Edwards won't return to UNC center

The UNC think tank that once provided John Edwards a platform to discuss poverty issues is not counting on the former Senator and two-time presidential candidate to return to the fold.

The University of North Carolina Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity was launched in 2005, and Edwards served as its director until he resigned at the end of 2006 to launch his second run at the Democratic Party’s nomination for president, Lorenzo Perez reports.

Edwards' disclosure Friday to ABC's "Nightline" that he had an affair with campaign videographer Rielle Hunter has had no impact on contributions or grants to the nonpartisan center, said Katie Bowler, assistant dean for communications for UNC’s law school.

Edwards has not had a role at the Chapel Hill center since since he left it in 2006, Bowler said.

"He continues to support the ideals of the center, but there’s no expectation that he will be returning," Bowler said.

Re: Edwards won't return to UNC center

I have no doubt in a few weeks, after this has blown over, that Mr. Edwards will be back in either in D.C. or New York, helping multi-billionaires set up their overseas "tax-free" hedge funds. Folks seem to forget that was Mr. Edwards "other" job.

Re: Edwards won't return to UNC center

Why was a man of his wealth even taking $40,000?

Re: Edwards won't return to UNC center

I would like info about what programs the center has in place, and more importantly, whether it will now fold or has a valid continuing mission and support. If it's legit, those questions should be easily answered, but I don't know the answers.

Re: Edwards won't return to UNC center

"All while getting a six figure salary from taxpayers' money that we all know he did not need."

He made $40,000 at the Poverty Center. Less than a maintenance mechanics, administrative support specialists, and electricians at UNC.

Complain if you like, GrayJ, but don't just make stuff up.

Re: Edwards won't return to UNC center

"This thing was nothing more than a ruse from day one. It was set up solely to provide a political forum for keeping Johnny Edwards in the public eye until the next presidential election."

Absolutely; Edwards used UNC.

Re: Edwards won't return to UNC center

People really did think John Edwards was going to be an emerging leader... straight enough, but young enough to be in touch with all age groups. I knew, however, that he came into the spotlight too dramatically to be believed, having never really done much to start with except making a success of himself as a tort lawyer. He should apologize to the people of NC for wasting our time and effectiveness as a one-term senator whose only goal was to see himself to the presidency any way he could get there, and now as just one more adulterer.

Re: Edwards won't return to UNC center

Sounds like good news to me. I feel certain that everybody has already heard his one speech about the two Americas.

Re: Edwards won't return to UNC center

But, but what about all the poverty stricken people that Johnny cared about? What's gonna happen to them? Who's being selfish here, UNC or the Breck Girl? ... all those poor pitiful people ... will they get the 'change' they deserve?

Re: Edwards won't return to UNC center

This is such a shame he won't be returning to the center because he did some remarkable things while he was director, remember?.........Like talk(campaign) about Two Americas..........and talk(campaign) some more. All while getting a six figure salary from taxpayers' money that we all know he did not need.

Re: Edwards won't return to UNC center

This thing was nothing more than a ruse from day one. It was set up solely to provide a political forum for keeping Johnny Edwards in the public eye until the next presidential election. The attempt at keeping him viable might have worked had someone of character been the object of affection for the lefties of Orange instead of that egocentric jerk.

Re: Edwards won't return to UNC center

So, there IS a limit to the degree of shame that UNC is willing to absorb to support this guy. Good to know. Now, how does UNC justify Gene Nichol being on campus?
