Hagan submits names for judges

U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan has submitted recommendations for two federal judgeships in North Carolina.

Hagan, a Greensboro Democrat, has submitted three names to President Barack Obama to be a U.S. District Court judge in the Eastern District and three names to considered for a judgeship in the Middle District.

Hagan's nominees for the Eastern District are: Allen Cobb, senior resident Superior Court Judge for New Hanover and Pender counties; Jennifer May-Parker, assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District handing criminal appellate cases; and Quentin Sumner, senior resident Superior Court Judge in Nash County.

Hagan's nominees for the Middle District are: Catherine Eagles, senior resident Superior Court Judge in Guilford County; Anita Earls, executive director for the Southern Coalition for Social Justice in Durham; and Edwin Wilson, senior resident Superior Court Judge in Rockingham County.

Re: Hagan submits names for judges

Attended a party on Friday night where the subject of Ms. Earles' advocacy came up. How can someone who is the creator and ED of a group that litigates against the SBOE serve on the SBOE itself without that being a conflict of interest?

Furthermore it seems to be a well-kept secret that Ms. Earles is also on the Board of Directors of FairVoteNC. This is s franchise of the national FairVote group that advocates for Instant Runoff Voting as the means to the end of Proportional Representation. They provided a "scholarship" for the SBOE assistant Director to visit Scotland in 2007 to "study" IRV, even though this person was not seen doing anything related to the IRV pilot in 2007. So will Earles advocate for more scholarships for SBOE employees to push a particular agenda for FairVoteNC, and possibly get her other group to sue the SBOE if they don't follow through?

I say if she wants to be on the SBOE - she needs to drop both her other gigs. She would certainly have to do so if she was a judge on the Federal bench.

Re: Hagan submits names for judges

Anita Earles has a big following. As the creator and executive director of the non-profit SOUTHERN COALITION FOR JUSTICE she has just be appointed to the NC State Board of Elections and now she's up for a federal judgeship. Ms. Earles is an advocate for minorities, immigrants and has a working relationship with ACORN groups. While her advocacy is fine - as a SBOE member or as a Judge she must work for all people and apply the law for all people. Can someone who is an advocate do this?
