Hagan: Discrimination still exists

Sen. Kay Hagan said that women have made progress, but not enough.

Speaking at a pro-choice women's luncheon in Washington Sunday, the Greensboro Democrat noted that she was taking the seat of former Sen. Jesse Helms, drawing brief boos from the audience.

She related that in 1999 Helms kicked now-Speaker Nancy Pelosi and nine other Congresswomen out of a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee after they tried to present him with a petition to sign an international treaty against the discrimination of women.

"That's whose seat I am taking," she said. "Looking around this room today, I know that you would agree that a lot has changed in this country and a lot has changed in the great state of North Carolina."

Speaking at an event sponsored by EMILY's List, Hagan repeated her support for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which would extend the time period for filing a discrimination claim. It is the first bill Hagan has cosponsored and was the subject of her first speech in the Senate.

She also noted a smaller, but still irritating, act of discrimination.

"Imagine my surprise when I tried to use the Senate members' gym recently and found out that there is a pool, but — guess what — it's only for the men," she said.

HAHA...post of the day right there...

And the Obligatory Kennedy joke of the day from Republicans happens to be:

I am sure the reason the Senate pool is for men only is so that when Teddy Kennedy is in the pool there won't be any "accidents" with the female members of the Senate.

Precious.

The Republican nominated "quote of the day" folks, is Kennedy is finally dead.

Maybe you guys can get a two-for-Tuesday if Byrd dies too. WOOHOO!

Re: Hagan: Discrimination still exists

I did not want to get into Dole-bashing as a response, but if the men would not listen to her then maybe she should have spoken up more in the committee meetings. I like Dole, but I don't think that she prepared herself for these meetings and therefore had nothing to say. I go to town hall meetings and know the type. They just pick up the packet and skim through it ten minutes before the meeting. I don't think Hagan will be this way. She may not vote the way I like all the time, but she already seems much more engaged in her work than Dole was. The reason the Democrats got more money this time is because K Street hedged their bets toward the likely winners. My "research" came from the Wall Street Journal on that point.

Re: Hagan: Discrimination still exists

By the way...this state has no clue what they voted for in Hagan...she failed to take a stance on countless issues and she told us that she would let us know when she got to DC...we could guess that she would be indebted to Schumer for about $21 million...and he is VERY LIBERAL.

She is beholden to the campaign promises she made and she voted NO on the bailout...political positive for the elections....yet as soon as she is not in a heated election and hopes that in 6 years people will forget this vote... We will not.

Re: Hagan: Discrimination still exists

Talk about the is just rhetoric...which party received more money from K-Street during the election? It was the Democrats.

Secondly her term just started a mere week ago and she has already changed her position on the bailout and co-sponsored a horrible piece of legislation. Hagan lied during her campaign and now will be a blank check for the Democrats...

By the way...Dole did work, but it is hard to do work when the Men's Club does not really value the opinion of a women...watch to see how Hagan handles the situation. She will be a puppet for Reid and Schumer like she was for Rand and Basnight.

These are just tirades of rhetoric...they are facts...do some research...

Re: Hagan: Discrimination still exists

At least Hagan actually does work when she is elected. And as for the special interests, K Street is the Republican graveyard for elected officials and connected individuals. Why must we rehash these tired old attack pieces on Kay Hagan? I don't know her personally, but I can say that this state was ready for a good work ethic and more enthusiasm for the job.

Re: Hagan: Discrimination still exists

By the way...I thought Hagan touted her ability to avoid being influenced by special interest. But the American Justice Association, formerly the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, throw her a nice DC fundraiser as well as contribution $10,000 through their PAC. Not to mention all the contributions by those pesky Trial Lawyers, except maybe John Edwards...he had other things to deal with.

If it looks like a rat, smells like a rat, probably is a rat...

Re: Hagan: Discrimination still exists

Well I can see it now...another commercial in 6 years with two old men sitting men sitting on a front porch saying how ineffective Sen. Kay Hagan's was in Washington. Did Hagan really expect that the Senate was no long the "Good Ole Boys Club." It was that was in the North Carolina Senate...so why would the US Senate be any different. I am very excited to see how effective Hagan becomes in trying to get the boys to listen to some no name freshman Senator.
