House Majority leader targeted by state employees group

The state employees association has begun a $50,000 radio ad campaign against Democratic Majority Hugh Holliman of Lexington.

The group's political committee has been targeting Holliman, blaming him for mismanagement for the state employee health care plan. The group ran issue ads against him last year.

With Holliman locked in tough re-election campaign with Republican Rayne Brown, the political committee of the State Employees Association of North Carolina could have an impact.

“He helped craft and pass a budget that slashed tens of millions of dollars from mental health care funding,” says the announcer in the ad. “A bad cut. Now the state is forced to to put violent mental health patients in rest homes with seniors. And that bad cut has had violent and in some cases deadly results. As majority leader Hugh Holliman should have known better.”

Kevin LeCount, SEANC's political director, said the group may spend  more than than the initial $50,000 buy. So far, the Holliman campaign is the only one that SEANC is involved in.
