Easley hopes to attract Italian tourists

Gov. Mike Easley hopes to attract some Italian tourists to North Carolina during his economic trip to Italy.

The governor plans to spend about a week in Italy, meeting with Italian business leaders, promoting business investment in the state, as well as more tourism, Rob Christensen reports.

Because of the weak dollar, North Carolina might be more attractive to both Italian business leaders and tourists.

"Everything is 33 percent off or more," Easley said during an airport layover in New York.

Among other things, Easley said the North Carolina delegation will get a look at the wine industry, which is becoming increasingly important in North Carolina. He said North Carolina’s dry weather had been good for the state's vineyards.

Easley said he plans to have one meeting in London before heading home next weekend.

Re: Easley hopes to attract Italian tourists

The good people of Italy will surely be interested to know that Como, N.C., in Hertford County, was named for Lake Como in Italy, according to Professor William Powell's "North Carolina Gazetteer."

Then of course, it might not do any harm to mention that here in North Carolina, we take pride in the fact that we're not all that far from Florence. Florence, Italy? No, I reckon we'd have to 'fess up and say we're talking about Florence, S.C., but it's still "molto bene!"

Oh, and don't forget Verona!

Italy has its Piedmont, and so we do, so Italian tourists should feel right at home in the Old North State. And hey, you probably could fit a couple of gondolas in the Cape Fear River between Lillington and Fayetteville...

contact the State Dept and have them take Sleazely's passport so that he cannot re enter the country nor the state...its a start to a new beginning...

Re: Dont lose it, Gerry

actually, I think I have to send it to state surplus for them to sell.

Dont lose it, Gerry

My god, no -- it's a rarity. It should be preserved on that if no other basis. You could sell it on ebay.

Re: his economic trip

Re Ryan's "more expensive" history book -
You are shameless, sir. :)

Re: his economic trip

I just got an email from the Governor's office reminding me to pay use tax on Rob's book if I order from Amazon (I am actually buying it from Quail Ridge). May I delete the email? It only has ephemeral value.

Now you're talking

WOW, that history book looks like a mighty fine read to me! A reviewer said it was "chalk full," after all.

Re: his economic trip

Hmmm. I bet there's a more expensive history book out there somewhere.

Re: his economic trip

The book is not expensive enough to qualify for super saver free shipping. I have to buy $5.10 more. This is a reply to RTB's promotional link below.

Oh THAT

I saw/heard Rob's presentation of it at Quail Ridge Books recently. It sounds like his book is full of some extremely interesting anecdotes, and I don't think I'll be able to resist buying it.

Re: his economic trip

Actually, he was reading Rob's book in the airport and called to chat with him about it.

his economic trip

I take it that Easley's office didn't care for your original posting on this trip.
