For the first time in modern history, at least one Republican is running for the state Senate in all 50 districts.
"We should have a Republican in all 50 (Senate) districts in the state. I think that is the first time that has ever happened," said State Senate Republican leader Phil Berger.
Democrats have controlled the legislature for most of the last 100 years, but state Republicans see 2010 as a year that could go their way with a strong anti-incumbent sentiment and ethical and legal questions swirling about former Democratic Gov. Mike Easley's administration.

February 26, 2010 - 10:51pm — taylorIt is fine with me to see democracy flourishing everywhere. I am the Democratic nominee running as a challenger to the incumbent, Republican Sen. Neal Hunt, so I am priviledged to be a part of this great exercise of the popular vote.
The Republican Party is sensing victory, but, nevertheless, I am going to campaign to find out what the people need, not to only tell them what I think, or to only criticize the other side. Let's get back to ordinary, common-sense talk and to finding common ground where we can. We owe the people, many suffering great losses, at least this much.
