Hackney: Republicans won't govern

Democratic House Speaker Joe Hackney said Democrats intend to portray Republicans this fall as the do-nothing party that is unwilling to govern.

Speaking at the Orange County Democratic Convention in Hillsborough on Saturday, Hackney said legislative Democrats made all the tough decisions during the recession in cutting the budget from $21.4 billion to $19 billion annually, Rob Christensen reports.

"If the Republicans won't cut, they won't tax, they won't govern," Hackney told about 150 people at a senior center.

Hackney said Democrats had negotiated a severe recession while preserving education and they now had a story to tell. He said the Republicans had emerged as the party of "no."

"Let's take it to the polls and see if 'no, no, no' is what they want," Hackney said.

The Democrats hold a 68-52 margin in the House.

Republicans have said they intend to run legislative campaigns that focus on the policies of Democrats President Barack Obama and Gov. Bev Perdue.

What are the Democrats going to do?

Win. Pure and simple.

The GOP has painted itself into a corner. If you are nothing but an obstacle, you get run over, at that point you've become a speed bump.

Aligning with fringe, anti-government fruitcakes won't help the Republicans in November, either. The GOP is in a sad state.

Democrats Govern, repoblicans grovel!

Democrats will campaign as grown-ups, making the hard choices that keep our state and nation free. The public bills must be paid, not ignored. repoblicans have no beliefs, they think our society can function without our citizens taking responsibility to do our part in this democracy. repoblicans just say NO to anything that requires collective action to improve our nation. They act just like children, rolling around on the floor, kicking their legs and holding their breath until someone pays attention to them. Thet offer nothing to the debate. They have no ideas. They are a Flat-Earth Beliving, Do-Nothing collection of hasbeens.

What are the Democrats going to do?

Any reporter more intrepid than Rob Christensen think about asking him?

If he's saying the Republican message is "we're not the Democrats" it is pretty clear the Democrats plan to run on the inverse message, "we're not the Republicans."

Which Perdue and Obama policies is he saying Democrats will run on?

The Perdue Billion dollar tax hike? The Perdue education cut?

The Obama take over of health care? The Obama record on job creation, whoops, I mean, job destruction?

Hackney's the one without a plan. I want to hear this story he's got to tell. Not just some claim that he's got a story to tell.
