Did you have any trouble voting today?
The elections watchdogs at Democracy North Carolina can offer some help. They have set up a Web site to answer questions about elections laws, your rights and your ballot.
They are also working with the national Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law to provide a toll-free hotline for voters who have problems.
The Election Protection hotline is 866-OUR-VOTE.
Remember that you can always cast a provisional ballot if there is a question about your voter registration, your polling place or other issues.
The local Board of Elections will then determine whether or not to count your ballot.

I was joking. I've been giving the N&O guys a hard time because they continue to present the "gas tax holiday" issue as a he-said/she-said issue, with both sides having equally valid arguments. However, some basic economics tells us that advocates for the "gas tax holiday" are clearly overselling the likely benefits. With gas companies operating at 100% capacity, they are unable to increase supply. As such, a removal of the gas tax will leave prices unchanged. This is perfectly clear and uncontroversial, and has been clearly explained in the Washington Post, but for some reason the N&O guys refuse to explain the issue to their readers. It's pathetic.

May 6, 2008 - 9:56am — dharmaI don't see any good coming from this "gas tax holiday". For a few dollars to us, it will rob the US treasury. That money is for highway repair and construction (bridges, too). So, for you to save $30.00, you'll be putting highway owrkers out of jobs and jeopardize highway safety. Remember the bridge collapse in Minneapolis?
Besides, let's say you're voting for Hillary, do you really think she could make it happen THIS SUMMER? Keep in mind that Bush is still president this summer. Also, many senators have said there's no way in hell they would ever allow that to pass. It's just pandering to the less informed voter.
Re: Have trouble voting?
May 6, 2008 - 9:49am — dahedgehogI had trouble voting because I can't tell if the "gas tax holiday" is a good idea or not. Can anyone help me out? I've scoured the N&O, but can't find an answer!
Re: Have trouble voting?
May 6, 2008 - 9:48am — dharmaMy 18 year-old daughter and I arrived at 6:30 a.m. to vote today. Upon arrival, we found that neither she, my spouse or my husband were listed on the rolls. This is beyond abnormal since my spouse and I have been registered to vote in Granville County for many years.
Since my daughter registered at the DMV in March, I went to the BoE webpage yesterday to make sure she was registered. She was not but I thought we could clear it up at our precinct this morning (or she could vote on a provisional ballot). However, while on that webpage I confirmed that my husband and I are both REGISTERED to vote in Granville County.
While at the precinct (Wilton Elementary School), I noticed that there were several people in the A-H line who also had the same problem. They were all registered voters yet were excluded from the rolls. It was also peculiar that the book with the voters names was more than half the size it was in 2004 - even though there has been a great deal of growth in this area and no precincts have been added.
They either royally screwed up in Granville County or this is voter fraud. I emailed Ms. Burnette at the Granville County BoE but have yet to receive a response. I would like an explanation.
