Under the Dome

McCrory will be sworn in Jan. 5

Republican Pat McCrory will become North Carolina’s 74th governor on Jan. 5 in a low-key ceremony in the old Senate chamber in Raleigh.

McCrory will deliver his inaugural address in a more public forum a week later when other festivities are scheduled.

McCrory wants to get sworn in and his leadership team in place before the legislature opens its new session Jan. 9, according to a statement from his transition statement.

McCrory will deliver his Inaugural speech on Saturday, Jan. 12, on the Capitol grounds.

On Jan. 5, he'll attend a prayer service at Christ Episcopal Church, followed by his swearing-in ceremony at noon. In the days following, he plans to attend to official and inaugural activities around the state, including open houses at the Governor's Western residence in Asheville on Monday,  Jan. 7, and Tryon Palace on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

On Thusday, Jan. 10, he'll attend Rock-the-Ball at Lincoln Theater in Raleigh and on Friday, Jan. 11, the Inaugural Ball at the Raleigh Convention Center. The week of festivities culminates on Saturday, Jan. 12, with a parade in downtown Raleigh, his speech, an open house at the Executive Mansion and a "Governor's Inauguration Celebration" at the mansion that evening.

PAST IS PROLOGUE

THE OLD SENATE chamber was the site of former Governor Jim Martin's official announcement. His choice was graciously approved by Democratic Governor Jim Hunt. The room is relatively small; it would be understandable if attendance is limited to a select audience, including Pat McCrory's family, friends and those who played a major role in his life and campaign.
