Easley endorses Perdue, Dalton

Gov. Mike Easley endorsed Beverly Perdue in her campaign to be the first female governor of North Carolina today.

In a news conference at the Democratic Party headquarters, Easley said Perdue has an extended track record of commitment to the state’s residents, especially children, Ben Niolet reports.

"Her commitment to the kids of this state started a long time ago," Easley said. Easley also endorsed Walter Dalton, the party's nominee for lieutenant governor. In a brief speech, Perdue said her campaign will focus on education as the key to better opportunity.

"This race is going to be decided by which candidate is the best for the middle-class of North Carolina," Perdue said.

In November, she faces Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, who won the Republican nomination Tuesday night. McCrory has scheduled a news conference in Raleigh for noon today.

McCrory ran a campaign focused on reforming what he says is wrong with the Democratic-controlled state government.
