Dole: More nuclear power, domestic oil

Don't get your hopes up about a Lieberman-Dole climate change bill.

In Raleigh today for a meeting with the Disabled American Veterans group, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole told Dome she was dismayed that the Climate Security Act failed in the Senate today.

"It's unfortunate, but that's it for now," said Dole, who had voted to move the bill forward.

Since Republican co-sponsor John Warner will be retiring at the end of the session, Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman is reportedly looking for a new member of the GOP to push a revamped bill in next year's session. Dole was asked if she would be interested.

"I think we have to wait and see how things evolve, what happens," she said. "You've got to really have an opportunity to look at the language."

Dole was a cosponsor of the bill introduced in October, but she was not the lead Republican.

She said she hopes a future bill will include provisions to promote nuclear power and exploration of potential oil fields "in areas where people want it" — specifically the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

"People don't want it in North Carolina, but in Alaska they're begging for it," she said.

Re: Dole: More nuclear power, domestic oil

How about 3 ANWR's-worth of oil?

That's what bumping the CAFE standards up from 27.5 mpg to 35 mpg (should have been 45, but I'll take what we got for now) will represent for us by 2020: a reduction of our oil usage by 2.5 million barrels per day.

note: that's also around 900,000 tons of c02 not emitted per day...

Re: Dole: More nuclear power, domestic oil

Back in 04, we were consuming approximately 21 million barrels of oil per day (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/print/us.html). If we started drilling in ANWR today, we'd begin getting oil out of there in 9 years. After 21 years, we'd reach ANWR's peak production of 876,000 barrels per day (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4542853/). So, even at peak production, 21 years from now, drilling in ANWR would expand our oil supply by no more than 4% of current consumption. Why bother?

Re: Dole: More nuclear power, domestic oil

Good grief, a John Locke plant chimes in to tout "poll" results at complete variance with a consistent multi-decade pattern of results from unbiased polling organizations in our state. A strong and consistent majority of North Carolinians, especially including coastal residents, have never supported risking our natural heritage and active coastal economy just to fatten the profits of Big Oil.

Keep dreaming, friend; its tendency to believe its own extremist rhetoric is what keeps the Locke crew politically marginal in our competitive state.

Elizabeth Dole has shown her true colors by picking the economically and environmentally worst options within the energy debate to tout for next year. With any luck, she won't be in the Senate next year to promote this backward-looking agenda.

Re: Dole: More nuclear power, domestic oil

But NC voters DO want exploration and drilling off the coast of NC.
See Civitas' latest poll results on that:

Do you support or oppose oil and gas exploration off the coast of North Carolina?
Support 68%
Oppose 20%
Not sure 11%
