Dole 47, Hagan 39

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole has gained on her rival.

According to a recent poll by Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, Dole had 47 percent and Democratic nominee Kay Hagan had 39 percent.

That's an improvement of five percentage points since the firm's last poll. That could be because Dole recently spent $500,00 airing a TV ad (see a fact-check here) touting her bona fides on illegal immigration and held a roundtable on the issue.

The automated survey of 543 likely voters was conducted May 28-29. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.

Update: Dole's ad began airing on Wednesday of last week, so we may have overstated its effect on the poll.
