Hagan asks Holder to review new NC voter law

Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan Tuesday sent a letter to U..S. Attorney General Eric Holder urging him to review the voting bill signed into law by Republican Gov Pat McCrory.

"I am deeply concerned that H.S. 589 will restrict the ability of minorities, seniors, students and disabled and low and middle incomes citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote," Hagan wrote. "I strongly encourage the Justice Department to immediately review House Bill 589 and take all appropriate steps to protect federal civil rights and the fundamental right to vote.''

She said called the law one of the most restrictive in the country, requiring not only a photo ID to vote, but reducing early voting by a week, eliminating pre-registration of high schoolers, ending same-day registration, restricting the ability to vote by provisional ballot.

Shezanne Cassim, the American jailed in the United Arab Emirates after posting a video parody, was sentenced Monday to one year in prison and a fine of 10,000 UAE dirhams (approximately $2,700).
The young American living in the UAE has been imprisoned since April, his family says, for posting what was intended to be a funny video on the Internet.
He was accused of defaming the UAE's image abroad, according to The National, the country's main English-language newspaper.
The video in question is a 19-minute short that pokes fun at a clique of Dubai teens who are influenced by hip-hop culture. In the 1990s, the label "Satwa G" was coined for a group of suburban teens who were known to talk tougher than they really were.
The video depicts a look at a "combat school" in the suburb of Satwa, where these "gangsters" are trained. The training includes how to throw sandals at targets, using clothing accessories as whips, and how to call on the phone for backup.Cassim's family says the 29-year-old has been charged with endangering national security. The charges were not read out in court. UAE officials would only say "Mr. Cassim was charged under the UAE's penal code. Anyone charged with a crime under the laws of the UAE is entitled to the fair trial protections contained in the UAE's constitution."
Cassim, from Woodbury, Minnesota, moved to Dubai in 2006 after graduating from college to work for PricewaterhouseCoopers.
He and some friends made and posted the video online in 2012. He was arrested in April. He was interrogated and arrested in Dubai before being transferred to a maximum security prison in Abu Dhabi. His family says it was five months before he was notified of the charges against him.

And the link you presented is broken, according to my browser, however, this is a POLL, and poll's are not a representation of every voter in the state, its a subsection, usually between 100 to 1000 people, and your answers to that poll are going to be bias depending on who, and where you conduct such poll.

The only people who would not be able to come up with an ID in the next three years are those who are unable to obtain such identification because they may not be entitled to be here. This law ensures the integrity of the vote, you have to present ID for a lot of other things that you do in this state, and in this nation, whats the problem with having to present one to vote?

re: Kay Represents

That is the best explaination that I have seen of her bizarre positions on the issues.

Thank You Kay Hagan

To the commenters who say Hagan doesn't share the views of the majority of NC on this issue, perhaps you didn't see the PPP poll report titled "North Carolinians Oppose Voter Bill."

This law is so extreme and so out of touch! It's good to know we have someone standing up for North Carolina.

The people who don't represent the citizens of North Carolina are the extremist Republicans in the state legislature. North Carolina Democrats represent the moderates and the middle class in our state.

That couldn't be made anymore clear by watching the reality of what happens when North Carolina Republicans control our state's government.

Kay represents

I think Kay represents Chuck Schumer first and somewhere after that the extreme liberal element of North Carolina.

Hagan must go

Hagan has consistently failed to fight for policies that support our nation's job creators and economic engines and today, we're realizing the consequences in the form of lower personal incomes, sky-high foreclosure rates and millions of North Carolina's out of work. And while Hagan may claim she stands with our state's seniors, much like the rest of her short career in Washington, her record simply doesn't support her rhetoric. With our state and our nation facing extraordinary times, it's no surprise that NC Citizens are seeking new direction in Washington.

Who does Hagan represent?

Who does Hagan represent?

Certainly not the 2/3 of the NC citizens that support the law.

Maybe she is required to march in lock step with her fellow travelers?
