proper word is "Democratic.") Rural conservatives just won't vote for Obama because he is black. They can couch it in whatever terms, but when has McCain ever stood for the working class folks of America? He was born into privilege, graduated at the bottom of his class, simply had the bad luck of being shot down & captured in Vietnam, and ditched his first wife for a multimillionaire heiress. Meanwhile, Obama understands the trials and tribulations of normal "average joes" as he worked his way up in the world and worked on behalf of the common man. Vote for CHANGE- VOTE for OBAMA & BIDEN!!

Democrat party

U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry said Barack Obama is only campaigning in "Democrat areas."

presumably Dome's wrapping quotes around "Democrat Party" (from the longer McHenry quote) is for this reason
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democrat_party

McHenry correct: Charlotte is a democratic area

Do your homework on Charlotte and the surrounding region before making broad statements:
- Democrats have 44% of registered voters in Mecklenburg County compared to 30% for Republicans
- Democrats control both the city council and county commission - blame them instead for Mayor McCrory's pay raise as they were the ones that voted on the city budget as they were the ones that wanted pay raises

Isn't the Republican nominee for governor from Charlotte? Isn't Charlotte also represented in the US House by Sue Myrick? How does that qualify as a "Democrat area?"

Also, is someone that compares John McCain to the "2004 Bush model" making an argument for McCain or against him? Sounds like the latter to me.
