Crowd gets heated after McCain rally

A John McCain event in Wilmington turned out to be a rally, not a town hall.

Although the Republican presidential candidate talked about "taking questions" during his speech at Cape Fear Community College, he left without talking to the audience.

Still, McCain did not leave right away. He went to the back of the auditorium where he was reportedly being interviewed by two of the national networks.

The traveling press and McCain supporters waited about 45 minutes outside the auditorium.

The sun wasn't the only thing heated outside. About a dozen Barack Obama supporters on the other side of Front Street got into a brief shouting match with McCain supporters on the grass. Shouts of "Nobama" were matched by "Yes We Can."

One woman yelled out "Idiots for Obama!"

Later, a young man wandered into the McCain crowd and started shouting "McCain supports murder!" drawing the ire of supporters, who shouted back "Free speech for freaks!"

After a few minutes, the confrontation dispersed without incident.
