Mark your calendars for inaugurations

Political types should keep January open.

Newly elected state and federal officials will take office on five different dates, according to a roundup by Clay Barbour of the Charlotte Observer:

Jan. 1: Term begins for Council of State members.

Jan. 6: U.S. senators and representatives are sworn in, including two new faces, Senator-elect Kay Hagan, U.S. Rep.-elect Larry Kissell, both Democrats.

Jan. 10: The state's first female governor, Beverly Perdue, is inaugurated in Raleigh. For more information, check her Web site.

Jan. 20: Barack Obama's inauguration takes place in Washington, D.C. Tickets to the swearing-in ceremony are hard to come by. About 30,000 will be printed, and you must contact your U.S. senator or representative.

Jan. 28: Members of the N.C. House and Senate are sworn in on the first day of the session. Some members choose to be sworn in earlier in their district.
