Hackney to DOT: Quit griping

House Speaker Joe Hackney scolded secretary of Transportation Gene Conti for complaining that the federal government shorted North Carolina on highway stimulus money.

Conti said Thursday that a federal plan to give the state $900 million for highways would barely cover losses in gas tax and car sales tax.

Hackney said Conti doesn't understand what the stimulus is for.

"I thought Secretary Conti's quoted comments...were inappropriate comments," Hackney said. "This money is not intended to solve our highway problems. It's intended to create jobs. It's very beneficial, even if it doesn't meet all his needs."

Re: Hackney to DOT: Quit griping

TC got it exactly right. The ongoing criminal conspiracy in Raleigh cannot afford to let the public get wind of the notion that road money is supposed to, you know, fix and build roads.

Finally, an honest politician. The tax money we give the government is not to improve our state, it is to redistribute wealth! Whether it accomplishes anything or not!

Re: Hackney to DOT: Quit griping

LOL at TC! thanks for the TRUTH chuckle...

Conti should question all about hijacked road funds from last 8 years, etc...there is a PLETHORA of insider stuff to sift thru in this one dept alone. HIRE former State Senator Fern Shubert, to investigate... she probably has a thick file on it already! GO FERN!!!

Re: Hackney to DOT: Quit griping

Spend that 'found' money on the rural roads. The cities have

soaked up more than their share of gas tax revenue.

Re: Hackney to DOT: Quit griping

cant wait for the mid-day train to start between Raleigh and Charlotte.

Re: Hackney to DOT: Quit griping

The question with regards to money for our road system should be --who is really in charge?? Perdue or Basnight? Perdue promised there would be no further robbing of the Highway Trust Fund for our state budget shortfalls and last night on WRAL Sen. Basnight informed us that this is not the year for us to stop taking money from the Trust Fund!!! Will there ever be the "right" year or time to stop robbing the Trust Fund to supply the over spenders in the State House and Senate??? Maybe I could send out Basnight's Christmas cards next year to earn a little bonus money

Re: Hackney to DOT: Quit griping

For what it's worth, Conti also said the federal money would provide benefits:

“We want to get these projects out the door to get people to work, to achieve the goals of the federal program and also achieve some of our own goals.”

But overall, the transportation revenue picture is negative, he said:

“Financially, we’re in deep trouble. Our state revenues are down.

“The highway use tax is down 21 percent. The gas taxes are down 5 percent. DMV fees are down 4 percent. Over the next three years we’re looking at a $300 million revenue decline in each of those years. So we expect the highway fund to be down 8 percent, and the highway trust fund to be down 15 percent."

Re: Hackney to DOT: Quit griping

another inane comment from TC... no surprise. I guess TC thinks that the economy is not actually going down the drain, thanks to GWB and the Repugnant-CANTs.
