Ignore the sniping, Democratic convention is good for NC, says strategist

Democratic strategist Gary Pearce says the media is missing the point with all their stories about potential problems with the Democratic convention in Charlotte. He says no one is going to cast their ballot for president based on the convention.

“Here is the real significance: A Democratic candidate for President – an African-American, no less – is holding his renomination convention in the South and in North Carolina,” Pearce writes in his blog, Talking About Politics. “He is playing in the Republican end of the field. He is making a statement – a statement that was unimaginable 50, 20 or even five years ago.'"

“That's how much politics has changed in North Carolina and the nation,” Pearce writes. “That's why Charlotte is a plus for Democrats.'' For more read here.

The Claude Sitton Tradition

Back in the '70s they used to say that if anybody tried to intimidate with any N&O reporters, Editor Claude Sitton might just show up at the doorstep wanting to know what all the insults were about. Newspapers should be more strict in prohibiting personal online aspersions against the integrity of their own reporting staffs.

Today's online editors will just about let any derisive personal affront stay on the screen because they are so fearful of offending any online readers. But the press could stand a little dose of the Claude Sitton editorial tradition: all personal insults and aspersions against reporters or even newsmakers should be off-limits as online posts should at least come close to the normal standards for acceptance of a latter-to-the-editor for publication in print edition.

These online debaucheries have truly detracted from the appeal of online journalism. There should be online reader comment standards so that people will be encouraged to stick to the issues rather than hurl their personal insults toward the professionals who are hired and paid by the newspaper to go out and report on the news.

And the Duke Merger For Dessert

And the icing on the cake is the onerous Duke Energy-Progress Energy "merger," served up in a Queen City that just can't say no to hometown corporations.

Will McClatchy be sponsoring any of those fancy soirees?
