Almost 40 percent of early voters were black.
According to information posted by the State Board of Elections and analyzed here, 39.9 percent of the 495,828 North Carolinians casting ballots at one-stop sites this year were African-American.
At the same time, slightly more than 60 percent were women.
Both figures may not hold through the end of the day, however. It's possible that black and female voters who turned out early would have voted on Election Day regardless.
The question remains how many voters turned out who otherwise would not have voted. With lines at polling places steady, but not overwhelming so far, turnout may not be as high as predicted.

Re: High percentages of blacks, women vote
May 6, 2008 - 5:39pm — cavecreekerWhile your newspaper's editorial summary of the State Board of Elections statistics are careful not to tell Black women outright to vote for Obama, you sure are straddling the line of suggestion. Think your readers can't read between the lines?
I'll be blunt because I am writing an editorial comment in my little designated editorial comment box:
Vote for Hillary. She has more experience in helping the middle class, the working class, the poor, women, all racial groups, et al. Our economy and our families cannot afford to fail now. Hillary is more than electible. She will send the Neocons back to hell where they came from.
North Carolina women get out and vote and take a neighbor or two with you.

May 6, 2008 - 4:48pm — karegiI don't think that African American voters will vote as exclusively for Obama as they did in previous primaries. I think that Clinton will get as high as 25% of the African American vote, particularly that of African American women. People don't have to be white to be shocked at Wright's comments. Obama's long-term presence at that pastor's church does create doubts.
