The Democratic Governors Association puts North Carolina in its top five.
Spokesman Brian Namey said that the gubernatorial race here and in Washington, Missouri, Indiana and possibly Vermont are very competitive. Nationally, 11 states have gubernatorial races this year, but only North Carolina and Delaware have open seats.
The association is supporting Democratic nominee Beverly Perdue's campaign indirectly.
It has given $112,000 to the state Democratic Party and is supporting the Alliance for North Carolina, a recently formed 527 that is reportedly spending $300,000 to air an ad attacking Republican nominee Pat McCrory.
Namey said that the alliance does not share any leadership or members with the Democratic Governors Association. He said his group is supporting it because they share similar beliefs.
"We are supporters of the Alliance for North Carolian because they support progressive policy issues, and they are going to be talking about those issues that are important to North Carolina," he said.
He said the Democratic Governors Association will not run any ads of its own.

Re: Governors group backing Perdue indirectly
An Alliance? Reveal who the contributors are and let's decide what is in this "Swift Boat". Better yet. Put both Bev and Pat in tour of NC debating the real issues before the "working families" of NC. Quit throwing away money to buy the governor's office. Let's find out who can LEAD!
