Kay Hagan slightly edged U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole in a recent poll.
According to a survey by Rasmussen Reports, the Democratic Senate nominee is essentially tied with the Republican incumbent. Hagan had 48 percent; Dole, 47 percent. Two percent supported someone else and 3 percent were not sure.
"Any incumbent who polls below 50% early in the campaign cycle is considered potentially vulnerable," the pollsters note.
Both candidates are popular by roughly the same margin, with 56 percent having a favorable opinion of Dole and 53 percent having a favorable opinion of Hagan.
The phone poll of 500 likely voters was conducted on May 8. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
