Republicans have seized on the inconsistent explanations of Gov. Bev Perdue's whereabouts following Saturday's tornados as an opportunity to inflict political damage.
The N.C. Republican Party has filed a public records request with Perdue's office for all documents "concerning, referencing, or pertaining to travel" by the governor, who was in Kentucky attending horse races as a line of storms ripped across the state last weekend.
"While we continue to pray for our neighbors who were affected by the devastating tornadoes of April 16th, the people of North Carolina deserve to know why Gov. Perdue went to a horse race rather than come back to the state and prepare the disaster response knowing that 'North Carolina could be in for a beating,'" said Russell Peck, executive director of the NC GOP, according to a media release.
"Perdue and her staff have not been open and honest when pressed on the details of April 16, 2011 and their statements since then, including the Governor’s today, has only clouded the details of the events of that day," he said.
Peck said the records request is intended to find answers about precisely where Perdue was during the tornadoes, who from her staff was with her, who she was in contact with during the tornadoes and "why Governor Perdue chose to stay at a horse race while tornadoes ravaged our state.”
Additionally, the Republicans are seeking all documents pertaining to travel by Perdue since she became governor in January 2009 and all documents about food and entertainment expenses at the Executive Mansion since the beginning of the Perdue administration.

The Republicans issued their release Wednesday as some national media outlets picked up the story and compared Perdue's situation to that of other governors criticized after they were away as natural disasters struck back home.
Chrissy Pearson, Perdue's communications director, triggered the issue when, in the hours immediately after the storm, she refused to say where the governor was beyond that she was out of state attending to a "family obligation."
On Wednesday, Pearson tried to mitigate the damage as much as she could in a new statement.
Gov. Perdue and the first gentleman were in Kentucky on a personal visit which included attending horse races.
The communications staff explained it this way: Mark Johnson said the governor was “at the race” because she was at the track and attended some preliminary races.
I said “she did not make it to the race” because she left early and did not attend the main race, the Blue Grass Stakes.
The governor cut her trip short to deal with a veto and the weather threat as it became clear that storms may cause significant damage.
The governor and the first gentleman took a commercial flight home recommended to them by the Highway Patrol as the flight least likely to be delayed by weather.

Governor Dumpling Caught Lying
April 22, 2011 - 8:04am — IKWUMNot only was she out of state, she went to a horse race in Kentucky on Saturday morning when all weather forecasters were predicting tornadoes . Then the governor's office lied about her wherabouts. Why did she want to hide the fact that she was watching horse races in Kentucky with another democratic governor? What a loser.
Wrong viewpoint
April 21, 2011 - 9:34am — JonesStJunkieIt's not a petty attack by the Right. The issue is in the fact that she lied and deceived the public. The Governor is an individual, as well as, a politician and has the right to travel and have fun. The problem is that her and her staff immediately lied about the situation rather than be open and honest.
Republicans in Raleigh
April 21, 2011 - 7:56am — MtnManAll of our thoughts and prayers go out to our cousins and friends in the Triangle suffering from the tornados.
That being said, it seems that deeper and more permanent damage to the state we all love is being inflicted by the Republicans' cuts-only budget, that is cutting off limbs from our public institutions that lift up the health, safety, education and welfare of our citizens in North Carolina. Cuts to early childhood education, public schools, community colleges, and universities to pay for increased spending for their peculiar ideological agendas grate at the skin even deeper.

Bev out of touch
April 21, 2011 - 7:33am — concerned53Doug Hoell, by his own admission was not able to talk with Bev until Saturday evening. It is clear that Bev was out of touch with the emergency as why did she not talk with her emergency director on either Friday or Saturday despite everyone knowing that terrible storms were crossing the country and heading towards NC.
Preparedness
April 20, 2011 - 10:38pm — blackdogDoug Hoell was in charge of emergency response, like he is with ALL emergencies. The govenor returned as soon as she was informed of the change of status of the storms. How about some JOBS !
Bev's hole gets deeper
April 20, 2011 - 9:45pm — concerned53Bev & Chrissy have brought this upon themselves given all of the inconsistencies in their statements over the past few days. No longer can we rely on, or believe their statements on this issue of leadership. NC's citizens now deserve access to information & records to determine what really happened. If Bev is reluctant to share this information, consider it a given that she and her staff were lying about what really happened in Kentucky. Perhaps a democratic fundraiser or use of another illegal flight. Fess up Bev! But, don't hold your breath.....
petty petty petty
April 20, 2011 - 9:40pm — AgentPierceIt's a petty issue to hammer her with ..... but such is how politics is played these days by BOTH sides.
