Gov. Mike Easley's proposed 2008-09 budget is $21.5 billion.

It includes a 4.2 percent increase in spending, funded in part by an increase in the beer tax of 4 cents per can, an increase in the wine tax of 4 cents per liter, an increase in the liquor tax of 4 percent.

The budget would also increase the tax on cigarettes from 35 to 55 cents per pack.

Presented on May 12, it was Easley's final budget as governor. He is barred from seeking a third term.

Re: 2008 Budget

As a State employee this is a slap in the face and an insult to all employees when we get 1.5% increase. Gov. Easly should have at least given us 4% increase considering the gas and food prices going thru the roof plus increase in our health plan for next year. Shame on you Easly. He gave us a one week paid vacation, you know what ALL state employees should do?? We should all call in sick the same week and let him see if our jobs are as important as these teachers.

Disappointed.
