Marshall endorsements

Secretary of State Elaine Marshall has picked up the endorsement of two national women's organization's in her bid to win the May Democratic Senate primary.

She has been endorsed by the National Organization for Women and the Women's Campaign Forum, Rob Christensen reports.

"We are excited about Secretary Marshall's campaign for the U.S. Senate," Michele Miller Houck, president of North Carolina Women's Political Caucus said in a statement. "Not only has she broken barriers for women in North Carolina, but she has a track record of leadership in pursuing good government."

The group's national affiliate, the National Women's Political Caucus, is also considering backing Marshall, according to the Marshall campaign. The Marshall campaign is hoping her early endorsements from women's groups will blunt the impact of the fact that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee heavily recruited one of her opponents, former state Sen. Cal Cunningham. Also in the race is Chapel Hill attorney Kenneth Lewis.

Marshall was the first women to win a state-wide executive office in North Carolina when she defeated NASCAR driver Richard Petty for secretary of state in 1996.

She has championed a number of issues important to women including working as an attorney with victims of domestic violence and lobbying insurance companies to cover mammograms and pap smears.

Update: Post clarifies the DSCC's role in the campaign.

Re: Marshall endorsements

Stalin's zombie corpse is also of the endorsingment of the marshall.

Re: Marshall endorsements

Wow. Once again the N&O has to rely on its readers to get the facts straight. And newspapers wonder why they are dying a slow death.

Correct the report

The DSCC has not endorsed anyone - please this report...

Re: Marshall endorsements

Have to agree with southernrock, that's incorrect reporting...I think the best way to put it is:

"It is widely perceived by political observers that Cunningham's campaign is being promoted by the DSCC, but no official endorsement or financial support has yet occurred."

Re: Marshall endorsements

"The Marshall campaign is hoping her early endorsements from women's groups will blunt the impact of the backing of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee of one of her opponents, former state Sen. Cal Cunningham."

If the DSCC already support Cunningham - why have a primary?

Has the DSCC officially endorsed or is this spotty reporting by the Under the Dome staff?
