GOP defends Ayers mailers

The state GOP defended a mailer that ties Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama with former 1960s radical William Ayers.

"Every word on that mailer is true," said Brent Woodcox, the state GOP spokesman. "William Ayers is a former domestic terrorist who has not shown regret over his crimes. Fact. Mr. Ayers did host a campaign launch event for Senator Obama in Chicago. Fact. Senator Obama and Mr. Ayers know each other and have worked together in the past. Fact. Senator Obama has previously referred to him as a friend."

The Republican flyer was sharply criticized by state Democratic chairman Jerry Meek earlier in the day, saying the ads saying it was "a smear campaign," Rob Christensen reports.

Woodcox said Obama's judgement on the matter is a legitimate issue.

And he denied Meek’s assertion that the flyer tried to mislead by making readers think that comments made about bombing was made by Obama, not Ayers.

"No one would seriously believe that the Democrat candidate for President was involved in the setting of bombs," Woodcox said. "It is delusional paranoia for Chairman Meek to suggest an intent to deceive."

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

Isaac,

You are right and I should not make light of this incident. As a matter of fact I would think we would all be greatly concerned if some big bearded Palin supporter beat up RTB.

I would certainly be concerned myself........but it would probably be fun to watch.

Just jokin' of course. RTB would probably deactivate the guy before he knew what happened.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

GOP is sounding like sour grapes. McCain was the target of this same type of SMEAR campaign in 2000 against GWB. After that McCain has admitted that he STILL back GWB 90% of the time. You keep recycling the same ole crap time and again. He's been running for almost 2 years now and you still have NOTHING but innuendo. There have been many well respected individuals (Republican, Democratic, & Independent) that have served on the same projects with Ayers. Ayers has even received a Citizen of the Year Award in Chicago. You want to impart all of Ayers negative characteristics on Obama for your political convenience. It's time that you move on with your unfounded rumors and innuendo.

Now let's talk about Socialist principles. McCain is harping on Obama's statement to "spread the wealth". Well what do you think McCain is doing when he wants to give $300 Billion in additional tax breaks to wealthy corporations and up to $750,000 to the super rich? It appears that the only difference is to whom the wealth is being spread. It can relieve a tax burden on 95% of Americans and 98% of small businesses that are the economic engine of this country or it can be spread to the rich where many of them can live a lifetime on just a years salary. Additionally let's talk about Gov Palin. She taxed the oil companies in Alaska, and redistributed that money to the citizens of Alaska. Is that not also a Socialist principle? Get a grip on yourself and stop hiding your head in the sand when it pertains to the Grand Ole Party.

We can also talk about McCains past dealings with G.Gordon Liddy who advocated break-ins, firebombings, assassinations, and kidnappings. As recently at 2007 McCain praised Liddy's "adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.

Now to Sarah Palin and her involvement in the Alaska Independence Party that advocated secession from the US. Hmmmmmm, they dislike the US so much that they don't want to be part of the US. Sarah Palin gave the Welcome Address at this party's convention this year. Now maybe you should ask, why is a Republican giving an address at an opposing party's convention. Her husband also happened to be registered as a member of that party for many years.

Now Domewatcher, don't mistake the kindness and generosity that flows from my posts at DOME for willingness to subject myself to what an actual teacher puts up with. Yes, I am wise beyond your ken. Yes, I have a reasonable grasp of the English language, and yes, I like to laugh.

This is why I am taking you (virtually and virtuously) by the shoulders and shaking you gently and advising you that you are losing your touch.

Please let me assure you that I do admire the fact that you keep trying, despite failure after failure, to convert the assault on a reporter into a rib-tickler.

But after a while the effort puts a person less in mind of a just-thrown but plucky rider getting back in the saddle and more of a man flaying a dead horse.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

(Prof. Isaac: I am submitting this for extra credit. Please take into account my good attendance and all those apples I bring you each class.)

Top ten do’s and don’t for newspaper reporters at a Palin rally:

10. Don’t make eye contact with anyone, bearded or not.
9. Do try to act like a normal person, not a newspaper guy with that natural air of superiority.
8. Don’t ask anyone if rednecks are born redneck or if they become rednecks later on.
7. Don’t ask them to take off their shirts so you can photograph their red necks. (Important: Never ask a big bearded Palin supporter to take his shirt off. He might get the wrong idea.)
6. But you should definitely take off your Obama t-shirt.
5. Don’t sing the Obama pledge of allegiance while standing in the crowd.
4. Drink regular bottled water. Leave the Fiji water in the car.
3. Think of your job as reporting the facts and not making a political statement in favor of Obama.
2. When the big bearded Palin supporter walks up to you....don’t say, “I’m your huckleberry.”

1. And when the big bearded Palin guy starts whistling the theme song from Deliverance, run and don’t look back…..don’t ever look back……..keep running……and hope your tires weren‘t slashed.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

My dear Isaac,

You must be a teacher who loves to grade papers.

The funny part of the story is that the reporter and various bloggers tried to make the attack of the big bearded Palin supporter into a big news story.........all the while bending over backward to spin Ayers as the kind of best friend to have. It is also funny that the big bearded Palin supporter is the "villian of all villians" but yet Ayers is given the free pass since he is one of Obama's old buddies.

I find humor in just about all politics. Every side stretches the truth and most of the political ads are hilarious. I hope that President Obama and Vice President Biden have a sense of humor. The press may love them now but those guys love a story......live the big bearded Palin supporter who sends people 'sprawling to the ground." That phrase made the story. It's so much more 'newspaperish' than "knocked me down."

Lighten up and laugh a little. You'll make it yet as a "humor critic" and the pay is probably higher than what Dome pays us now.

And sprawl out.........peace.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

Bankrupt banking system, economy, health care policies, foreign policies.

Why am I not surprised by bankrupt politics as usual from the same McBush crowd that's been running our country into the ground for the last eight years?

Keep it up, guys. Your clock is winding down.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

No, Domewatcher. You're still trying too hard to achieve a tone that isn't going to work here. It's just not funny that the jerk assaulted the reporter, and you can't make it funny by repeating phrases from the report or the blog as though focus on the description of the incident can provide an amusing distraction from the incident itself.

Maybe you'll have better luck making light of the slashed tires in Fayetteville. Who wouldn't picture him or herself returning to a car with slashed tires and getting a huge chuckle out of your witty distillation of that adorable prank?

Do work on that, 'cause I think you sent yourself sprawling with this second, flubbed attempt and I'd kind of like to see you knock yourself out again.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

We were thrilled to get this mailer about 'innocent' BOMBER Wm Ayers, now the timid academic, and his wife Bernadine Dohrn, once on the FBI 10 most wanted list who is now, or has been a recent Michelle Obama top assistant.

HOW can anyone VOTE for this kind of a candidate??? His mission is totally misguided toward personal power and greed, and the ability to speak articulately as he scares the people into accepting socialism.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

The issue of Ayers and his “bombing” past concerns me. But what concerns me more is the vicious attack on newspaper reporters by big bearded Palin supporters. What is this country coming to when newspaper reporters are sent “sprawling to the ground” after being kicked in the back of the knee by big bearded Palin supporters?

I am now fearful every time I see a big person with a beard……and constantly ask myself, “Is this big bearded man a Palin supporter? Will he send me ‘sprawling to the ground’ after kicking me in the back of the knee?”

I hope that this big bearded Palin supporter will be found and brought to justice. Is kicking a newspaper reporter in the back of the knee a felony?…..a hate crime?……treason? How about if this reporter had spilled his mocha? The only positive thing was that it probably did not wrinkle the reporter’s clothes as most reporters look like they slept in their clothes in the first place. (This only refers to male reporters. The female reporters wear that 1960’s hippie mess which never looked ironed in the first place.)

These big bearded Palin supporters must be stopped. Newspaper reporters are one of America’s strongest weapons in the war on common sense. Please contact your newspaper and tell them to send armed guards with their reporters until these big bearded Palin supporters are imprisoned. Beware of big bearded people as they may be crazed Palin supporters.

If you have a beard please shave it off in support of newspaper people everywhere. Save the reporters. Protect your knees. Buy them some clothes. We can build a strong America if we stop kicking newspaper reporters in the back of the knee………..and send them “sprawling to the ground.”

“Sprawling”…….not a word that gets a lotta use these days. But a good newspaper word.

Sprawl out……brothers.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

The facet that Ayers is now an academic supplants the motivation for fearing his relationship with Obama. I went to undergrad at UNC and grad school at NYU. I had numerous professor promote a variety of incredulous notions all the while acknowledge their complete inability to be of use if implemented. Academic live in their dream fantasy world. Let's serious about the new claim that he is harmless because he is an academic.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

The GOP is just getting in a few last jabs. I doubt the postal service will be allowed to mail anything not approved by the "Truth Squads" in the future.

And I don't see the problem anyway. If the academics say Ayers is a great guy.....well, that's certainly good enough for me.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

Tangoz - I read your responses quite frequently on this message board and I must insist, please relax.

Let the left wing radicals on this blog get emotional, as that is the underlying theme of their ideology.

You claim to be a Republican, relax, show restraint, listen and understand where they are coming from to solve our problems. Beat them at their own game...

Leaders require the ability to listen.

I respect your candidacy very much so, but yelling incites rage and hatred. This country needs leadership, hopefully America will see through the rage and emotional ideology and vote for logic and the ability to work across the aisle.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

Every sensible and logical American across the country should with much scrutiny evaluate the relationships of Obama's past. I would insist on some clarity of unbiased nature from the media, if possible, on the relationship of Tony Rezko, Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, and his former Pakistani roommate.

Given Obama's admission that his economic policies are socialist in principle and the publicly announced stances of the aforementioned individuals, the anti-American sentiment is the commonality. I must question this and demand answers if you are looking for my vote. Every American must do this.

This election will impact the younger generations. The American dream is wealth, but it is wealth to preserve a bright and prosperous future for the generations to come. We, as Americans, have become to centralized in our own life to focus on the true American dream, working for the future.

John McCain might not be the best candidate for President, but the livelihood and the long term prosperity of Americans will be much more secured on his watch. You may argue with me, but research everything before you do, as any intelligent person knows not to raise a point without a sound and valid argument to rebuttal.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama with former 1960s radical William Ayers.

Correction: Obama with self admitted mass murderer William Ayers.

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

I guess Prototype has not seen the children and grandchildren that would not be alive today if William Ayer's domestic terrorist group had not been so inept at bombing buildings to mass murder people.

If you hate America so much, well...............

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

JWC is right. William Ayers is a great American and is one of those who have made this country great. Hopefully he will have an expanded role in the coming years. What a fighter!

Re: GOP defends Ayers mailers

They can send out all the sleazy mailers they want. The electorate is too disgusted with these Republicans to fall for the dirty tricks this year. With N.C. falling into the blue column it will be an early night!
