William Gheen says both Elizabeth Dole and Kay Hagan are sounding "the right notes."
In an article in the Greensboro News & Record, the anti-illegal immigration activist says that the U.S. senator and her Democratic rival are talking tough, though both have shortcomings.
Hagan's campaign has criticized Dole for not doing more on the problem after voting against immigration reforms pushed by President Bush, while Dole's campaign has criticized Hagan's 2001 vote on a driver's license bill.
More generally, Gheen said that Hagan will be able to criticize Dole for federal inaction, while Dole can tar Hagan for not doing enough at the state level.
"The North Carolina legislature, which has been under the control of the Democrats, has been killing almost every state-level enforcement bill in committee for years," said Gheen, head of the Americans for Legal Immigration PAC.
Though Hagan has not played a direct role in the Senate leadership's dismissal of bills, Gheen told the newspaper that she'll suffer by being associated with those who "have been vocal in their support of illegal aliens."
