Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

Former Democratic Gov. Mike Easley has spent $222,000 in campaign funds on lawyers this year, according to a new report filed today.

The report shows that spending on three law firms ramped up as investigations started into issues surrounding Easley and his campaign this spring, reports Andy Curliss. Elections officials have said that the former governor, who left office in January, can spend his campaign funds on legal issues that arise out of the governor's position as an office holder, which covers a broad area.

One of the lawyers working for Easley, John R. Wallace, said in a statement:  "The legal service provided included compliance services, research and reporting, and the gathering and assembly of information from past campaigns.  We have been providing information to move this matter forward and are intent on coming to a quick resolution."

Elections officials have said they have concerns about the campaign's activities and have indicated there will be hearings on the issues sometime in September.

More after the jump.

A breakdown on the legal bills:

* Wallace's firm, which specializes in campaign issues, was paid $72,728 through. Most of that was in two checks – one for $29,612 on May 1 and another for $34,576 paid on June 3.

* The Raleigh firm of Poyner Spruill was paid $100,000 on April 17 for "legal services/retainer." Calls to the firm were referred to David Long, a veteran lawyer whose biography on the firm's Web site says he has 40 years of experience litigating and focusing on "complex business and white collar criminal cases in State and Federal courts." Long could not be reached.

* The Greensboro firm of Clifford Clendenin & O'Hale was paid $50,000 on May 15 for "legal services/retainer." It has been previously reported that criminal defense lawyer Locke Clifford was working for Easley. That check from Easley's campaign was written the same day state and federal investigators revealed wide-ranging probes of issues surrounding Easley, including questions raised about his use of cars and unreported campaign flights.

Clifford served until May 19 on a panel appointed by U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan, a Democrat, that screened for federal appointments. Hagan has said he was not involved in recommendations on federal prosecutors, but did participate in discussions on judicial appointments.

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

No big deal here.

I'm sure many lawyers contributed to Easley's campaign early on. And so now the money is simply coming out the other end to pay some other lawyers to clear up some "minor issues." Seems to be almost a type of "poetic justice."

It's like a North Carolina "Cash for Clunkers" program.

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

To say that people, who in good faith, voted for Easley are "suckers" because of his legal troubles is illogical. What about the people who, in good faith, voted for Nixon? Should they have been able to predict Watergate? We all vote with high hopes, but it is not the public's fault when the politicians let them down later. But you make a good point about the limits of how a public official can spend his unspent campaign funds.

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

further thinking...

What does the NC Democrat Party Chairman think of how Sleazely is using precious donations? Any comment from the NCDP? hmmm?

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

The longer the investigations drag on the more likely the Easley bunch will be found guilty of criminal acts. Then Mary can use some of her ill gotten salary to fund their appeals.

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

Career politicians breed corruption and lies. Vote them out or they and their cronies die in office.

Option one.....you win
Option two.....you lose

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

This is the height of "irony"; I'm neither a democrat nor republican, but the democrat idiots who blindly vote these slimy democrats in year after year so that they become entrenched like a chronic disease, how do you feel now? Not only have you (and all the taxpayers) been sc-rewed royally by the likes of Easley, NOW you get to PAY FOR HIS SHADY LAWYERS with your DONATIONS! You can't make this crap up!

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

He's a scumbag (spit) lawyer, his pig wife is a scumbag (spit) lawyer, he works in a scumbag (spit) law firm, and yet he has to go out and spend $222,000 hiring a scumbag (spit)lawyer? You can bet your life a big part of that money was kicked back to him under the table. Saying it was for a scumbag (spit) lawyer was just a way to scam the campaign fund for it. WHAT A CERTIFIED LOW-LIFE CROOK!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

Maybe it's why Mary needs the job.

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

Well, it makes sense. People dumb enough to contribute to his election are the same dimwits contributing to the oddball's defense now. It's right in line with their objectives, so it all fits. It's personification of the adage: "There's a sucker born every minute."

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

If I had given to this campaign, I would be really sorry to see my dollars used to shore up a criminal. Do y'all feel like suckers?

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

hmmmmm, that's a tidy sum for someone who was so confident at the onset of the investigation

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

Don't you know that all of those loyal democrats are SOOOOO happy that the campaign donations they made to his campaign are now going to pay for a bunch of lawyers to help him cover his tracks.

Suckers.

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

So, we should feel sorry for Sleazely, right?

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

Ahh, BitterEXdemocrat, sorry to burst your indignant bubble with pesky facts, but the Alston & Bird office in NC specializes in patent law:

And the office in DC has Bob Dole listed as special counsel.

And no, John Wallace does not work for them.

Re: Easley spends campaign money on lawyers

What a nice, tight-knit group.
