Elizabeth Dole's brother dies

The brother of U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole died yesterday.

According to a statement from Dole's Senate office, John Hanford died at his home in Charlotte after a long battle with cancer.

A World War II veteran, Hanford attended Duke University, inspiring his younger sister to attend.

"John has been not only a loving brother, but also a trusted friend and counsel to Elizabeth throughout her life and career," read the statement.

Dole left the Senate Monday afternoon to be with family in North Carolina. Memorial service informaiton will be announced when plans are determined.

Hanford is survived by his wife Bunny, sons John and Jody and three grandchildren.
