Renee Ellmers says fear is preventing an economic recovery.
Ellmers, 45, is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge, a Lillington Democrat.
"I'm running for Congress because I'm a mom and I'm very afraid of where our country is going and where the current administration in Washington is taking us," said Ellmers, a registered nurse and first-time political candidate who became politically active during the summer debates over health care reform.
Ellmers said Democratic proposals such as health care reform and a cap-and-trade system to limit carbon emissions have prevented businesses from growing and hiring.
"Businesses aren't hiring because they're too afraid of what's pending. They're too afraid of government-run health care and cap and trade and the effects they might have on their business," Ellmers said.
Ellmers said she believes she can present a strong challenge to Etheridge.
"Although he considers himself a fiscally conservative Democrat, it would be hard to see that based on his most recent voting record," she said.
"I am a woman and that is not something he has come up against before."

Jesse Helms' 1984 and 1990 campaigns.
John McLaughlin, who did polls for Helms and U.S. Sen. Lauch Faircloth, will be the campaign's pollster.
Former Helms political advisor Carter Wrenn will be the campaign’s general consultant and strategist.

Re: Ellmers: fear' holding economy back
December 24, 2009 - 12:38pm — belitaRenee Ellmers speaks not only for business people but for all Americans who are seriously distressed by the actions of this Administration. It is true that our government has been taking us down this path to socialism for many years, but this Administration has determined to NOT listen to the majority of Americans. Our elected officials ( ie Bob Etheridge) have chosen to represent the desires of the President and ignore the desires of the people. That is not what they have been elected to do! I, for one, would welcome Ellmers as a candidate to stand up against Etheridge and this Administration. If she can do that there will be many who will support her. Businesses cannot survive in a socialistic environment and no banks will loan money as long as our President continues to threaten them if they do not do what he wants. Please stand up and fight for Ellmers if she lives up to her words!!!

December 16, 2009 - 9:04am — captainjackJust a few more troops and a little bit more spending and we will learn them some democracy. An escalation in the war will scare them to death and this crusade will be mission accomplished.
I don't think fear is holding us back. I think we have grown ripe and now are beginning to rot.
