The Progressive Democrats of North Carolina played 20 questions with the candidates.
During its annual meeting in December of 2007, the group asked questions of three candidates for lieutenant governor in the Democratic primary: Canton Mayor Pat Smathers, attorney Hampton Dellinger and Winston-Salem City Councilman Dan Besse.
The questions included their thoughts on affirmative action, capital punishment, collective bargaining and gay marriage.
After reviewing the answers, the group endorsed Besse, but it said it could support either Smathers or Dellinger if they win the primary.
State Sen. Walter Dalton did not attend the meeting.
