Hagan vows to help veterans

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan promised today to be attentive to the needs of military veterans, saying she would work for a “world class” health care system.

With former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia at her side, Hagan said she would work to reduce the backlog of veterans claims, work to reduce the number of homeless veterans and make sure that vets have job opportunities, reports Rob Christensen.

Hagan did not criticize her opponent, Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole.

Cleland, a severely wounded Vietnam vet, took an apparent swipe at U.S. Sen. Richard Burr.

"It angered me that your current senator voted against the GI Bill,” Cleland told about 50 people at the state VFW headquarters in Raleigh. “To vote against it is unbelievable.”

President Bush signed a bill in July providing $63 billion over 10 years for increased college aid to service members who served after 9/11. Some Republicans said the bill was so generous it would hurt the military’s ability to retain military members, and backed a less expensive version.

Dole will campaign at a VFW Post in Cary later today with her husband, former Sen. Bob Dole, a wounded World War II veteran.

Correction: An earlier version of the post indicated that Cleland criticized Dole for voting against the GI bill. Dole voted for the bill. Burr initially voted against the bill, but then voted for it on final passage.

Can Hagan accomplish what Dole did for Fort Bragg...

Re: Hagan vows to help veterans

Every Democrat in the General Assembly who did not stand up to decentralizing the mental healthcare system bears a part responsibility in the deaths and loss of federal benefits. But they cannot babysit the situation and I understand they are just part time members. The way to help put us back on the right path is by firing Benton. Why? Do you ask? Because he is the person in charge and has direct management and oversight of the system.

Where has our Healthcare leader been the last eight years? This fiasco did not happen overnight. Perdue cannot be trusted as Governor. Period.

And Hagan has shown that she HAS to spend every dime she gets her hands on and has shown she will and can grab billions in pork that all politicians keep saying is bad.

Re: Hagan vows to help veterans

How ANYONE can vote for even a single democrackkk in NC is beyond comprehension, after what they've done to our ONCE great state! Completely CONTROLLED by single party criminals.

I and a fourth generation veteran who served for nine years

and I support Perdue and Hagan. Does that extra generation of service make me more credible than a third generation veteran? It truly must.

Re: Hagan vows to help veterans

Ryan,

Over 200 at my conservative estimate and maybe over 300 attended the VFW Post in Cary called Veterans for Dole/McCain. Glad to see you caught a Democratic surrogate in a lie. Tell Cleland to go back to Georgia and keep his lies there. I am a 3rd generation veteran who fully supports McCrory, Dole, and McCain/Palin. Please do not forget Pittenger for Lt. Governor who will know what the jobs entails unlike Perdue.
