State Sen. Don Vaughan, a Democrat from Greensboro, has decided not to seek re-election, after having been drawn into a Republican-leaning district with Senate leader Phil Berger.
“It's the toughest decision I ever had to make in my life,” Vaughan said.
“I was put in a double bunk with Phil Berger," he said. "It goes around my house and up to Rockingham County. Hopefully, the courts will see fit to change the district.” Vaughan, who was first elected in 2008, also considered running against Republican Congressman Howard Coble, but decided to forego the race.
Although he does not plan to run in 2010, the 59-year old Vaughan said that did not preclude a future run for elective office.
