Folwell bows out of treasurer's race

Dale FolwellDale Folwell will not run for state treasurer.

The Winston-Salem Republican said today that he would not run for the Republican nomination for treasurer, instead seeking re-election to his state House seat, the Winston-Salem Journal reports.

Folwell said that he had heard from many supporters that he could be more successful staying in the House, even though he is in minority party.

"God blessed me with two good options here," he said

He had raised $32,862 in this election cycle, leaving him with $133,605 in cash on hand at the end of December, according to his campaign finance reports

His rival, state Rep. Bill Daughtridge, raised $136,690 in the same time period, but he spent more, leaving him with $78,934 in cash on hand, his reports showed.

Folwell was definitely frugal. He once called Dome late on a Sunday night, because that's when his campaign cell phone had free minutes.

Re: Janet Cowell

The possibility of North Carolina's Presidential Primary being relevent will likely assist Cowell. Women coming out to support Hillary will look to her, and progressives and young voters coming out for Obama will likely find her appealing as well.

Dority should take a lesson in Lt. Gov's race.

Janet Cowell

This election, which features two exciting and dynamic Democratic candidates in the presidential primary race, should be the year for people who look forward at the state level, too. Janet Cowell is the person to take us forward.

Re: Folwell bows out of treasurer's race

I'm glad that Mr. Folwell gave it a try. However I'm glad that he realized it was better to step aside, so we can save our ammo for the Democrats in November in the Treasurer race. I'm glad to see that the party can come together. I've run for State House in 2004, so I know that both men put their heart & soul into this race. Good luck to Daughtridge in November!

Re: Folwell bows out of treasurer's race

This is great news. Folwell is certainly a capable legislator, and the House and taxpayers in North Carolina need him.

I feel Daughtridge's business experience gives him the needed "gravitas" to be a very capable Treasurer.

This will also help Daughtridge focus on the general election and not have to spend valuable resources fighting an inner-party battle.

It looks as if the GOP is maturing into a party that can put personal ambitions aside for the good of the state.

Kudos to both men! Truly this is a win/win for all of North Carolina.
