Under the Dome

In new campaign ad, George Holding shares a fireside chat

Republican George Holding is a clear favorite for the 13th Congressional District. So instead of telling his story in a new radio ad, Holding spends a minute telling Thomas Edison's story.

The tie in for Holding's FDR-styled fireside chat: "America was built was by people like Thomas Edison. And that spirit -- not the government -- will rebuild our economy."

(Holding is sitting on a load of campaign cash, so expect more chats.)

Holding, a former U.S. attorney, faces Democrat Charles Malone in November. Malone issued a press release Thursday criticizing his opponent for recent remarks to the Rocky Mount newspaper about the election being a choice between "unlimited opportunities and possibilities or a country with unlimited handouts without regard for cost.”

“It is easy to make simplistic statements about opportunity and possibility when one grows up surrounded by wealth," Malone said. "Not every American can rely on personal wealth to cover medical bills, college tuition, etc. Mr. Holding can. We don’t begrudge his family’s success, but question whether someone with a viewpoint that assumes those receiving government assistance are asking for unlimited handouts is out of touch with a large majority of the 13th District?”

You know what's wrong with this commercial: George Holding

By the end of this commercial about Edison, I focused on the voice of George Holding.  What I heard was a smug, self-assured, ignoramus.  The man is a moral imbecile.  Voters should shun him at the polls - shun him like the plague.

Holding the wrong light bulb

Newsflash for George Holding: Thomas Edison did not invent electric light.  Credit for that goes to British inventor Joseph Swan who held a patent before Edison, though numerous others invented incandescent lamps before them.  Edison did make great advances creating an efficient filament, long lasting bulbs and a system of electricity to support them.  Swan successfully sued Edison in Britain and the pair ultimately formed a partnership. As Isaac Newton wrote to Robert Hooke: "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants".
