Gore recuses self from Soles case

* The District Attorney overseeing two investigations of state Sen. R.C. Soles has recused himself from the cases.

Rex Gore said Wednesday he still sees no conflict of interest but didn’t want the focus of the case to be on him.

"I don’t think the focus of any decision that is made in this case or any other case should be anything but the evidence and the laws applied to that evidence," he said. "I’m as confident in the attorney general’s office in making the right decision as I am in my office making the right decision."

Soles is under two investigations. In the first, a Columbus County man accused Soles of fondling him when the man was a teenager. The accuser then recanted his allegation. In the second case, Soles shot one of two would-be intruders.

Gore has long-standing ties to Soles including allegations in a 1983 corruption case in which Soles was accused of trying to buy votes for Gore against Mike Easley in the Democratic primary for District Attorney. The charge against Soles was thrown out and Gore was not accused of any wrong-doing. (WS-N)

* President Barack Obama plans to address a joint session of Congress next week in an effort to rally support for health-care legislation. At the same time, White House officials are looking for ways to simplify and scale back the major Democratic bills, lower the cost and drop contentious elements. (NYT)

* Joseph Abbitt walked free Wednesday after 14 years in prison when DNA testing proved that he was innocent of charges that he raped two Winston-Salem teenage sisters. District Attorney Tom Keith, troubled by an earlier case in which DNA exonerated a convicted man, offered the tests to people prosecuted by his office. (N&O)

links to Soles stories keep disappearing.

Just a few days ago N & O published a story about the teenager tied to RC Soles being put back in jail. Can't find that page today. poof it's magic. Page unavailable.

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

Mr. Niolet, I cannot recall a link ever expiring so quickly.

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

Leave it to Beaver to make a big magilla of misdemeanors.

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

The Special Prosecutor will be .... Jim Coman, who with another AG office attorney had replaced Nifong in the Duke LAX fiasco. Remember how the AG's office decided not to prosecute Crystal Mangum, giving the impression that she was mentally fragile. But she wasn't so fragile that she couldn't finish her education - she subsequently graduated from NCCU with a bachelor's degree.

Coman was also involved in the Alan Gell case: "Jim Coman said under oath that the state Attorney General's Office had a policy of withholding a certain type of evidence helpful to defendants. As he described it, the policy would violate 30 years of U.S. Supreme Court rulings.
Coman now says, however, that his testimony was incorrect. Even so, one prominent law professor said that the prosecutor's September statements may open the door to challenges of numerous convictions in cases tried by the attorney general's staff."

Let's hope he has a healthy respect for truth & justice in the Soles investigations.

Interestingly there are now two sexual assault cases involving Soles.

PS - Mr. Niolet - is that what happens to all AP stories = they "time out" & so are no longer available on the N&O site? Thanks.

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

Okay. I'll check on the link. Thanks. BN

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

Don't have the link, try to pull it up and it says page not available. Did RC Soles search and the story was "Teen aided by Soles post pricey bond. How do I get the link??

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

Please send us any dead links you find on our site so we may fix the problem. Thanks.

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

"Rex Gore said Wednesday he still sees no conflict of interest..."

If the focus wasn't on Gore he never would've recused himself. Shows the typical lack of ethics in NC's DAs.

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

Ouch alaskan. That was really below the belt.

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

"Teen aided by Soles posts pricey bond" This was the title of the article yesterday that is unavailable today. Why?

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

Hilarious & desperate attempt to change the subject, ConMax.

Soles' "indiscretions" have absolutely nothing to do with Art Pope or some paranoid persecution fantasy you have about NC Republicans.

The story is about Soles. Try to comment about something relevant to the Soles story.

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

Why is this not an actual story on the front page?
Good take on the Soles situation: http://www.carolinajournal.com/jhdailyjournal/index.html* Luke Pope Sky babbler

Because it is nothing but Republican BS by Art Pope and his millions of dollars to control North Carolina Politics.....

Re: Gore recuses self from Soles case

Excellent post sky5714. And I would like to know what happened to the other story titled, Teen with ties to Soles post pricy bond?? It vanished, page unavailable. Lot of postings were on that one. Did someone make a call to the N & O and have it removed from sight? Guess you need to look at a blogspot in Wilmington for information. www.wilmingtonshame.blogspot.com.

Good take on the Soles situation: http://www.carolinajournal.com/jhdailyjournal/index.html

And this piece has two other brief entries lumped in with this story, that ARE actual stories on the front page.

To have a long-term state Senator, who was already mixed up in a vote-buying scandal with the D.A., who just now recused himself, involved with shooting someone (I believe in the back of the leg), filing numerous complaints with law enforcement, giving tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of dollars to young criminals is an important story for the entire state, and deserves front page coverage.

What if all these young men were instead young women? What if Soles were Republican? What if Soles were a Republican, and had paid for an apartment for a 15-yr old girl, without a legal guardian, and then bought a lot for the then-17 yr old girl, gave her $70,000 to build a house, bought her a Corvette, and had numerous inappropriate relationships with other young women as well?

Political correctness run amok.
