Gov. Bev Perdue smiled big today as she announced banana king Chiquita would relocate its headquarters to Charlotte, lured by $22.7 in state and local incentives. The deal carries about 400 jobs over a three-year period.
Perdue's excitment is evident in this moment with company CEO Fernando Aguirre captured by AP photographer Chuck Burton.

How about "direct - pay?"
November 30, 2011 - 6:25am — mghoodIf you divide the state/local incentive money ($22.7 million) by 400 jobs to be created, that is ONLY $56,750.00 per job! Divided by the three-year period, that is ONLY $18,916.67 a year per job.
Do you think it would have generated more economic activity for our state's business community if 400 unemployed folks were given $18,916.67 for the next three years with instructions that ALL of it would have to be spent on goods and services MADE IN NC before the next check was issued?
Yeah, I know this is not the American way, but is corporate socialism any more so? If our folks in Raleigh would support local and small business in NC comparably, I would guess that results would be greater.
