Dole lawyers: 'Godless' ad is truthful

What an idiot Dole is, to not back off her outrageous claims. It's obviously NOT working. Couldn't she see where making such claims has gotten other candidates this time around? Bachmann, Hayes, Palin... all have run into opposition for making such anti-American charges against opponents and consitutents. Even Chambliss and McConnell are threatened. So you choose a tactic to alienate moderates?

She was only down slightly with polls showing Hagan up less than one percent, in a virtual tie. Now that she's run this ad, she's down 5.5%.

This woman is either too stupid or too arrogant to be senator. Or, maybe she's senile. Send her back to Kansas, DC or wherever she really would rather be.

Regardless of the fact that Hagan IS a Christian... so what if she wasn't? Since when is subscription to a particular belief a requirement for public office?

I'm absolutely flummoxed that this is an issue AT ALL.

It's refreshing to see that most Americans, and especially conservatives Republicans, are recoiling in disgust from Dole's pathetic smear.

We have Michelle Bachman losing money for trying to resurrect Joe McCarthy, we've got Robin Hayes having to gag on his own words (it was kind of fun watching him squirm there), we have Sarah Palin claiming some states don't love the country as much as other states, and we've got Elizabeth Dole accusing a fellow Christian of being 'godless.'

This ad is horrendous. I am glad Kay Hagan, a fine woman that I know, has made a response commercial. The funny part in this article is the fact that Carter Wrenn is appalled by it. That is the pot calling the kettle black! If not for him and Jesse Helms and Tom Ellis, this state would have never seen such garbage as negative ads. Their hate filled lies filled the airways every six years.

In an election in Minnesota between Rudy Boschwitz, a well-funded incumbent Republican senator, and Paul Wellstone, a Democratic party gad-fly, Boschwitz had the election sewn up until just before the election he came out and stated "I am a better Jew" than Paul Wellstone (both candidates were Jewish). Boschwitz lost the election, and most people polled who had changed their vote or made up their mind at the last minute said they attributed their vote for Wellstone directly to Boschwitz's statment about his "better" religious practices. I guess North Carolina (and the rest of the planet thanks to the web) now knows that Ms. Dole beleives she is a "better" Christian than her opponent. Isn't that special!? The ad implies that Hagan is the person saying 'there is no god'. If/since Hagan took money, make that plain and have Hagan explain that.

Taking bucks and support from this PAC should trouble us; as should money and support from the klan, the Wright, or the terrorist organizaton. Can our candidate make her/his point and still be descent?

Yes, the specter of the past is upon us. Can you say NC Congressional Club? Can you say Helms/Gantt? As a life-long Democrat, AND ardent Liddy Dole supporter, I am ashamed and completely disappointed with my (our) current Lady Senator and her handlers. You answer the question: "What DID she promise them (the "godless folks)? What, Senator, do you promise the folks from whom you get donations and support?

Last time I looked Schumer had pumped over 11 million dollars in negative ads against Dole. So yes he has a effect here.

Hagan WAS at the Godless PAC event and accepted 2,000 dollars from them. So how is the Dole ad not factual again?

This may be a straw man to a reasonable person, but remember, 23% of Texans polled yesterday claim that Obama is a Muslim even after he said on Tv repeatedly that he is born-again. I would have thought that any Christian would be pleased to hear a person's confession of being born-again, but the slew of lie-emails and the wish to influence others by lies trumps truth. Dole doesnt care about the truth. She wanted to 'convince' thousands of voters to repeat the lie. Hagan's reply is excellent. Actually millions of North Carolinians are fed up with the failed policies of the GOP.

Bush's cabinet failed to provide re-training and Bush himself cannot address the economic woes of Carolina because he 'believes in' the ideology of letting the market self-adjust. Not identifying the voice of Ellen Johnson at the end of the ad is media manipulation plain and simple. But that's what LAWYERS get paid to do, making something seem other than it really is.

Come on, this is one of the most ignorant statements I have heard in a response to this article. Let's face it, we are not living in Iran under a Caliphat or under any religious law or government. There is a good reason why Thomas Jefferson pushed hard for a separation of church and state. It's to keep people like you from trying to influence and control the government with religious BS. You are free to have your own religion in this country, isn't that good enough. Why do you have to push it on all of us. What if you are not Cristian and have some other religion, Buddhist, Jewish, Islam, or low and behold you worship Roman Gods. Now are you a Pagan and really bad now! Who are you to judge somebody, especially during an election to our government on their thoughts and morality. It has no place in our government, that was set up this way on purpose to keep people like you, from trying to control our country.

I will try to break this down as clearly as possible, since I know basic reading might be hard, even beyond, most of the liberal BLUENC readers of this blog.

Example 1:
"She even faked my voice in her TV ad to make you think I don't believe in God." - Hagan during her recent rebuttal ad.

This is called pandering to the uneducated masses, quite simply.

The Dole Campaign acknowledged, the day of the ad, that the voice at the end was that of Ellen Johnson, the executive director of the Godless American PAC.

If I were a member of the Dole campaign, I would file a "cease and desist order" against Hagan campaign for defamation and, religiously speaking, bearing false witness against thy neighbor.

Example 2: The DSCC, MoveOn.org, and various other outside ultra-liberal groups have spent over $18 million attacking Dole for being in the pockets of Big Oil and Wall Street. It is my instinct that most of the money that Hagan's campaign labels as Big Oil and Wall Street money is from employees of these respected companies, as I know FEC policy does not allow corporations to give money. The point is...the Hagan campaign NEVER objected to any of these ads pointed at showing where Dole gets her money. Now here comes the contradiction...(just making sure you liberals can follow this simple logic)...when the Dole campaign merely points out where Kay Hagan is getting her money(which so happens to be GODLESS AMERICAN PAC among others), then she cries foul. I am sorry Kay...what is fair for one group is fair for the other...

Example 3:
Hagan stated that she did not know who the Godless American PAC was or what they stood for before she attended the fundraiser. It is well documented that the Dole campaign exposed this facet for Hagan three weeks prior to the campaign in a press release.

Not only that...It is also well documented that Hagan's campaign went to great lengths to scrub the liberal blogs, event sites, and her own public campaign calendar to hide the fact that she was going to attend this event.

Kay Hagan is demonstrating characteristics of dishonesty, deception and poor moral judgment. She is not equipped to represent the PTA of my children's kindergarten, given her recent actions. I am truly disappointed in this most hideous display of deception and for all you liberals that buy into this pettiness and can not see the ad for what it truly is...I hope to God, my Lord and Savior, that McCain, Dole, and McCrory sweep the Old North State come November 4, 2008.

As I said numerous times...I welcome all rebuttals, because I use logic over emotion and facts over sensation...so let's play...

I am going to start a site to spite you liberals called "Hagan the Pagan" if she wins this race...and it will show you why she has no reason to be in the race or in the US Senate.

I'm an atheist and a resident of the Outer Banks. Of course, I'm having a tough time trying to figure out why Elizabeth Dole thinks that's a bad thing. So, I called her office today to ask. A staffer told me that it's Kay Hagan who thinks it's awful to be an atheist and that I should call her. The staffer ended the conversation by saying "god bless you," knowing that it would be an insult to my religious beliefs.

I certainly hope that Tarheels vote out Elizabeth Dole and her disrespectful staff.

In my case, Dole's anti-atheist ad backfired. I just voted for Kay Hagan.

H.R. 5683 is legislation to acquire a giant Christian Cross on public land in California. It is objectable to those of us who are not Christians for our government to use its funds to discriminate against those of us who do not want our money going to fund the Christian religion or acquire huge religious idols in order to force all of us to worship that religion.

This is from their PAC's website. They use "stop discrimination" as a cover for "remove God from public view" and you should realize that.

Hey, if they build the Christian Cross out of a tree, they and their Druid buddies can worship it, too. A multi-purpose symbol.

Liddy Dole is a wack job!

It's not that I would vote against Dole on the basis of the fact that her face is pudgy and looks like it has endured as much stretching as it can take, but I think it is worth noting that she is using that mouth of hers to lie.

Kay "Hag?" Are you kidding? You seen pictures of Dole lately and you're using the word "hag" to describe Kay Hagan? Lordy, the Dole campaign really IS desperate, aren't ya?

Horse hockey. The purpose of the group is not to eliminate God from public view. The purpose is to fight the discrimination that still exists in this society toward those who do not join the religious mainstream. This is a laudable purpose.

Hagan doesn't lack backbone for refusing to say what you want to hear. She has stood up straight and tall, delivered a beautiful response, has conducted a wonderful campaign, and deserves the votes of thoughtful citizens.

What's pathetic and lacking in backbone is that Dole's campaign would put out such an egregiously misleading ad. Even members of her own party are expressing their disgust.

A demoncrat who is on a Godless committee: well, the two concepts are mutually exclusive, anyway. Kay Hag is not needed in Congress: we need balance so everybody's views can be represented, not just those of the social agenda. Some people have to work for a living, and they don't feel like supporting the unmotivated.
The whole concept of being "godless" is low on most North Carolinians agenda, anyway. Being "jobless" is more of a worry.

Have some backbone. She claims she's a Christian and I believe her. But, the main purpose of this group appears to be to remove God from public view. If she agrees with this mission, then she shouldn't have any qualms about taking their money and not hiding that fact. But, if she doesn't agree with their mission, then she should have the fortitude to say "no thanks" to taking their money.

Sounds to like Dole is trying not to say I am ready to get out of this job and this is my way of doing so.

I think if that is the case, she just might succeed in firing herself. I for one know she helped me make up my mind who to vote for (it ain't her).

Gosh, jnellisnc, what's objectionable? That some people don't believe in God? Gosh, I hope that folks still have the right to believe what they wish. I certainly have no objection to it. At this point, the NC Senate race should not even be close. Can for once, as a state, agree that the days of Helms style politics are over? Even former Helms people are saying this went too far. When a politician is devoid of accomplishments and ideas, and does nothing for the state, then in desperation they will resort to this sort of nonsense. That's too bad. How can the ad be 'truthful'? It's filled with a lies and deception. This is what it says at the end:

"What did Hagen promise in return? - there is no God"

Hagen never promise that. In fact, the voice belonged to another woman. Sen Dole's campaign has no honor left.

This isn't a matter for lawyers. It's a matter among us human beings. Anybody with any responsibility for this is the lowest form of political, moral and ethical slime, not to mention incredibly stupid to think this would be anything other than overwhelmingly negative to their candidate. God there must be something in the Republican water this month.

Dole is DESPERATE, repeat DESPERATE! As the incumbent she shouldn't be trailing at this point if she was going to win. She should also be over 50% of the vote. Both indicators-nearly always accurate predictors of a final outcome have her losing. She's reaching desperately for a game changer and this isn't it. Does the campaign REALLY think the people of North Carolina are that stupid? I guess they do.

Her campaign has been mismanaged from the beginning and she's an awful absentee candidate and senator. Bye bye Liddy. At least you can join Bob as a lobbyist now in DC.

Dole has absolutely no morals. Next Tuesday she will be kicked out anyway.

Kansas is pleased to have 3 Senators while N.C. only has 1 Senator. What a big disappointment Dole has been for N.C. She is hardly ever in our state. She hasn't lived here in decades and knows little about us. Worse still, she has been incompetent. Based on her performance alone, she needs to be downzsized.

This ad is significant because it shows how despicable Dole's campaign has become, and how Elizabeth Dole herself approves of telling a pretty nasty and obvious lie in order to win election. Conservatives are denouncing it -- it's being roundly condemned by newspapers and blogs all across the state, and it's caught fire on YouTube, where folks all over the country will read it and shake their heads and say, "Dang but North Carolinians are backward!"

Way to go, Dole. You've disgraced yourself. And her lawyers say it is TRUTHFUL? Didn't they mean to say, as Colbert would, that it had "truthiness" instead?

I saw this horrible ad on tv yesterday and could not believe they had the gall to broadcast it. It is NOT obvious that the last statement is being made by someone other than Kay Hagan. I have no idea what Kay Hagan sounds like so how is it obvious? That is the most hateful part of the ad. This truly reflects extremely poorly on Elizabeth Dole and I hope she is embarrassed by it.

Everson v. Board of Education established that "neither a state nor the Federal Government can pass laws which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion over another". Let this go. We have more important issues to worry about. Can you say "straw man"?
