U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan was among a dozen Democratic senators who spent last weekend in Miami Beach raising money from lobbyists for oil, drug and other corporate interests.
Hagan was one of the attendees at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee's winter retreat at the Ritz Carlton South Beach Resort, according to an invitation to the event obtained by Politico's Ben Smith. The event's program listed a couple receptions and large blocks set aside for "informal conversations with Senators."
As Smith notes, the Senators were meeting with an interesting group.
Across the table was a who's who of 108 senior Washington lobbyists,
including the top lobbying officials for many of the industries
Democrats regularly attack: Represented were the American Bankers
Association, the tobaco company Altria, the oil company Marathon,
several drug manufacturers, the defense contractor Lockheed, and most
of the large independent lobbying firms: Ogilvy, BGR, Quinn Gillespie,
Heather Podesta, and Tony Podesta.
To be fair, Republicans are also planning a similar Florida retreat in the spring where contributors can play golf, go fishing or mingle with Republican senators.

we have term limits now - the law is on the books now - sorta
February 4, 2010 - 12:59pm — tomyknowledgeWe have term limits now.
Some people call them elections but they are term limits if the voters so desire. However, once elected the officeholder is just about glued to his/her seat. The lobbyists bankroll them to stay in office and be a "friend" to whatever group the lobbyist may represent.
It takes so much money to unseat an incumbent. Money buys media coverage and money can make an incumbent deadbeat look like a modern day hero. Many good candidates shy away from entering the race knowing that the incumbent can out muscle them with advertising.
Maybe the mood of the country this year will be term limiting. I hope so. I hope we get to throw the bums out. And hopefully we will not have to throw out the bums we elect this go round.
It is amazing how close "incumbent" is to "encumbrance." Hard to think of one without the other.
Term Limits
February 4, 2010 - 11:40am — mmclendonWell said. Thank you!
Term limits are critical. There is no partisan disagreement on this matter.
Wake Up North Carolina
February 4, 2010 - 10:46am — edward4canesBestsarah -
The voters of North Carolina, hopefully, will stop the Cal train. I see a tough primary a head of Cal Cunningham, considering he has not developed a campaign platform and his stump speeches are nothing short of attacks on Richard Burr. I, for one, am tired of the pure partisan bickering and gridlock in Washington DC, thus why would I want someone that is bought and paid for by Washington.
Martha Coakley was the DSCC supported candidate and I am sure that Democrats in MA and in DC thought that their was nothing blocking her way. Enter the voters and we know how that story ended.
It is clear by your post and the following comment that you are a die hard liberal with the mentality that big government knows best over the state and local governments.
I find your comment extremely misguided and challenge you to provide evidence that Washington knows better...
My evidence that Washington does not know better...
Example 1 - Education - No Child Left Behind (a Bush policy) damaged our education system immensely.
Example 2 - NAFTA - (a Clinton policy) failed North Carolina and sent thousands of manufacturing jobs overseas to which this state has never been able to fully recover.
A general comprehension of the concept of "federalism" and the 10th Amendment are dense and challenging, but your notion that Washington knows best is in direct conflict with the mentality of the Founders.
The Cal Train is steaming
February 4, 2010 - 10:23am — bestsarahAnd who can stop the Cal Train? I don't see much blocking his way. The DSCC knows what they are doing. They have our best interests at heart and sometimes it is best to acknowledge that DC often has better ideas. Jump on the train before it leaves the station.
DSCC bought and paid for...
February 3, 2010 - 2:03pm — edward4canesSenator Hagan was elected into the office of U.S. Senator representing North Carolina as an agent of change. She enjoyed the coattails of President Obama in North Carolina and a general sentiment that Elizabeth Dole was nothing short of a Washington DC insider that was out of touch with North Carolina.
Senator Hagan received generous support from Chuck Schumer and the DSCC. From airing ads to paying for the Get-Out-The-Vote efforts, Senator Hagan was given almost $10 million dollars worth of resources.
Ironically, Senator Hagan campaigned on change and touted her outsider status to help usher in this change that America was desperately looking for.
This quote is taken directly from her campaign website.
Yet now she is playing the same games she told us that she was against. I guess it takes a lot to repay the DSCC for an election victory. So much for her campaign promises. I hope we all learn from our mistakes in sending Senator Hagan to Washington as she continues to break her promises. Let's avoid making the same mistake - do not let Cal Cunningham win the Democratic primary - he is more of the same - forget about the people who sent you to DC.

Career politicians breed
February 3, 2010 - 6:10am — KingixolibCareer politicians breed corruption and lies. VOTE them out or they and their cronies either die in or retire from public office.
Term limits are in the hands of the voters not the career politicians. They will never vote to limit terms.......just see how well ethics is being legislated by the career politicians.
The Lobbyist Issue & many others are VERY easily resolved.
February 3, 2010 - 2:33am — SeaOwl1) Immediately double the salaries of everyone in the congress & the senate
2) Congress & Senate members get 3 weeks paid vacation a year....period. All other time off is docked from their pay on an hourly basis.
3) Simultaneously implement the immediate dismissal with no benefits and no retirement + 2 years in prison for anyone accepting so much as a free drink or cup of coffee from anyone for any reason.
4) One 4 term limit for everyone in all branches of government with no possibility of EVER returning to the same office again under any circumstance.
5) All bills and all legislation will deal with ONLY ONE ISSUE. Everything and anything will be debated and voted upon as an individual issue no matter how insignificant it may appear to be.
No more packing $2 million to study Zebra stripes on to a military funding bill. Let the idiot introduce the Zebra Stripe Study as an individual bill to be debated and voted upon if anyone is STUPID ENOUGH to even listen.
The end result is a well paying job that will happen only once in any persons lifetime. Those elected to office cannot be bribed (no incentive for it) and can only work for the "people" for their one time 4 years in office. There will be NO elected officials sucking as much money as they can out of the Treasury for their constituents for 25+ years.
People like Murtha should be in prison by now.
They all need to go in 2010
February 3, 2010 - 12:09am — martzr1They all need to go in 2010 & 2012. Vote in term limits and let's get this show on the road before there are no more shows.
absolutely disgusting
February 2, 2010 - 11:03pm — ishleythe Palm Beach junket kind of sounds like Ruffin's bachelor party. Here's to term limits.
term limits
February 2, 2010 - 10:20pm — marcedward1Even after the 1994 elections I wasn't for Term Limits, but after this many years of a "tweedledee/tweedledum" selection maybe I'd be willing to have term limits for a century to see how it works out.
wammarc... couldn't be more right
February 2, 2010 - 10:12pm — paulvailI'm so tired of both parties. Time for them all to go. 2 terms and you are done. Go do something else. Do not pass Go, do not collect lobbyist money. Shame on them all.
Disgusting as vomit
February 2, 2010 - 9:58pm — penniless_taxpayerHere we find Kay Hagan relaxing in Miami Beach after a tough week of raising the national debt ceiling $2 TRILLION, consorting with some of the same lobbyist that she was vilifying during the health care takeover attempt. This woman is as disgusting as a pool of vomit.
Funny you should say that
February 2, 2010 - 8:45pm — NotLiberalFunny you should say that marce.
Because I did vote for Hagan and she has yet to give me a response to any of my questions about health care I posed to her.
But hey like the old saying goes, "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me."
I won't be fool twice.
COPORATE LOBBYIST
February 2, 2010 - 7:44pm — beachbum3In my personal they every last one that attended this lobbyist sponserewd weekend of meet an greet should in my estimation be arrested for prostution they only difference is in the wares that they were selling to the highest bidders . I have recently hearded that health care reform is dead on arrival an i guess these meeting just goes to prove it so what else is new the taxpayers are getting screwed again an i personally feel slightest as that i have even been kissed before the screwing took place . you go kay an you will fall in2012 just as good old BEV for she is going to go down as well to be a one termer. this coming from a loyal democrat i might not vote in 2012 an if i do it surely will not be for kay or any other republican excuse me kay i though you were a republican based on your voteing record with the republicans a big coporate businessess in this state you could pass of senator burr. thank you
public financing
February 2, 2010 - 6:49pm — marcedward1If we would get ALL money out of politics than none of our congressmen/Senators would have to meet with lobbyists at all.
I hope Ms. Hagan has a nice time in Miami!
@fiestamom
February 2, 2010 - 6:47pm — marcedward1Ma'am, Senator Hagan was very good at answering all my concerns around health care. See, she has an email, and her staff answers questions.
Why would she want to meet with the tea-party folks? They were the ones who LOST the last elections. They represent people who would never vote for a Democrat. See, when YOU LOSE an election, you don't get to say what the government does. Maybe your side ought to come up with some policies or something other than "we hate Obama". You can't beat something with nothing.
Lock and Liddy
February 2, 2010 - 5:45pm — watchtowerLock Faircloth didn't want to be in Washington any longer so he made it easy for Johnny Edwards. Liddy Dole had had enough so she made it impossible to vote for her. Enjoy the next 5 years Kay, build up you offshore accounts as much as you can so you never have to work again because you are another short term replacement for someone with a brain.
Different view
February 2, 2010 - 5:28pm — tomyknowledgeRemember in the Frankenstein movie when the villagers storm the castle?
That's what would have happened if this story was about Burr. As it was Hagan it should not have been reported because it is not news. If you have a hard time understanding the difference you probably work for a living and were born on this planet.

February 2, 2010 - 5:02pm — PhantomLordgtrain,
Had this story been about Burr I have a feeling your post would have an entirely different content.
Not news
February 2, 2010 - 4:46pm — gtrain82I realize this doesn't look good, but why make a story out of something that all politicians have done forever? She also breathed. Jeez. Besides, after the recent supreme court ruling I think they are considered constituents.
Dome gets story wrong
February 2, 2010 - 4:50pm — tomyknowledgeYes, Dome must have this story wrong. The Democrats are as pure as the driven snow and only take money from little old ladies and then the donations are usually under $5.00 each. Please check your sources. This is probably some type of teabagger scam getting you to print something wrong.
How about candidates? Did the DSCC invite any candidates to meet with the money folk?
Money can't buy love.........but it can make a politician love you long time......or if the money runs out a short time.
She held NO Town Halls
February 2, 2010 - 4:37pm — fiestamomKay Hagan refused to meet with the rabble, I mean her constituents once this year.
Her staff refused to give out any info on public meetings, her staff always refers the plebeian citizens to "her website" to find out when the next town hall is. Curiously, that info is never made public.
Holy mackerel, she even met with the evil tobacco lobbyists, and lobbyists from the banks? I'm shocked and stunned.
Impossible! I thought it
February 2, 2010 - 3:50pm — PhantomLordImpossible! I thought it was the evil republicans who were owned by and beholden to corporate interest and the worst of the worst, lobbyists!
Say it ain't so!
John Edwards Redux
February 2, 2010 - 3:39pm — mokocopeSeems like just yesterday that NC voters turned Lauch Faircloth out of office and installed John Edwards. Here we go again, Hagan is a dud of the first order. She'll make a fine bootblack for President Obama though.
Kay Hagen and the lobbyists
