GOP legislator wants to cut off money for AIDS meds

Rep. Larry Brown, the Kernersville Republican who garnered national condemnation last year after he described gay people as "Fruitloops" and "queers" in an e-mail to other legislators, says one of his priorities for the year will be to eliminate state funding for AIDS and HIV treatments for adults.

In an interview with the Winston-Salem Journal, Brown said taxpayers shouldn't pay to help those with the disease because they "caused it by the way they live."

"I'm not opposed to helping a child born with HIV or something, but I don't condone spending taxpayers' money to help people living in perverted lifestyles," said Brown, a retired letter carrier who ran unopposed in November to win a fourth term.

Recent statistics from the U.S. Centers For Disease Control show that about half of new cases of HIV/AIDS are contracted by people who are not gay, either through heterosexual activity or drug use.

UPDATE: The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization, issued a statement Wednesday calling on Brown to apologize.

“Rep. Brown’s ill-informed comments are not only hateful rhetoric, but they are also extremely dangerous,” said Joe Solmonese, the group's national president. “Hysterical, judgmental and inaccurate statements like Brown’s create an environment that prevents many from getting tested and seeking treatment, thereby furthering the spread of HIV and AIDS. Larry Brown’s conduct reflects poorly on his constituents and other elected officials. The people of North Carolina deserve better.”

————

After his "fruitloops" e-mail became public in October, gay rights activists sent more than 300 empty boxes of Froot Loops breakfast cereal to Brown's office. The boxes were empty, and the bags of cereal sent to local food banks and homeless shelters, so as not to violate state ethics laws concerning gifts. But each has a personal message from a donor affixed to the back.

Representative Larry Brown's foolish Comments on HIV/AIDS...

It is obvious that Representative Larry Brown is a bigot; it's also obvious that his ignorance is an embarrassment to decent people everywhere. My point is that he is also a fool.

Larry Brown represents North Carolina, the Medellín, Columbia of tobacco growing. Tobacco is a vehicle for the drug nicotine. The smoking, chewing and snorting of tobacco is a life-style choice that comes with explicit public health warning labels, which tell the user that the normal use of that product will cause cancer in an extremely elevated percentage of users.   I wonder if this genius feels the same way about the state paying for the treatment of lung cancer or cancer of the mouth or the larynx, or the esophagus or the treatment of smoking-related emphysema or heart disease?

If saving money is Rep. Brown's intention, the state could same a lot of money by ceasing to pay for smoking related diseases.  Of course, that was not his intention. He did not even seriously intend to pass legislation, that would exclude HIV diseases from state funding, because he knows he doesn't have the votes. His sole intention wast to make an outrageous statement to draw attention to himself as a self-righeous, holier-than-thou "Christian" bigot, because he, clearly, believes that sort of behavior has a fan-base in his district.

This is a democracy. The fault is not with the fool, Larry Brown.  The fault lies with the voters of the 73rd District of North Carolina, who have elected this fool four times.

To further add to your post,

To further add to your post, why not disallow medication for community based programs for pyschopaths.  That ougth to make you feel warn and fuzzy.

medical lifestyle choice

people in the medical field have a risk of contacting this dreadful illness due to their lifestyle.so i guess that doctor ,nurse, lab tech who is accidently stuck with a needle is out of luck getting medical assistance.hey after all you choose that life style. some people are like slinkies good for nothing but when pushed down the stairs you do manage to get a laugh .we need to pray for someone this stupid and certainly for   the   people who voted him in office.

AP: Lots of misdirected

AP: Lots of misdirected spite in your reply.  I point out the equivocation on this topic, and you're making mondo assumptions about me?  I honestly thought that, as regards Rep. Brown, you'd simply say "He's a loony" and let it go, rather than jumping on the "Other people on the left/right/center say crazy things too" bandwagon.  Not everything requires a caveat, dude.

Health Plans

Actually the State Insurance Plan does limit you insurance by your lifestyle  smokers, overweight  for example only get get a 70/30 plan  the standard is 80/20.

You see what .....

You see what you want to see AmerWorker.  The last thing I would ever attempt to do is discourage a hard-core liberal from raging about their self-annointed moral superiority.  Between your self-annointed moral superiority and your self-annointed intellectual superiority, I'm just excited to be sharing the same planet with "people like you".

This man has some very extreme views I don't share.  Apparently you share the extreme views of all of your elected officials.

Some of the extreme comments here would lead one to believe the N&O "good taste" censor is asleep at the wheel.  "Anything goes" now I guess.

Like a pretty smart fella once told me...

You folks seems to have a lot to say about this article...and lot of what you're saying makes sense.  I few readers are surprised that the State pays or assists in paying some medical expenses.  This isn't really news.  Through its Human services departments throughout the state, NC pays such things as birth control, STD diagnosis & treatments, TB treatment, administers flu shots, and a host of other health-related resvices. Why, you ask?? It gets down to cause-and-effect...and ultimate costs. Would you prefer that someone with TB or their child not receive treatement...prolly the same co-worker or possibly the child next to your child at school!  Just makes good sense that we ensure that those needing treatments for communicable diseases receive treatment...Good for them, and ultimately Good for us.

Concerning the comments by Rep. Larry Brown.  Like a pretty smart fella once said to me concerning such things, "you can't fix stupid".  Call your next case.

Stupid, Stupid Move

Cutting off access to HIV meds would be the singular most stupid move EVER when it comes to fighting HIV. Aside from the fact that not everyone that has HIV made a "lifestyle choice" that led to HIV (unless being married to someone who cheats without your knowledge and infects you constitutes a lifestyle choice), increasing the number of people who are untreated for AIDS means that there are more uncontrolled infections in the population. Treatment reduces spread. Any half-trained epidemiologist could tell you this.

Cut off access to meds and you increase the number of AIDS cases. That puts us all at risk. Despite the assumptions and moralistic pontification that all of us are subjected to, the bottom line is that more and more women are contracting HIV through their husbands or significant others- without these women doing anything aside from having sex within the confines of marriage. Aside from that, one "mistake" in judgment should not condemn a person, regardless of sex, marital status, or orientation, to a death sentence. Cutting off access to meds is, effectively, a death sentence for far too many people.

Who votes for someone that so smugly puts this kind of proposal out there anyway?

AP: Why not forgo your

AP: Why not forgo your equivocation on this one?  It's pretty clear Rep. Brown *is* out there on this issue, but he's got at least a little company on the right ... And we don't see our left-leaning elected representatives introducing similarly nutty/misinformed legislation on Aids treatment.  Do we?

Plato:  Plenty of fail in

Plato:  Plenty of fail in your reply, but I'll tackle your main question by asking another question: Seriously?!?  You think that the community (i.e. government) doesn't ever pick up the tab on non-Aids related illness?  Come on, man...

name calling

According to the news observer. calling people names like bastard was forbidden. you must have an inside track a lot of my comments disappear.

Lifestyle diseases

About 2/3 of the adults in hospitals are there due to "lifestyle abuse."  Smoking, alcohol and overeating being the big three causes.  Since Rep. Brown wants to cut people with diseases due to their lifestyle, the state could save a ton of money if stopped paying for all of these people.  Show me a homeless gay person with HIV/AIDS and I will show you Jesus Christ.  Mr. Brown answers only to Satan.

Why is it that it's

Why is it that it's conservative republicans who are always the cretins?  This fool reminds me of the GOP legislator from Greenville several years ago who said if a woman was raped, she couldn't get pregnant unless she wanted to.  Then there was the GOP county commissioner in Wake county who said of the intellectually challenged, "everybody knows if you feed the sweet potatoes, it will cure them".  What's with the electorate in NC?  As a collective state, are we that stupid?

He's going somewhere very HOT

He's so profoundly ignorant that he doesn't know that when he dies, he's going somewhere very HOT.

First cut Viagra subsidies

Then if we still need to close a financial gap, move on to the diabetes drugs for those with Type II (generally, acquired).

Viagara!

Viagara for everyone!

Once again, District 73

Once again, District 73 representative Larry Brown has surfaced to embarrass the citizens he represents. Mr. Brown continues to fail in distinguishing the difference between supporting the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman, with the irresponsibility and cold-hearted hatefulness of his divisive positions.

The needs of the State of North Carolina, and the dedicated, hard working men and women that make up the 73rd district, Kernersville, and the surrounding area deserve better than to have their futures dependent upon the unbalanced concepts of this particular individual.

Representative Brown's sadistic ideology aside, his career legislative accomplishments are even less desirable, and have left the area with closed businesses and unfinished projects. His not drawing opposition this past November is in NO WAY an approval of his tenure, any career accomplishments, or his extreme philosophical positions.

After performing and completing a supportive role with "Project Liberty" on behalf of our U.S. Air Force and our military forces serving in Afghanistan, I will be fully opposing Larry Brown as we move forward. North Carolina and the 73rd district deserve a better legislator, and they will have better after November 2012.

Medications for Treatment

Just to reinforce some previous comments, let's not only cut off treatment for lung cancer (it's a lifestyle choice), but also for high cholesterol (for those who eat a lot of beef), high blood pressure (for those who make similar dietary choices), for all types of skin cancer (for those who spent time in the sun--it's a lifestyle choice), for liver cancer (for those who drink), for  . . . . we could continue this list almost infinitely.

Since hospitals can't deny treatment to the sick by law, let's ramp up costs in intensive care units (and compare that with the cost of medications).

In fact, let's stop treating a lot of diseases that result from choices of lifestyle. Then we could help the state budget and also shore up Social Security by promoting earlier mortality. Alas, we won't save anything, in fact we'll spend more (unless we cut off end-of-life care too). The representative's point of view not only lacks simple human charity, it lacks sound economic reasoning as well.

Idiot!!!

Apparently this idiot has no one in his family dying of AIDS contracted through heterosexual sex. If he did, he wouldn't make these vitriolic, assenine comments! You are an embarassment to your district and the State of North Carolina. You need to resign....immediately!!!!

SOB

The good thing about limpdicked bigoted old bastards like this guy is that they usually end up in a picture on the front page of the paper sneaking out of a hotel wearing a leather thong and high heel shoes with his boyfriend Big Stanley blowing him a kiss....but just in case the populace of gay men have better taste than someone who looks like Mr Magoo with gout here's an idea....

A reality show named Big Stanley's Little Ho .... the cameras could follow him as he finds out that his bank account has been drained, leaving him penniless on the same day that he finds out he's been infected with HIV. He's then forced to move into a boarding house whose residents are all HIV positive or have full blown AIDS -- the beginning of each episode could begin with his inability to get assitance with treatment because of the fact that he's a wrinkled up prune who chose to get sick, and then each episode could end with his eating a five gallon bucket of froot loops!

Get rid of Brown

It's too bad Mr. Brown ran unopposed in the last election.  I sure hope someone steps up to run against him on the next election so North Carolina can get rid of this mean, bigoted person.  It is obvious he does not think before he speaks.

Horrific

Public corruption, financial crime and prejudice. North Carolina has it all.

The daily clown...

taxpayers shouldn't pay to help those with the disease because they "caused it by the way they live."
-------
Ok, that will work if we cut off all taxpayer funding for folks who have babies, smoke cigarettes, eat fast food, are fat, live in flood areas, earthquake and hurricane zones, etc. All caused by the way they live

GOP legislator wants to cut off money for AIDS meds

So with this being said, he would rather for those people who are presently infected to either die, or not be healed at all.  It is well known AIDS/HIV is not only pass on to others through gay lifestyles, but by other means as well.

Rep Brown would then be advocating for the lose of funds base on "ones lifestyle," as he so indicated,  due to there use of drugs and heterosexual activities; I take this to mean promiscuous activities as well.

This kind of attitude triggers the minds of hate mongers, like himself, who are most likely to act, or incite irresponsibility that may lead to the taken someone's life just because they are gay. I am all in favor of ones constitutional rights of Freedom of Speech, but where that right ends the other person rights begins, meaning peoples lives should not be put in jeopardy due to words of bigotry.

GOP Healthcare Plan...

Die quickly!

Where have u been under a ROCK?

Can u say RYAN WHITE?  How and why NC is paying for AIDS MEDS is through a federally funded program known as the Ryan White Care Act.  An excerpt below from Wikipedia's info:

"Unlike Medicare or Medicaid, Ryan White programs are "payer of last resort," which fund treatment when no other resources are available. As AIDS has spread, the funding of the program has increased. In 1991, the first year funds were appropriated, around US$ 220 million were spent; by the early 2000s, this number had almost increased 10-fold. The Ryan White Care Act was reauthorized in 1996, 2000 and 2006. The program provides some level of care for around 500,000 people a year and, in 2004, provided funds to 2,567 organizations. The Ryan White programs also fund local and State primary medical care providers, support services, healthcare provider training programs, and provide technical assistance to such organizations."

People CAN contract HIV from ANY type of sexual relations if protective measures are not used.

To verbally blanket all the infected and claim they are all perverts is well, irrational and kinda psychotic.

Oh right, just like so many of our (wink) (wink) leaders.

It is sad to see gays hating

It is sad to see gays hating on gays.  Mr. Brown, come out of the closet.  It is OK, no one cares anymore.

Do you have an example of

You state in your comment that people on the left have Brains and a heart.. Do not know about the heart but believe many times the Brains are missing. if you look at where we were in 1950 until now you should know Braions are questionable

"something from the left as

"something from the left as heartless, brainless, and soulless as this?"

****

Sure oldr .... read/listen to any of the flatulence being spread about the Arizona shootings.  You will never admit it of course but I've no interest in correcting you.  I simply want you to keep raging and screeching like you do.  And I'm certain you will.  :>)

Do you have an example of

Do you have an example of something form the left as heartless, brainless, and soulless as this? I didn't think so.  Please don't try to compare the evil, malignant right with the compassionate, caring left.  I'm still waiting for the right to admit that they're evil and don't give a crap what we think.  I mean, we know it, but please admit it, people.  Your hypocrisy is mind-boggling.

Anti-business, pro-disease

People with HIV usually die from other infectious diseases which are communicable to the community at large. By withholding AIDS drugs, Brown supports the spread of TB and other infectious diseases in NC.

GlaxoSmithKline is one of the biggest employers in the state, and a major manufacturer of antiretrovirals. Brown wants to hurt their sales. He is opposed to NC business.

Publically supported hospitals are required by state law to treat all patients regardless of ability to pay. Brown cannot oppose HIV treatment without removing that requirement. He wants NC hospitals to turn away sick people in the name of family values.

Froot Loops is a delicious cereal that should not be drug into this debate.

This resolution will of

This resolution will of course be shot down by legislators with hearts and brains, but it does serve the purpose of inciting even more disdain and revulsion for the right and helps to further expose their soullessness to centrists still in doubt.

awful

and the GOP wonders why they have a bad reputaion. this guy will be the poster child for the political opposition. vote libertarian!!

here we go ....

One individual with an extreme point-of-view who will be paraded about as representing "all of'em".  A gross generalization we can count on the N&O to incite as much as possible.

Similarly extreme POVs from the other ideological extreme never quite get the same size fonts and placement.  Oh well .... its 2011 and the way it is.

why is the state paying for individuals health care?

I have insurance and I pay my medical bills.

I was unaware the state was suppose to be covering my medical expenses. Why are they paying for anyones care? That is not the states job. What exactly is this state funded free care ??? Maybe this is why NC has the highest tax rate in the south? And toll roads and a lottery..so our govt instead of cutting spending just seems to spend more and find new ways to steal from its residents and waste more money.

Ummmm, Errrrr, why are we paying for aids medicine?

What makes this disease so special that we pay for aids meds and not for cancer meds or cardiovascular disease meds, or pick any of the other hundreds of dread disease meds?  Why do we pay for aids meds and not any of the others?

Surprised?

Who here is surprised that goppers would advocate something like this?

And, who here is surprised at the level of hypocrasy?

Ugly people who do ugly things.

Unopposed?

Can you believe that he ran unopposed in the 2010 election?

How about lung cancer, alcoholism, etc?

I bet he won't want to eliminate funding for other diseases "caused...by the way they live."

What about help for those with COPD, lung cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, and other diseases that are lifestyle-related?  Using his logic, there would be no help for someone who was injured in an auto accident or a hunting accident ("caused it by the way they live.").

Fortunately, his ideas won't see the light of day.  Reporting this could be the publicity that this person desires.  Don't stoke his fire any more!

Who is voting for this person?

I do not understand a constituency that can take the time and effort to go to the polls and elect this kind of person. Is this state that populated with illiterate and incompetent voting populations?

AIDS and HIV treatments

Will the NC GOP eliminate state funding for adults with lung cancer from smoking? Brown said taxpayers shouldn't pay to help those with the disease because they "caused it by the way they live."?????

Get real people, we will never cure any disease with this attitude toward each other.
